Rate the Last Movie You've Seen #14

I was going to see a movie with my sister yesterday, but we didn't end up going.

The last movie I watched was Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008) (no spoilers).

I watched it mainly because of Anthony Head (he sings. A. Lot.). My friend recommended it to me and I was very pleased. It has a lot of different music styles, from actual opera to rock and metal, even some softer songs. The movie is written well, and it's completely sung, no spoken dialogue (which I was worried about, but turned out to be awesome) and was adapted from an actual stage musical. It's a bit gory at times, but I grew up on old zombie and slasher flicks, so it's nothing too horrible. The acting is very good, especially from Anthony Head. I haven't seen a lot of his other stuff, but he really brought his character to life. It has a very Gothic horror feel to it without the "try too hard" aftertaste. I'd recommend it if you like Anthony Head and are any sort of music and/or horror fan. (I'm not good at rating, but I'd give it an 9/10).

The girl from Spy Kids is in it and she's very good as well.
There may also be a Joan Jett cameo.

I had to watch this with my roommate who loves it and I was like it's Giles! And he was like who? I know Blaze also love this, but it didn't do it for me, ASH is great in it and the chick is hot but i dont like the songs and the Gothic operatic horror tone. It also has Paris Hilton.

Zombeavers - 3.5 out of 5
It's a fun satirical look at 'cabin in the woods' and 'monster' movies. The black comedy riffs on a few genres and it changes tempo and atmosphere a few times during the course of the movie. It features the first ever beavercam (even an underwater beavercam) as well as a real life 'whack a mole' scene, and there are plenty of scantly clad women investigating big furry angry beavers. There really are some moments where you just go, huh, how about that. It has an 80's Creepshow feel to it. In short, it's a whole lotta awesome. Be sure to stay for the end credits when you can see the sequel teased.

The New Girlfriend (2014) 7/10

The latest from Francois Ozon is a twisted melodrama based loosely on a short story by Ruth Rendell. It concerns the fall out of the death of a man's wife and how he has to raise their child, but more importantly about his dark secret which is discovered by his wive's best friend who maybe a bit nervous at first but after awhile decides to help and slowly a complex relationship builds. Romain Duris has great fun playing with his play boy image, and Anais Demoustier gives a very subtle and powerful performance as Claire. The plot is a bit hit and miss. There are some nice twists along the way, and some moving and disturbing scenes, but also it drags a bit in the middle, and at times the characters feel a bit too empty. Some of the stuff on sexuality was a bit heavy handed, but mostly a solid watch.

Tristana (1970) 10/10

Luis Bunuel's final film to be filmed in his native Spain. The richness of the colours and denseness of location makes for a disturbing and vivid portrait of entrapment, sexual politics, and class among other themes. The use of sound is very organic and adds a sense of dread to the film, the discontunity editing is sharp and nicely weaved into the narrative. Catherine Deneuve manages to balance both extremes of youthful vulenability, but also vengeful womanhood. Fernando Ray is fittingly sinister as the aging doctor.

Fun trashy cult b-movie, with some knowing performances, a great visual style, killer music, and some inventive stunts and set pieces. The sequel maybe even better if not as scary.

Jurassic Park III - 5.5/10
What I like about this movie is that it doesn't hide that it's plot is basically non-existent. People get stranded on an island and chased by dinosaurs. In the first film, it takes a full hour until we get to see the Tyrannosaurus, and one hour and 45 minutes for the raptors, which I think is brilliant. The build-up makes the final reveal even better. In JP3, you've seen the raptors and a dinosaur fight within the first 25 minutes of the film. Unlike the first Jurassic Park, this isn't a good movie, but I still remember buying the VHS and watching it for the first time, and I still get kind of nostalgic about it. I had the toys and everything. It's a very flawed film, but, due to the short runtime, it at least isn't boring.

Mad Max: Fury Road - 9/10
Just watched it again with my brother, who loved it as well, and I thought it was actually even better than the first time.

I agree. It was better the second time around. And honestly, the third time was pretty good too. It's a deeper movie than some people are giving it credit for.

Jurassic Park III - 5.5/10
Unlike the first Jurassic Park, this isn't a good movie...It's a very flawed film

I'm sorry. That must suck. I know how much you were looking forward to it.. you almost made me excited about it and I thought it would not be worth getting excited over.

Big Trouble in Little China-7/10
I've always heard this was a good fun movie to watch and it was. It's ridiculous and super funny. Kurt Russell is great, a young Kim Catrell was interesting to see. But I was laughing the whole time and thought it was well paced and entertaining.

Big Trouble in Little China-7/10

Great choices! Its been awhile since I've watched Fargo so need to go back and watch it, but you are right there is something oddly comical to it in places.

BTILC is just a great old school pop corn film the kind you sadly don't get anymore. It is super fun!

The Skeleton Twins 7/10

Pretty depressing for the most part, but I'm okay with that. I watched it entirely due to Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader (nice surprise to see Modern Family's Ty Burrell too) and overall I'm glad I did. Well acted.
Also, I'd give it 10/10 for the use of Starship's "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now", that scene made me smile far too much and I can't get the damn song out of my head. Helped break up the somber.

Fargo is brilliant!!! The Coen Brothers are basically geniuses!

It is definitely intended to be a black comedy!

Visually it's really awesome, the soundtrack is great, but I think they should have taken themselves a little more seriously. Sounds weird, I know, but I think that would have made it funnier. Nonetheless, definitely worth watching if you - like me - are into cheesy 80s action films.

I completely agree. If.... they.... really.... Shatner'ed it up it could have been epic. That's what made The Room so good- the acting.

Clueless (1995) 8/10

Always a fun watch not least on a Sunday afternoon😉 Packed full of sharp wit and smart jokes at the expense of the MTV generation, it also has some touching moments which make the characters just likable enough to keep you interesting. The soundtrack is cool, and the cast brilliantly selected. Its still one of most fun and subverisve teen films ever made.

Shutter Island (2010) 7.5/10

At times mostly during the first half Scorsese's tribute to b-movie thrillers was in danger of over doing it with the style and knowing genre nods, but the pacing is good, an as things progress there are some good twists and nice supporting parts such as Patrica Clarkson's small role near the end which steal the film from Leo who still does a solid job in the lead role. There is plenty of money thrown at the screen and most of it was money well spent.

I really love this movie! I think it's an under rated/appreciated animated movie. It's fun and funny, and has a clever plot. Good character voice overs, some of the songs are fun. It even has a few small parodies of other movies sprinkled throughout. It's not too kiddy, adults can enjoy it too.

Suspect Zero...
One of those odd movies that I couldn't even bother to finish. It was my type of movie and everything, and I was impressed that the cast featured both Ben Kingsely and Carrie-Ann Moss, both actors I like (less impressed by Aaron Eckhart... I feel like his whole 'acting' thing is switching up the same three expressions on a loop... highly overrated dude.)

It had kind of a gritty cool feel to it but already from the start there was just something... lacking. As I'm not a fan I blame it a little on Eckhart, his performance is just not enough to resonate anything, beyond that the plotline between him and Moss was (not through his fault) hamhanded and awkward and the constant foreshadowing (clips) of things to come quickly grew very, very annoying.

In the end it's a movie about a somewhat disgraced FBI agent on an assignment that consumes him. Unfortunately there's nothing about the movie or plotline that consumes you, the viewer, so this one fell flat into a 1/10 grade for me.

Parallels 8/10

Really good sci-fi! The only thing is that it feels more like the pilot of a show, they open many questions, but the ending is SUPER open. And by that I mean they literally add more mysteries all the way up to the very final scene. Still, the movie was very good, not sure if at some point there was suppose to be a fallow up, but I would surely watch more of it if it ever came out. The premise is pretty cool and well executed. They lost a few point though because at times the acting is pretty bad. Still, worth a watch.

Edit: apparently this was a pilot of a show that did not get picked up. Now I'm a bit sad, this would have been good!

X-Men: DoFP 9/10

Watched this again last night. (saw it in theatre when it came out). Still my fav X-Men movie. The mash up of all the old and new cast was great. Sad that some of the old cast were a bit left to the side though, but it makes sense since they're trying to slowly move on to the new cast. Still mad Kitty wasn't the one time travelling. Would have been nice for once if Wolverine wasn't the protagonist.

Mad Max: Fury Road 8/10
I had my doubts seeing this movie. I'm not a big fan of 'car' movies. It thankfully wasn't what I was expecting. The outfits and make up were amazing. You can tell they used very little CGI. The acting was also very good. I am a fan of Tom Hardy. Honestly...he didn't really speak that much. Which it is funny. The story line was a little hard to follow because they explained everything very quickly with narration and little dialogue.
