John Wick - 7/10
Cool, kind of old-school action flick with a straightforward story. It had a kind of Guy Ritchie-ish style to it and there were some cool little details and and quite memorable supporting characters, which is in my opinion what sets this film apart form most action films.
Blade Runner - 9/10
Without a doubt one of the best science fiction films ever made.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - 6.5/10
I prefer this film to Age of Ultron, which is weird, because I think Captain America is the most boring Avenger. But this film is not really your typical superhero movie. The structure might be similar to the other MCU movies (with the big battle at the end etc.) but it's more of a sci-fi spy movie, and the plot doesn't seem to be as messy as Age of Ultron's. And Robert Redford is awesome.
The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - 5/10
The Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - 5/10
I watched them pretty much back to back. I know the first one pretty well and I quite like it, but, although I had seen 2 and 3 before, I couldn't really remember anything. Now I know why. These two films are a mess, in my eyes.
They're way too long and overly complicated. There is so much outwitting and outsmarting and cheating going on, and there are too many characters, so that you completely forget what everybody's motivations are in the fist place. Another problem I'm having is that the first of these two films is called "Dead Man's Chest", but yet that storyline of Davy Jones and the chest doesn't even conclude in this film but gets dragged on into the next movie. Sometimes it also seems like the writers simply made up new parts of the mythology as they went along to get out of a corner they'd written themselves into.
I know that I'm nit-picking now, but I also don't like the CGI fish pirates from the Flying Dutchman. I think they would have been more scary if they'd been actors in makeup, like Stellan Skarsgard's character, and not complete sea creatures. One thing I did like, however, was the conclusion of the love story between Elizabeth and Will, which is why I don't understand why fans seemed to be so outraged that they didn't appear in the fourth movie (which I have not watched yet). Their story is told. Let them be. But then I hear Orlando Bloom will be in the fifth one, so... yeah.
Anyway, at least I can't say that I do not regret watching them. They're mostly entertaining and fun for what they are.
Dial M For Murder - 8.5/10
I consider this to be one of Hitchcock's best. What seems to be a perfect crime turns out to be riddled with flaws.
Prisoners - 8.5/10
Great script and absolutely incredible performances by Jackman and Gyllenhaal, with a
great atmospheric score by Jóhann Jóhannsson. One of my favorite films of 2013.
