Men In Black: International 7/10
Same old "Men In Black" story line, but without the interaction of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson work well together, but they're no Smith & Jones. I'm sure the hammer gag would have worked better if it hadn't already been shown in a trailer on Youtube. It seems strange now not to see Chris not as pumped up as heis as Thor (except in "Endgame," of coure) Entertaining, but nothing really fantastic. I would go and see the almost inevitable sequel, but probably not the first weekend it plays.

Crazy Rich Asians 7/10
Entertaining with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments courtesy of Awkwafina, whose character was a standout in the film. Not quite worth the hype it generated, but a solid rom-com with some genuinely sweet moments and some gorgeous scenery and costume porn.

Godzilla: King of the monsters (2019)

The monsters were entertaining and it had interesting ideas but the characters were kind of bad and I couldn’t understand their motivations (apart from the father).
Still I’m excited to see King Kong beat Godzilla in 2020.

John Wick - 7.5/10
So, my boyfriend and I decided to rewatch John Wick so that we can see Chapter 3: Parabellum, maybe next week. I've seen this a couple of times before, but noticed a lot more details on this viewing. It's a solid movie, good action scenes, even a decent plot. After watching the last season of Game of Thrones it was fun seeing a younger Theon in it.

The villain wasn't as good as the first, but it's still a good movie. I hear the 3rd is the best, so looking forward to that, so far this is a solid action franchise.

Red Dawn (2012) 8/10
This is a remake of the 1984 Patrick Swayze movie about World War 3 and the occupation of the U S by Russians, though in this version, the enemy is a Korea/China coalition. Interestingly, the star of the remake was Chris Hemsworth and the group of high school partisans that he led called themselves the Wolverines. I guess the guy just can't get away from the MCU.

The Usual Suspects (1995) 9/10
Complicated but great film. Gets better with each watch. Very clever and even funny at times in a twisted sort of way. I still don’t know for sure what actually happened in the flashbacks.

I'm slowly making my way through all of Luis Buñuel movies. I recently also saw The Exterminating Angel by him which i think was the inspiration for the Buffy episode 6x14 "Older and Far Away"

They already killed off Jean Grey in a older movie a number of years back: and the fans were not happy with that. So what did they do, bring Jean Grey back and kill her off a second time. If the fans are not happy the first time, it is very clear they will not be happy a second time.

Days of Future Past retconned Jean's death by creating an alternate timeline and Apocalypse followed this new timeline but then Dark Phoenix went and completely ignored it.

A group of teenagers go off into the Outback for a week long camping trip and come home to discover that, while they were gone, enemy troops from an unnamed country had invaded and taken control of their country. Of course, what can a bunch of kids do but become a band of super efficient partisan fighters? Decent movie, but, as I said, if you've seen either version of "Red Dawn," you pretty well know what's gonna happen.

Oh, I love Tomorrow When The War Began. It's based off the first book of an Australian YA series from the early 90s. There were plans to make the next book into a film too but that fell apart when the first film didn't perform as well as expected.

I was just going to recc this for you! I am glad you have seen it and rated it so highly. I adore the book series and was so sad they didnt continue with the movies. I dont know if it would work in todays world.
Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile 6.5/10
An interesting look at Ted Bundy through the eyes of his girlfriend, played by Lilly Collins. It portrayed her POV very well, didn't exploit the victims or sensationalize the crimes and Zac Efron was actually really good (and convincingly creepy) as Bundy but the film felt a bit flat in places and it wasn't as in-depth as it could have been.

In the Mood for Love 8.5/10
It’s an emotive movie about love and betrayal. Two people become closer when they live next to each other and realize that their partners are having an extra-marital affair. It shows them falling in love and longing to love and to be loved, but never crossing the line -- even though they know about the affair of their spouses. I give it 8.5/10 because it’s a bit slow, you have to be “in the mood” for a slow-moving film to watch this movie. But I totally recommend it (although, I didn't like the ending, but I won't spoil it for you 😉), synopsis below.

It’s a truly corny movie but I’m a real sucker for this classic that became a cult movie. Besides, the movie is worth watching only for the Patrick Swayze’s last dance scene, he’s so sexy… I’m drooling.

@Octavia it's a classic!! It's impossible not knowing the song and it's impossible not wanting to dance! I'm a total klutz, but every time I watch it, I DO wish that I could dance 😕... maybe a vengeance... sorry a justice demon can grant me my wish 😉. Jeez, I can watch this video in a loop forever and I don't tired.

I ended up watching it haha just til the lift. Dancing is fun even if you cant do it. It just doesn't look as sexy as his bum does.

Thanks for sharing the article! I agree! I’ve been combining my Asian films re-watch with these classics (Dirty Dancing, Ghostbusters I and II, Ghost, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Romancing the Stone, etc.).
I truly love the 80’s and early 90’s movies. I was too young to watch them when they came out, but I watched them later on during my childhood and adolescence (they kept airing them in my country). For me, they are like a security blanket and I have to be honest, I keep coming to them not for the moral message but for how simple and clean they feel most of the time. The article, however, makes very good points, these are probably things that seem obvious, but I couldn’t manage to express why I like these movies so much, now I understand better.
Keep sharing this kind of stuff! Films and photography are two things that I’m fascinated with. I'm going to get the book from my local library, it sounds like a very interesting reading. Thanks again!

Yeah I have nostalgia for films from those decades too. I think out of the two decades 80s films have edged better.
