Rate the Last Movie You've Seen #30

"Anna" 8/10

Let's see now...a beautiful Russian lady trained to be a master assassin, expert with weapons and martial arts. Where have we heard that one before? Okay, she ain't Natasha Romanov, her hair is blonds, and she doesn't wear skin tight black leather cat suits. Other than that, she could be straight out of the MCU by way of an R rating that makes "Deadpool" look tame. I kept looking for a guy with a bow and quiver of arrows to recruit her for S H I E L D.High grades for action, great fight choreography, but that's just about all that it's got going for it.

The Devil Wears Prada (2006) 9/10
Brilliant film. Realistic but clever and funny at the same time. I was surprised to find myself enjoying it, as I know little about fashion. Wasn’t familiar with Anne Hathaway or Meryl Streep, but thought they were fantastic actors, though the others were great too.

Quite a early Emily Blunt role too. Remember at the time people saying she was one to watch.

Point Break - 5/10
Finally checked this out for the first time with my mom who had seen it long ago. I had heard that The Fast and The Furious was basically a rip off of Point Break, and after seeing both of them recently, yea it kind of is. There were literally a few beats that were exactly the same in both movies! And having seen the first two John Wick movies recently, Keanu Reeves has come a long way as an actor. He was cute in Point Break, but could not act. I was surprised to see a young Lori Petty in this playing the love interest, looking a bit like Courtney Cox. I only knew Lori Petty from her crazy character on Orange is the New Black. Patrick Swayze was great in this, Gary Busey was, well Gary Busey. Other than that it's an ok movie for me, probably won't watch it again unless it's on and someone wants to watch it. Great ending though!

Oh I love Point Break. I think its a real edge of your seat film with some fun character interactions. I do actually Keanu is well cast since he's playing a zen surfer dude who has a man crush on the Swayze character.
Late Night (2019) 6.5/10
Solid comedy which is carried by Mindy Karling and Emma Thompson. The jokes are hit and miss, but I warmed to the characters, the satire and feminist theme.
 
Aladdin: 9/10

Wonderful fun, Will Smith steals the show as the Genie and manages to walk the line between creating his own version and honouring Robin Williams legendary turn expertly.

Toy Story 4: 8/10

Unbelievable animation, beautiful poignant storytelling, but for me 3 and 4 are so much less fun that 1 and 2 because they deal with such sad themes. I felt sad from the very first scene in Toy Story 4 and the lump in my throat barely subsided for the whole movie. I can’t give it a lower mark because it’s a wonderfully made and very emotionally affecting story.
 
Jurassic Park: 10/10
Not going to lie, this is about the 9th time I've watched it in 3 years but it is one of my favourite movies. It is the only dinosaur themed movie that I can enjoy without the big inaccuracies annoying me. I could watch it over and over again 300 times and I would still love it.

Toy Story 4: 7/10

So the 7 is for the comedy (best of the series) and for the characters and a handful of scenes that are clever and emotional.

But... the message and the ending is weird and unlike in the other 3 movies they didn’t translate human experiences onto toys so cleverly. I felt there was a disconnect.
Still, everyone should see this movie 🙂

Still need to see it. But 7 sounds about right. I'm guessing its good but falls short of the others.
John Wick: Chapter 3-Parabellum - 7/10
So I've enjoyed the John Wick movies, and was looking forward to seeing this movie. I had a great movie experience with this. The first 15 minutes or so, was non-stop action. And the action was great, very visceral but they was soo much action that I got tired of it sometimes. While these movies can be fun, don't think about the plot or the assassin organization. The whole organization is starting to get convoluted. Too many off shoots and rules and none of it explained. That said, if you don't think about it, this is a enjoyable movie, that is just another chapter cause it clearly sets up part 4.

Avengers:Endgame

That was a long one, and it was predictable in places too, I didn't see the need for the whole look at all us females here moment. I did enjoy Nebula though, it was good to see how far she came.

I hope they don't do another big Avengers movie though, The Avengers are over now, no more Captain America movies, no more Thor or Iron Man movies. I can't say there's a character in the new bunch that I'm really interested to see a movie of, although Thor and the Guardians would be a fun one to see.

Bucky looked really quite small in this one, I hope we see him again but not in a movie with Sam, I think Bucky would be better in the next Black Panther movie he has more of a connection with them.

Rocketman (2019) - 9/10
That was a great ride. Sooo much better than Bohemian Rhapsody. I was worried, going into it, and worried when we met John Reid, thanks to the aforementioned frick up of a film but as soon as it ended and I saw Elton John's name, I knew it was not only (mostly) factual, but the decision to do it musical-style instead of regular music biopic was brilliant. The visuals, dude, the visuals! I loved it, and my mother (the Elton expert) did as well, and that's good enough for me 😀
 
Spiderman: Far From Home 9/10

Okay, here it is, the last hoorah of the MCU as we have come to know and love it. Barring some sort of comic book reality element, where no one ever actually dies and stays dead, the Avengers, as we know them, are no more, and what the near future promises doesn't seem all that encouraging to me.

Chris Hemsworth is expected to play a part in "Guardians 3," which may spin off into a new trilogy. Unlike Downey (whose fee per movie has grown prohibitive over the years) and Evans, who wants to pursue a Directing career, he seems more than happy to continue playing Thor well into the future.
 
Toy Story 4

Didn't love it as much as the others, did seem to go around in circles a bit, but Buzz's inner voice, and Gabby not being the creepy villain you expect her to be was great. Forky was a good comedy addition, but it was quite a sad film, although those dolls/puppets were creepy!
 
"Blade 1 &2" 7/10 & 6/10 respectively

In a bout with insomnia last night, I pulled these two up on my laptop. Still pretty good stories, if rather simplistic, and the concept of the Daywalker is at least as unique as the Slayer. I like the fact that Blade uses modern weapons instead of the museum pieces that Buffy was stuck with (too bad silver apparently won't work on vampires in the Buffyverse) The fight scenes are very good. Snipes is a legitimate martial artist, and it shows. Like Sarah with Buffy, I think that he found his role of a lifetime here. Too bad he had to stop at just three movies (derned ol' taxes!) but he at least got his trilogy, which seems to be the norm with just about every movie series these days.

Incidentally, I never read the comics, and had no idea that Blade was actually the first successful Marvel franchise to hit the silver screen. Maybe, with the introduction of Dr Strange and the supernatural world into the MCU, there could be a place for him there as well.

I thought Blade 1 was alright (I haven't seen the second one) but I saw the ninja vampires and I kind of just turned off to it. I didn't finish the whole thing. I'll try to watch the whole thing at some point.
Match Point (2005) 10/10

It's one of my favorite Woody Allen's movies. The film explores moral choices through each one of the characters. Selfishness and lust guide the plot and the development of the protagonists. Synopsis below, I totally recommend it.

Tennis instructor Chris Wilton grows friendly with Tom Hewett, a wealthy student who shares an interest in opera. Invited to attend a performance with Tom, Chris meets the family and instantly attracts Tom's sister, Chloe. Chris marries her to get a job with her millionaire father, Alec, but a dangerous affair with Nola Rice, Tom's American girlfriend, threatens his newfound social status.

It's good movie. Scarlett Johansson was the "it" girl back then.
The Public - written & directed by Emelio Estevez. Pretty good, but ending was a little abrupt. Great cast.
 
Spider-Man Far From Home (2019) 7.5/10
Another enjoyable Spiderman film. The teen drama again works very well. The European locations added a different feel. The cast were again very good with Zendaya a charming MJ. Some good action also. I did think the big finale in London dragged the film down a bit. There's a couple of sloppy plot moments too. Overall I like Homecoming a bit more, but this was a good sequel.
 
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014) 6/10
Decent TMNT film. It has some cringeworthy moments and overly long action scenes, but they’re not that bad if you don’t take the film too seriously. Megan Fox was OK as April and a likable lead imo, though nowhere near as good as Judith Hoag and Paige Turco were in the 90s live-action films. Could’ve been better if didn’t have a troubled production. Better than Secret of the Ooze anyway.
