Rate the Last Movie You've Seen # 32

Parasite - 7/10

There's a lot going on here. Difficult to put it into a genre as it skips around between a few. It gives you plenty to think about and I'd say it's worth a watch. Can definitely see some people loving it. I'm not used to subtitles outside of Bruce Lee films which did take me out of it with regards to the characters and actors. Can't be helped.

Everything I was pleasantly surprised Little Women wasn't. A run time of approximately 7 hours and nothing happens.
 
Call Of The Wild 9.5/10

Okay, I'm biased. I love Harrison Ford, I absolutely adore dogs, and good CGI always impresses me. Combine all three, and I'm a happy man.

This is the third interpretation of Jack London's novel brought to the big screen that I am aware of, the first starring Clark Gable, the second, Charlton Heston, and now, Harrison Ford as the lead character, all with slightly different endings, so it can't be said that if you've seen one, you've seen 'em all. I've read several reviews of the movie complaining that Buck is computer generated, rather than a real dog, and I can, of course, see their point, but CGI allows the film makers to tell the dog's story from the dog's point of view, more effectively than simple narration and trained dogs ever could, so I'm fine with it. This is a movie well worth the cost of admission and concession stand snacks. You can't get much better than that without resurrecting John Wayne.

My son had to watch Terence Davies' House of Mirth at Uni - he swears it lasted at least 12 hours. He still gags then falls asleep when it's mentioned. I loved Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder so I really want to see Parasite. I think it deserves an extra point because Trump hated it. 😉
 
Raiders of the Lost Ark 10/10

A favourite of my childhood. On a filmmaking level it is pretty close to perfect at telling a story visually. You do notice the casual racism more as an adult, and I had to laugh all the way through as the body count got higher and higher while it's rated PG ie for kids. Even Marion gets a few kills in. It's a shame you can't buy this movie on Blu-ray without buying the collection cos I think the rest are trash.
 
Mission:Impossible - Fallout 9/10
The action was amazing, especially the chases through Paris and London. The story excellent, lots of surprises and heart too. The only issue I had was Sean Harris, who always looks like an Emmerdale reject to me, not at all scary and I don't know how he keeps getting cast as the bad guy. He's probably terrifying in real life 😂

Fred (2018) 9/10
Interesting documentary about Fred Foreman, a British gangster from the 60's. He justifies everything he did, and there's a theme of how the Blitz affected these gangsters as young kids, which you may or may not buy into. He's a really interesting character who talks well and spins a good yarn.

Brahms: The Boy 2 (2020) 4/10

I didn’t have high expectations going into this and was still quite disappointed especially with the ending. It was very slow overall and nothing much happened for the first 40 minutes. Most of the events in the previous film were ignored. I did enjoy seeing Katie Holmes on the screen but that was about it.

This was a massive hit at the time, but the sexual politics are a bit out of date now. Still a fun rom-com.
 
@Puppet & @Athene I knew I would get that response from some people on Gilbert Grape. I liked it when I first saw it years ago but it just doesn't hold now I think. Its so corny and over the top. Plus Depp is really bland in it.

If you don't already you should check out a horror podcast on youtube called Screams After Midnight. One of the hosts is obsessed with the Boy movies. Their review of the first film is one of the most entertaining things I've listened to!

(Re-watch) The Green Mile - 9/10

I love this film. Such a bittersweet story, heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time with stellar performances. Just beautiful movie, makes me cry every time!
 
Dog Soldiers 7/10

I said previously that I had given up on ever seeing a really good horror movie, and then I saw :A Quiet Place" and had to acknowledge that there were, in fact, a few good horror movies still being made. "Dog Soldiers" is another example of what good horror should be, and it only gets a 7, rather than an 8 out of 10 because they did slip back into the habit of relying on too much blood and guts to achieve their purpose/

A squad of soldiers engaged in a military simulated battle, armed to the teeth with rifles and blank ammunition, run into a pack of werewolves. Obviously, mayhem follows.

It's free on Amazon Prime, so if you have that, I recommend it for fans of the genre. I had never heard of either the movie or any of the actors, so it may not be available anywhere else.
 
Dunkirk (2017) - 8/10

Interesting film that works on a lot of levels. Not a touch on the Mills and Redgrave movies that were on tv when I was a kid, but pretty good. Churchill's speech is still incredibly powerful

I hesitated to go see this but this gives me hope! Maybe they still make movies for crusty old crones like me after all!

Not seen it yet but its a different take on Emma, which I think is what a new version should be otherwise what's the point? Pretty good cast too.

It's very tense and quite entertaining. Silly at times but worth a look.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (Ultimate Edition) - 7/10

I'm not sure why everyone hated this film so much (I mean, it has its flaws and whoever decided to cast Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor needs their head checked) but I genuinely enjoyed this film. Despite some cheesiness and a bit of schlocky dialogue, it's actually quite entertaining and I particularly like the characterisation of Bruce Wayne. Also, Lois Lane is a badass and I didn't realise how much screen time she gets in this film. She's amazing! I liked this film so much I'm planning to do a vid for my Youtube channel detailing why I think it worked on many levels.

(Re-watch) Candyman - 9/10

Because the trailer for the new one dropped last week, I had to re-watch the original. As good as I remember it, eerie, unsettling and with a great villain played by the amazing Tony Todd (THAT VOICE! How does he manage to be both sinister and seductive??). Love this film and looking forward to the new one.

About the painter L.S.Lowry and his mum. Not everyone's cup of tea but I really enjoyed it - possibly because I'd spent the day at the Lowry Centre on Salford Quay. Timothy Spall and Vanessa Redgrave played off each other so well!
