Reading Challenges

I really can’t say this enough, but if you haven’t read Devil in the White City, definitely take a look at it. Fascinating piece of historical nonfiction detailing the Worlds Fair and H.H. Holmes and the fascinating intersection between the two. It’s not really written like a stuffy history book either. The author utilizes this great journalistic style that makes everything feel so great to read and keeps you engaged.
I read Killers of the Flower Moon last year, and that was, pretty much the only non biography book I read for non fiction. So that does sound like it could be a similar type of read. I could read a few true crime type of books.

I do have plenty of cookbooks and gardening books, but I wasn't counting those as they're more reference ones.

Today I bought a small notebook called 100 books and I'm excited to start filling it up with reviews for books I read or re-read; obviously, I'm not expecting to fill it out in a year, but it's just a nice little push to get me to actually read more this year than in the past few years.

I like going to second-hand stores and buying super cheap books that have an interesting summary, saves me a lot of money (books are expensive these days!), so I'll have to up my collection so I can fill out that notebook. And, no, I don't read books on a computer or tablet, I just genuinely prefer physical copies.

I can't get into anything new, I feel like I need to read something I've read before, bit don't know what. Something short preferably, less than 250 pages.

I've read 10 books so far this year, so currently still on track for hitting 52 books.

I'm definitely not on track now, barely read anything in months, but I'll hopefully get back into it and maybe aim for 30 books instead.

Currently looking online for books to order, as my reading habits over the last few years have been utterly atrocious. Something im not very proud of to be honest.

Found a set that looks interesting, The Daevabad Trilogy by S. A. Chakraborty. At this rate, if I can get through those three books by the end of the year, it will be a small miracle.

I didn't see any new or interesting books in the charity shop close to me! Very small selection and mainly ones I already have.

Charity shops have a tendency for a lot of their stock to be best sellers that were bought reduced at the supermarket.

Up to 16 books finished now, so I'm slowly getting back into reading. I've definitely started way more than I finish, but I'm okay with not finishing books.

I'm currently in a bit of a Lionel Shriver binge, just the shorter books though. Not sure if I want something as big as The Mandibles no matter how good its supposed to be.

I've set my reading goal at 26 books for this year, but also joined an A to Z challenge. I don't expect to complete the A to Z one but it'll motivate me to read different books

Quite a few of the books I read are very short, like only a few thousand words (thanks to Kindle Unlimited), and it never seems to be right counting those in the same way as novels.

I crushed my 75 books goal for 2025 with 82! Part of that is because when I had holidays I would literally read nonstop. I mixed in old media tie-ins (like Buffy) with fantasy/mystery/thrillers. I read both on kindle and physical novels. I think I tend to read Kindle books faster.

This year for 2026 I reduced my goal to 50 simply because I’m doing dissertation research and I don’t want to overdo it. I can certainly do 5 a month still. And I’ll certainly read more on holidays.

My goal is to read the 31 books on my library holds list. That has gotten way out of control!
That's still my goal this year. I was on track, but my dad's eye surgery and then death altered my world. I did winnow down the list, and avoided adding too many new, but I'm not going to make any predictions for this year.

Keeping you in my thoughts! Never easy losing a parent. 🖤
I've joined two readalongs, one for A Tale of Two Cities which is a 6 month one, and a year long Count of Monte Cristo one.

How surprising!
Once again I read the thread title and understood it to mean something else entirely, as it was I cannot remember the last time I was able to read a book all the way through it, though it was probably The Way of the Wyrd The non fiction account of an Anglo-Saxon Sorcerer.
I thought the thread title was referring to my inability to read a book due to the fact my magnifying glass was wide enough for me to read the whole line without moving the magnifying glass. So please excuse me,
please continue with what you were doing,
so er . . . don't read this . . . umm . . . did I say that too late? . . . Sorry! Please imagine me smiling right now, ta!

Audible gave me a month free trial, so I've been making full use of it, downloading as many interesting looking free books as I can. Obviously I used the 1 credit they gave me too, but there's loads available for free but only if you have a subscription. I'll probably add more before it finishes

I've got 2 A to Z challenges this year, one is titles, and I'm just doing that as I read, the other is names, and that I'm attempting to do in order.

A is Anita and Me by Meera Syal

B is Bridget Jones's Diary by Helen Fielding

I am challenging myself to read at least 80% of the books I ordered in the last couple of months before I order anymore.

We shall see if I succeed…

I need to get finishing books, especially as I have more library reservations due in soon. However I keep starting new books instead.

So I'm going to return 2 books to the library that I've not started and focus on reading the ones I have started. At least until the next book comes in!
