News Rebooting "Buffy" without Joss is "Ridiculous" -Marti Noxon

Dan: I'm confident we see each others points even if we don't see things the same way.

I hope you didn't take the "selfish" comment the wrong way. I didn't mean it in an offensive way but I guess it could have sounded that way. I'm sure been down that road myself and still am in many ways. I'm trying to change though. You can miss out on so many good things otherwise. It wasn't easy when my favourite band got a new singer. But guess what? It didn't sound the same but I still liked it even if I still prefer the old singer. 😉

No i agree with the selfish comment, so no problem there mate. :biggrin3:

Lets not talk about the movie, that's what most people decide anyway.

Also this is me being selfish again but forget about the potential new fans Brit, as long as they keep the old ones happy then they'll be onto a winner.

The people that grew up with the show would more than likely tune in if they got the old crew back together.

In all seriousness i suppose your right in terms of new fans.

In terms of your character comment i agree but like i've said before to me Xander will always be Nick Brendon, Giles will always be ASH etc.

I don't think the old fans matter, and we shouldn't!

What we'll be looking for is the same show we had, with the same cast and writers, that is never going to happen,so they can't focus it at us, as too many of us will say, 'oh this is wrong, im not watching it'.

They have to aim it at the new generation to actually stay on, and they can do cameos or something else to keep old fans interested.

But I'd like to think Buffy could be a franchise rather then just a piece of work that only Joss can do. I've seen to many reboots that have worked to poo poo this one.
(Doctor Who, Star Trek, etc)

many of the remakes like Batman, have been amazing if not better than they were originally.
I strongly agree with this.

Batman is a mixed bag though. As much as I love The Dark Knight, I still see places where it's weak compared to BTAS. Bale has the look, and some acting chops, but no fans of both series think that his Batman can compare to Kevin Conroy's. The intensity and emotion, not to mention the voice are just on a whole other level with Conroy.

dan actually makes a good point with Spike, because, on paper he's a silly character, yet James made him into something special. Similar cases would be Fonzie, Kramer, Archie Bunker, or Lucy Ricardo. There really are some characters who are ridiculous on-paper, but made into something fresh by a specific actor...

BTAS is best..Conroy kills Bale..Bale's voice gives me nightmares as Batman lol
In my mind, the cast of the Buffy series will always be my favorite. I'm not opposed to seeing a new Buffy with new actors, though. However, if the new actors are going to be referred to as "Xander, Willow, Spike, etc." they need to have some similarities in appearance and definitely personality. I'd like to see the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" concept rise to the top of this vampire craze where it belongs. The only part I'm opposed to is the lack of involvment from Joss. Without his input, it would be difficult to capture the wit and plot-twists that Buffy is loved for. If he isn't interested in doing a reboot, then he probably believes there shouldn't be one.

I'm cool with a reboot. I think a 'next generation' thing would be really interesting. That said, I'd want new characters, not because I don't love the original ones (I really do!), but because I don't want and can't imagine any new actors playing Buffy, Spike, Angel, Giles etc. The original cast could just come back as their characters in cameo roles and be mentors to the younger generation or something. I don't know. Maybe I'd still like the old characters with new actors. After all, I really like the 2009 Star Trek movie and the actors in that.

Besides that, I'd really like to see a Spike movie or something, with James Marsters of course. And it should be done in the next couple of years before he gets too old. I doubt anything like that would happen, though, what with Joss being busy directing the Avengers and all that.

Possibly, someday, Buffy's original cast and crew might accept a reboot. Ideally, the producers behind that remake/reboot will have great respect for the franchise's story (including plot and characters). It is pretty clear that the reason most people oppose the Kuzuis' proposed remake is because they have proven that they don't have respect for the franchise. Perhaps more time is needed for diehard Buffy fans to become successful filmmakers and garner the support needed to produce an excellent Buffyfilm. I know that there are a lot of novelists who love the franchise, but I don't know about filmmakers.

i would love it when there's a new slayer is chosen, and a new sort of ''scooby-gang''.....
and the idea that the old scooby's and buffy come's sometimes helping sounds great.
only question by now is. should season 8 be a part of a possible buffy-reboot?

should be fun when David duchovny is the new watcher😀

or , when there should be some of funny scene's....like eddy murphy as the new giles😀

please dont hate me now😱😱

Go Marti 😀 reboot without Joss is ridiculous, when i found out i was so angry. And without the cast...*sigh* the idea of someone else playing Buffy is just pure stupid, this movie will definetly suck. I'll probably still check it though just out of curiosity, and then i'll rant about how much I hate it 😀

It's interesting that so many people want to pass judgment on this new BUFFY movie, because it's not being produced by Joss Whedon. They refuse to give it a chance. Which goes to show how narrow-minded and inflexible people really are.

Whatever. Call me narrow-minded and inflexible all you want, because I know that's not the case at all. I simply want nothing to do with something that doesn't feature the characters I grew to know and love. I think it's pretty freakin' stupid that Joss isn't doing the reboot, but then again I think a reboot is pretty freakin' stupid all by itself. There was nothing wrong with the franchise as it was.

I completely agree.

Far too many times have I seen books I love being virtually slaughtered for a big-screen adaption, I've lost my faith in Hollywood's ability to do anything right and without Joss and his vision at the helm of a Buffy franchise I just don't see the point. (Now even if Joss was spearheading this I would be hesitant towards it because, well just look at what he's doing with s8... but then to me he created the show I love and that to me means more than comic-book-strangeness.)

I don't trust Whit Anderson and those backing her to not fall into the traps of trying to make the reboot 'edgy' or 'cool' or 'youth oriented' and failing - thereby losing the heart of Buffy in their attempts to capture a new audience and most of all make some more money.

I personally don't really mind seeing a Buffy movie reboot, partly because I haven't seen the original movie and didn't watch the show live or anything...so I can't *really* say that I "grew up" with the show.
But I completely understand not wanting it to happen. Buffy means a lot to many people, me included. There's a lot of us who don't want to see it ruined by Hollywood's modern, 2010 standards- loads of special effects, glitzy actors and actresses, bad scripts, etc. Because let's face it. Even if it's not canon and it's not our Buffy, it's still the Buffy name. It's still our universe, still our girl.

I'm not one to completely dismiss a Buffy reboot, but I imagine it still hurts to be called narrow-minded or inflexible because someone doesn't share your opinion. Especially on a movie that hasn't come out yet.

I want a Buffy movie. I know its not going to be the show but if it gets people in the door and open to the idea of the TV series then Im all for it.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I think re-doing it with a new cast but same characters and same general concepts would be really interesting. Obviously, nothing can replace the original (nor should it!) but I wouldn't mind other people in the roles if the series/movie/what-have-you is re-done, to see how they play it. I think that could be fascinating.

i would have no problem with a reboot if there wasn't new things coming out of the television show. if it was done and gone for a while, i'd say ok. But we still have the comics following the storyline, and as long as there is some sort of continuation of story, even in a different medium, i feel like rebooting it is wrong.

Reboots should be saved for franchises and projects that have somewhat died out or have no new material and need to be reintroduced to a new generation. But no reintroduction is necessary, when the original story of buffy from the show isn't even over yet!

Good point.

Playing devil's advocate for a moment, it's also true that a lot of fans don't care for the comics and don't count it as canon anyway. Joss may be doing new stuff, but that doesn't necessarily mean it impacts the franchise, if we're talking about fan response.
Also, for academic reasons, the comics fundamentally can't count as canon because one can't retain text integrity while completely changing mediums.

Just some thoughts. 🙂

I agree with this. For me, the show would still have to be "on air" for it to be the true continuation, in terms of canon, for me. In books or comics is not the same and doesn't feel the same for me. So for me, it has been over since 2003. And rebooting, 8 years later could work. Though it might work better if they waited 10+ years)
