News Rebooting "Buffy" without Joss is "Ridiculous" -Marti Noxon

Buffy without SMG? no
there is only one buffy, and that's SMG. movie the big mistake byside.
her expression, her voice, her total acting. that's made Buffy (SMG).

The first actress to portray Buffy WAS NOT Sarah Michelle Gellar. It was Kristy Swanson. And I thought she did a pretty damn good job. So I see no reason why SMG should be the only actress to portray the role.

And if this new BUFFY movie should be made, I hope that its creators will get rid of that damn soul=conscience crap. It's so one-dimensional.

I believe that Joss hated the movie himself due to executive meddling

Hating the movie isn't the same as hating the story and it's the story they'll be bringing back. Well kind of since it seems to be set some years after the first movie but it's based on the same idea. And I'm pretty sure Joss didn't hate the idea since it was his own. 😉

There's no guarantee that the movie will be good or even close to good. But there's no guarantee that it'll be the opposite either. That's either what people are hoping since they don't want "their" Buffy, that's not the orginal Buffy as being stated times over, to get a bad reputation or what they're are afraid of. Being negative isn't the same as being right even if it at times obvioulsy is. You just can't know before hand no matter how often or loud you repeat it.

Yeah but Swanson didn't portray the character for 7 years and obviously didn't do that good of a job portraying Buffy in the first place or she would have been asked to play her again on the series, dont'cha think?

Joss has in the past let slip some little comments about what he didn't like where the movie was concerned and they had to do with the unwillingness of the director(s) to accept any input on his part (hence the poor make-up) and the actors who were involved not taking the character's seriously enough (hence the "camp" feel to their portrayal's and the director(s) allowing that "camp" feel which Joss never intended in the writing)
I thought it was a bit telling when Swanson came out and publicly commented that she felt that she was owed some back pay as a result of having played the role FIRST which obviously had something to do with the series success!
I don't like the movie as it completely missed the mark IMHO and apparently Joss felt the same way or he wouldn't have gone on to make the series with a completely different set of actor's. A show doesn't last for SEVEN YEARS without something about it that endears it to the audience.

The SERIES is the Buffy that Joss wanted all along but let's NOT forget that he sold the rights to Buffy back when the movie was made! They can do anything they want to it without asking his permission...though I, like many fan's, don't want to see another Buffy Movie without his involvement.

I've long said I don't feel that SMG will involve herself with ANY Buffy Movie in the future as she washed her hands of it all when the series ended due to having been talked into signing a contract for two more seasons after season five! Joss being distracted by other movies such as Fire-Fly and not being able to interest SMG in new Buffy in any way is why we haven't seen any new Buffy with the original series cast and most likely never will with SMG in it.

I for one don't care if SMG ever returns to the role. The show for me was so great due to the writing and the seriousness with which the actors played their roles. I don't feel it was made on the back of SMG.

There's another way of looking at this, however. The more that the proposed reboot differs from the TV series, which we all love so much, the easier it's going to be to let the movie stand on its own merits. Make the new Buffy Summers as different from Sarah's interpretation as night to day. No Sunnydale, no Watchers, no scoobies, a totally different character with a totally different background and a totally different reason for being the Slayer. Have vampires who can turn into bats or clouds of smoke, with the closest thing to a "game face" is the baring pf snake like fangs.

Let's face it, Joss can tell a helluva tale, but he's not the only writer in Hollywood capable of writing a story about somebody intentionally hunting vampires. Everybody raved about Daniel Craig's new interpretation of James Bond, and Jeff Bridges' portrayal of Rooster Cogburn has the critics swooning. Neither Sean Connery or John Wayne are in any way threatened by the new portrayals. WE know who the "real" Buffy is, but that doesn't mean that we have to blindly condemn something that we haven't even seen yet. This movie, from everything that I've heard about it, is just another attempt to cash in on the current vampire craze. It's being made for the general public, not just the fans of Joss and Sarah, because, let's face it, there aren't enough of us to really make or break any movie.

If for no other reason, I'm looking forward to the production and release of the new Buffy movie, just for all of the cussing and DIScussing that we're going to have here on the Boards. I think that we should all resolve to be in the audience the first time that this movie is played. Then we can hiss at the screen or cheer, as the situation presents itself. We all know that this movie isn't going to be about "our" Buffy. That doesn't necessarily have to mean that it won't be a good movie.

The more people that realize that the better. However most people (that are Buffy fans) seem to think "Not the Buffy we're used to = one crappy movie". If you watch the movie thinking and wanting it to be like the show it'll have to be amazing to convince you that it's at least decent. Different doesn't have to be the same as bad.

I'm sure I'll bang my head bloody against the wall trying to get people into that kind of thinking though. Or just make people mad since I never shut up about it. 😉

All the actors who starred in Buffy and all the producers and all the people who gave their heart for seven years are saying it's a bad, bad idea. Just saying..it should make you think. I think each and every one of the actors ad member of the crew or writing staff did their part to make Buffy incredible. This movie won't have the same magic Buffy had, I seriously dislike reboots with different actors or original creator..most of them suck and they should've never been done. Why do they suck? Because they just go in a total different direction, straining from what made the people fell in love with the original (not thinking about the original Buffy movie, I'm talking about the tv show). These are people that don't care about the story, the mind behind it...we have to consider that nowadays VAMPIRES SELL. And that's what they care about. Now, I may be close-minded..ok, then I am..I don't wanna see a Buffy played by some chick..if they wanted to base the story on Joss' original idea and take inspiration for something different then it was fine, but using the names and stuff from the story is just awful. This whole thing reeks of money to me...I guess I'm the only one who doesn't want this to happen.

But you can think different things about it.

Anyhoo. Thinking that it's a bad idea and saying that the movie will suck is not the same to me.

This whole thing reeks of money to me...
Most definitely. There's no doubt in my mind about that.

But then again. What "big" movie isn't about making money? Of course that's not what they're saying but lets face it. What company/people would invest the amount of money in making an entertainment movie if they didn't think they could gain even more money on it?

I guess I'm the only one who doesn't want this to happen.
Sarcasm?

Oh, I think no one's saying it sucks because they can't in public but I'm sure they're all thinking it.

Of course every movie makes money but when it's..how shall I put it..a brand new movie with an "original idea" (as if...) then it's their business. When they make money over something that already was successful (tv show) to say the least and taking its ideas, that's when I have a problem with it, especially if it's something I love.

This made me smile (in a good way 😛)..I'll leave that up to you..ahah.

I'm not as sure but I actually meant people in general like on this board. Hating the idea no matter the reason (it's done to make money, Joss isn't involved neither is the cast etc) is one thing. Claiming it to suck before it's made? Well that's just being stubborn if you ask me. A lot of people will disagree with that though and that's their right.

especially if it's something I love.
True for many reasons. Most people wouldn't have the energy to trying to put down a movie they don't care about. But what if the movie was made with Joss involved, or at least with his blessing? If the old cast was in the movie? When it would be ok to do a movie since it's the same people as before? After all it would just continue from the show and not make it different right? That would be a good thing? No matter if the producers want to make it for making money of the current vampire love? Everything can be seen as negative if you want to.

The comics are just the same without the actors isn't it? Joss is involved and hopefully it has his blessing. But perhaps some fans would like it if he's forced to do it against his will considering some of the things that happens. 😉 So is the cast or Joss the ones that need to be aboard a project that's important?

The movie will be different from the tv-show. That's the whole point. I'd be more upset if they tried to remake the show to be honest. Because I doubt they could do that nearly as good. For the moment I'm sad that Joss isn't involved but I'm curious about how the movie will turn out. I really, really doubt I'll like it anything close to as much as I love the show but to me that isn't the point.

This made me smile (in a good way 😛)..I'll leave that up to you..ahah.
Smiling is good so yay?

I just have a feeling about it...usually these things suck...that's why I have this very strong reaction to it (and for many other reasons too). It maybe be decent but I'm still finding the thing that makes me say: I'll give it a chance.

I have a strong opinion about this too. If it was a movie involving Joss or have his blessings and some of the actors were involved I wouldn't be thrilled about the idea because Buffy finished years ago and that was the ending we achieved and there's no need to make a movie...but I wouldn't be horrified like I am now 'cause the creator and the actors I've seen and loved on the tv show would surely bring a little bit of the magic the show had but I think it would be a negative idea in general.

About the comics..they are nothing like tv show and I generally still don't like them because they don't give me the same feeling I had when watching Buffy storyline and for MANY other reasons too (but this is not the place to discuss the comics)..I read them and consider them canon (I posted something about comics and canon somewhere) only because Joss, the creator, is involved. It doesn't mean I like them (which, overall..I don't most of the time..a few issues make the exception) so yes, to make a good thing there has to be the original creator and the people who made it wonderful in the first place. That's why I'm against this movie: there's just NO NEED to do it...I can't see a reason why...expect for the most obvious (and awful) one. I don't wanna a forced Joss to work on it..I would just like some respect from these people because they're not fans of Buffy or fans of Joss' work and so they're paying a tribute by doing this movie..they're fans of money.

Smiling is good so yay?

YAY.

I don't know why it says my message is too short. I don't think sooo!
