Recommend me a comic.

Hey all,

i didnt want to make a new thread but wanted to ask a question, i'm interested in reading the "Preacher" series by garth ennis. Just wondering, there is a HC version coming out next month, how many issues does that contain?
I could get 9 tpb's but i would rather get some bigger HC versions, can anyone help with that?

Also i've read the first runaways volume which is fantastic, will be getting the rest of the series hopefully within the next couple of weeks as well as the 2 firefly comics and the first 2 y the last man HC's.

Howdy. 🙂

Vertigo | Graphic Novels

I think this is the new Preacher Hardcover you're talking about. It has the same title as the original paperback volume, but that only had 7 issues, this has 12.

The first hardcover collects 12 issues (basically the first 2 trade paperbacks). It retails for US$40.

If you haven't read any of this comic yet, I'd advise you to hold off on springing for the HC. I think Preacher is brilliant, but it's a controversial book and not everyone agrees.

My recommendation would be to get the first TPB and see if you like it before laying down all that money for the HC.

In case you didn't know, you can download a free (legal) PDF of the first issue here:

Yeah I agree. I love Preacher, but it is a hard book to recommend. It is controversial, and if you're easily offended, this is not a book to read.
The HC is pricey for something you may not wish to finish.

Thanks amigos.

You know what? I think i might just read that pdf andy and see if i like it. 🙂

I *hope* you like it. I love it, myself. I've read almost all the series Vertigo has published and never gone wrong with any of them. (Well, I couldn't really get into Grant Morrison's "The Invisibles".)

But Preacher, Transmetropolitan, Fables, Y: The Last Man, Sandman, Hellblazer (at least the Garth Ennis and Warren Ellis issues)... all winners.

Theyre all comics i want to check out, just havent got the "funds". All in good time though, i cant wait to go to my comic book store. I've never been to one before 😀 haha i feel like a little kid.

Btw, i have also been recommended Deadpool, have you guys ever read any of it?

I recommend:
The Goon: really funny film book with lots of zombie smashing and a film noir art style that makes it real purdy.
Batman: Dark Knight Returns and Dark Night Strikes Again. So good. Frank Miller's best. Sin City is a good read too.
Batman: The Long Halloween. I mystery about a killer who murders only on holidays. Tim Sale and Jeff Loeb are an awesome team, and this is their best.
The Boys: A different spin on hero books, where the superheroes are like over-indulging celebrities who're backed by the government, and the Boys need to keep them in check. Really bloody and alot of nudity, but its not cheapened by those things. Its a really good read.
Anything by Alan Moore. League of Extrodenary (sp?) Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, Watchmen, its all great.

I read the Deadpool comics from 1997. Written by Joe Kelly.
The were a fun read, with a great supporting cast - Weasel, Blind Al, Siryn. Very entertaining stuff, and often laugh-out-loud funny - issue 11 where he ends up in an old Spiderman story, is one of my favorite comic's ever.
Blind Al and Aunt May, funny stuff.
Joe Kelly left after issue 33 and so did I. I know he has had a few different comics since then. He's a cool character, and worth a read.
It has been ages since I read a Deadpool comic, I hope his story progressed well.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Fallen Angel. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fallen_Angel_(comics)

The writer, Peter David has written some Angel comics (Spotlight:Illyria). As a matter of fact, Illyria is making a guest apperance in four issues, issue 30-34 I belive(I might be wrong about the issue numbers).

It's a pretty dark comic,(sex with the bad guys, good guys going bad, that sort of thing), but it's not depressing.

Here's a preview of Illyria's apperance. RyallTime: Fallen Angel vs Illyria

PS. It had a run over at DC(12 issues), but is now with IDW.

I can't remember a clear difference, but it was a few months since I read it.

Very cool. I will be reading this. 🙂 IMO Peter David is the best comic writer out there, so this should be sweet.

Has anyone mentioned Birds of Prey yet? Excellent comic, the best run of which was written by Gail Simone -- the one non-Buffyverse writer I would most like to see write for the Buffyverse. She has a unique sense of humor and way with words that often reminds me of Whedon, Espenson, Goddard, etc.

It's not really anything like that short-lived TV show that was supposedly based on it.

Highly recommended. The series recently came to an end after 10 years and 127 issues, but Gail Simone's entire run has been collected in trade paperbacks. In order:

1. Of Like Minds
2. Sensei & Student
3. Between Dark & Dawn
4. The Battle Within
5. Perfect Pitch
6. Blood and Circuits
7. Dead of Winter

Crazy Flakes
This is really late, but MAJOR Birds of Prey karma!

Boy, if Armstrong could capture the voice of Angel half as well as Ryall did Illyria, Aftermath wouldn't be getting panned...

I've liked Brian Michael Bendis' work, especially Jinx (and Powers: Who Killed Retro Girl was also pretty good.

Also:

Leave It To Chance: Shaman's Rain
Sin City: The Hard Goodbye
Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
The Mask (much different than the movie, and very well written and drawn)
The Dirty Pair: A Plague of Angels
Maison Ikkoku (manga)
Video Girl Ai (manga)
Akira (manga)
Concrete: Fragile Creature
Danger Girl (not great, but a fun read)

I've always wanted to get sin city, loved the movie but the artwork in the comics have kind of put me off.

I just ordered a massive batch on amazon, will arrive in the next couple of weeks....
