With Halloween coming up, I've a hankering for a good Halloween book. Right now I'm reading HP Lovecraft's the Shunned House.

Anyone have any good recommendations for Halloween season reading?

🙂

This or.. I don't know if I'd call it scary as much as tension, but Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk or Chambers' The King in Yellow.

LMFAO - that WOULD keep me up all night screaming.
I'd suggest having a look at the books by Kelley Armstrong, depending on which ones you can find in the bookshops you go to, most of them are quite good.

If you can find it:

"Wolfen" Whitley Strieber

Read it, and you'll never walk into a dark alley again without wondering... are they watching?

(But ignore the movie. It was awful!)

Really? I've heard the exact opposite of the book. They do use real wolves in the film. They're very intimidating.

I love that film. It's easily one of my favourite "horror" films. I love that they filmed in the South Bronx inside the abandoned churches and ruined buildings, all ready for being demolished. I guess a lot of people expected werewolves and big horror scenes that didn't happen. The angry running theme of gentrification and the human ignorance of ecology, those cinematic shots up on the Brooklyn Bridge, with Albert Finney looking genuinely terrified, all while having a pretty intense conversation on top of the bridge with the Native American construction worker. Oh my gawd, I love it.

If you liked the movie, read the book. The movie is a candle, the book is a bonfire. Just a hint: the real Wolfen are are most definitely NOT white German Shepherds.

I feel like my brain has been licked by a drooling dog and was left dripping. Seriously, that's how good this book was! Unreliable narrators at its force! And that twist, god, that twist!

blueeyedboy written by Joanne Harris is the latest book I read and I couldn't put down.

Once there was a widow with three sons, and their names were Black, Brown and Blue.

Black was the eldest; moody and aggressive.

Brown was the middle child; timid and dull

But Blue was his mother’s favorite. And he was a murderer.

The book starts with B.B. posting fics in his wejay (web journal) which I read in my head as LJ - livejournal. I loved the whole fic thing with the readers leaving feedbacks to the murder stories B.B. posts in his wejay. Unique and refreshing. Gives it a modern feel.

Without giving away too much of the plot, the Wolfen, as portrayed in the book, were the equivalent of a higher order descended from a canine ancestry the way that humans are descended from primates. They were the true life source of the legends of werewolves, with intelligence and a racial culture the equivalent to humanity, but, obviously, far fewer in number and far more savage.
