Rent-a-sister: Coaxing Japan’s young men out of their rooms

Hikikomori?

As soon as they gave it a name, they made it trendy.

It's not unexpected for a generation that lives their lives 100% electronically. I figure that within 2 or 3 generations we won't even have physical bodies anymore.

Ahh so it wasn't an actual asteroid that killed off the humans. Maybe it is the game Asteroids that electronically gave them gamers the shock of their lives, and it was so good no one finished the game. With the Japanese dead due to the game Asteroids no one knew of the tsunami that destroyed the Nuclear power station, so it kept spewing the radioactive cloud of destruction all over the world.

Oh look, another thing on the internet I am confused by. I had read the wiki page on the night this was posted but haven't really read a lot into it. According to wiki, this doesn't exist in low income families.

That's where I am torn. I agree social pressure has much to do with it, but in families without the income to support an adult child in the home - the men HAVE to deal with the world, there is no other choice. I don't know if this leads to suicide or being let to stay in isolation and uselessness leads to suicide. Anyone got those kind of stats? I might read more on it later if I am bored enough, but its likely to be another thing to drive me batty. The wiki page also said it was not a mental disorder, though they show signs of depression and anxiety, the current trend of anyone who spends time online. A family unit being disappointed in a child is not a new phenomenon, the generation of today seems far less able to deal with that sort of rejection, even outside of Japan.

If it is a disability, why is it not being dealt with like other disabilities? What happens to adult children with high needs disabilities? If this is classed as a disability should they not enter the disability care system like other adults with disabilities? Are they highly reactive to stimuli like Autism? Or are they faking their way through a system they don't understand, like retardation? If these sisters count as a treatment, then they should make at least as much as a psychiatrist does, they'll certainly clock up more hours than one. But would that tip the balance of their social structure with women making that much dosh?

If it is a lifestyle choice, why do the parents support it? They can enter a low pressure job and stay in it for life (that was my plan haha, until there were no actual jobs for physically disabled women in my area) especially with the availability of housing there. If they are all united together in a common non interest, why are there no group supports? Even online - or are there? Are they all supporting each other in isolated misery to never take any responsibility at all for themselves?

I gets jack of this cos I would love to get back to work, I find the pressures of unemployment MUCH harder to deal with than the pressures of work life. The limited income, the low social status, the boredom. Then disgust expressed by society towards those living on welfare and trying to enjoy it. It is way more difficult to deal with isolation and boredom than the parental pressure of getting a life. I have sympathy to a point, but then there is an element of well get over it or get out of it. I support voluntary euthanasia for those who find this world too much to deal with. Why continue the suffering of someone who has decided the world is to much? If suffering is what they are doing? Or do they have the choice to like it?

(this is a rant in my typical aussie tone - the questions are sincere but I am unsure how to provoke the actual answers to my questions rather than "well they are mentally ill so they shouldn't have to take responsibility" cos that isn't how it happens in the world I live in.)

Agreed. We have already seen this over and over again in the world. Its leading to a new sort of self imposed suffering.

too many damned goody goody's saying stuff like the person who is last should be congratulated for taking part not told they are a useless loser.
thetopher,
didn't you realize the N. Koreans weren't firing at Japan the just wanted to see how far they could get one.

Also, some for shy, reserved teenagers, who are lonely and insecure the internet has become the perfect tool for isolation. Why bother making friends irl when you can go online and make friends? You can meet people who share every niche interest, play video games, write fan fiction, spend hours on forums. Xander would never have to leave his room.
(please don't feel obliged to reply GraceK, your words were just relevant to this discussion)

Hey, will this be the next lifestyle choice with a hashtag? Cos if it is, I could probably live like that. But I need a much smaller house and no garden or pets. This one is too big and requires too much upkeep for me to be totally reclusive. I need some community involvement in order to survive (physically and financially), but that isn't an issue for the wealthy. The thought of living in a smaller, easier, climate controlled space with all nutritional and emotional needs met sounds a little bit heavenly on days I am drained. Maybe I was trained for it living on psych wards for so long. Free and Sober me can't get much crazier.

I reckon I should find one of these men with a super rich family so he can pay for my upkeep in Oz and come on pre arranged time limited social visits including physical activities outdoors. We'll call it social therapy, and they can pay me billions.

Is this Hikikomori a problem or actually the way of the future? Like so many other lifestyle choices that have demanded their right to be, is it just scary for those of us who need community?
