(Hi, I'm new to this board, so tell me if I'm doing something wrong, thanks.) For some reason I really disliked Riley. From the start, I just knew that he was going to die or leave and (SPOILERS) I was glad when he did. I'm still not sure why I disliked him so much. Maybe I was too loyal to Angel+Buffy. Did anyone else feel this way as they watched season four?

Yes, I felt that way.
Yeah, most people don't like Riley, but I don't have a problem with him. He's kinda cute and in the beginning he made Buffy happy, and she finally had a normal life. She never loved him as she loved Angel, not even close, and I knew that's not going to last. He's to ordinary for her.
 
First time around I really disliked Riley too, he's grown on me a bit since then, but yeah I'll never adore him. I always felt he was kind of lame as a character in general, not only as B's boyfriend.
 
Yeah, almost nobody actually likes Riley. 😉 I practically hated him in my first watch, but as I rewatched I warmed up to him a little bit. (sw) There are a lot of things that bother me about him, but I've already ranted about those. 😀 I dunno, he had some funny lines, but he was really badly written. 🙂

Riley's terrible, lol. Rewatches tend to strengthen my hate for him. I just find more & more reasons to dislike him 😛
 
Riley started out okay. It was after "Hush" that he really started to get annoying, and s5 just killed him. However, I did like his appearance in s6.
 
I was very glad when he left. Before Riley was this big Commando army guy, he wasn't too bad, I just thought of him as an ordinary person and a good friend of Buffy's. Then when he was revealed to be working with the Season's "Big Bad", the intense hate came in. He couldn't be trusted. Then when him and Buffy got together, they were kissing every single episode which annoyed the hell out of me. I was hoping he would die, disappointed to see him in the comics.
 
Riley for me falls into the "ok" bracket. Nothing to really like, on the other hand nothing to really loathe about the guy.
 
I wish people wouldn't say that the widespread hatred for Riley is because the fans couldn't get over Angel. I don't think that's true. Riley was simply too mysogynistic (sp?) to date a girl like Buffy. Buffy features strong female characters and guys like Riley don't handle strong women very well. Riley was uncomfortable with Buffy's strength but he tried to adjust by having her join the Initiative which was his baby with his friends in his world. When that didn't work out he never really could adjust to Buffy's friends and Buffy's world. He needed to be needed by Buffy and while Buffy cared for him it didn't satisfy him because she wasn't dependent on him. That's what I think he really meant when he said "She doesn't love me." I think Buffy did love Riley but she wasn't dependent on him like he wanted her to be. The sad thing about Riley is he is trying to be a good person but his mysogyny is just too deep rooted and subtle for him to pick up on and fix.
 
Well, I was never really fond of Bangel so that's clearly not the reason why I dislike Riley.

I actually don't dislike him. He has a lot of bad sides and some good sides.
My problem is that for me, he is just there.
Either there or in the way.
He has no spark! I mean, every character of the Buffyverse has something, even if it's charachter that are really wrong (like Warren, he gives me the yiks and yet, I liked him in the show more than Riley...Well, he was better!)
I don't know if it's because of Marc Blucas acting, or because of the character, or both, but really, when he is there, I just don't feel anything about him. Not love, not hate...Just Riley.

And I don't know anyone who loves him!
The few people I know in Belgium who love Buffy (my mother and a few friends) all say "Huh, Riley! I was happy when he left!"
And in a french magazine, there was once a big poll on Buffy (most frightening episode, best villain,....) and Riley was the "character people love the less"


It's kind of sad that no one seem to really like him!

That being said Riley was cute and sometimes funny. It wasn't that he was horrible it is just what did he do besides leave Buffy to stand out? I didn't get attached to him, and I don't blame that on Marc I blame that on the writers. I love Marc outside of Buffy and watch his things as much as I can.
Overall I think Riley was kind of a experiment on all levels lets see how Buffy deals with a normal human boyfriend. Personally I miss Parker 😉 I kid I kid.

Yeah, he had some lines that make me laugh or like him a bit but...not enough i guess
