Romance Subplots in the Fantasy/SF/Superhero Genre: What's Your Opinion?

Amara's character is extraordinarily annoying. She's like this old Playboy bunny whose mind is obliterated by bad drugs. I LOATHE this woman. She needs to leave this show and get back on her stripper pole in hell.

LOL... yeah, there are so many good moments on that show. That one kills me. Not literally but still.
 
I have a real problem with romance, don't ask me why. There's a reason romcoms are my least favorite movie genre, and I don't want it mucking up otherwise good movies or tv shows! I feel like that might be a huge part of why I fell in love with Supernatural. I mean, it took a few seasons to realize that the status quo here was not romance, but then, as it went on, there were less and less minor romances, too, until they all but filtered out completely... I LOVED that 😀

That being said, if it's a show where it's either meant to be from the beginning (like Castle, no one doubted that was coming) or if the chemistry is just so powerful that the writers write it in when it wasn't supposed to be there (like Ness in New Girl) then I'm ok with it. I just don't need it taking over or being really unbelievable due to bad chemistry.

Another example is what the 2 creators did in latter seasons of Friends, by putting Joey and Rachel together; I loved that, because it was such a realistic way of exploring romances that would never work out, but that you make the mistake of entering into anyway. I also love that it had been planned from the beginning to go badly.
 
To make a show popular, the belief is that there MUST be shipping. And maybe they're right, though the Star Trek and Babylon 5 shows (at least what I saw of them) seemed to do okay without letting such stories dominate the series. (I also preferred Mulder and Scully as platonic, as they were for many seasons.)

Sorry to hear Jessica Jones has a lot of it, as that's a show I want to see based on what little I know of it, but hearing that's a major part of it makes me less eager to see it. Still, I tolerate the shipping just like the fan service, as long as it enhances the story and characters (or at the very least doesn't ruin these things) then it's okay, I might even like it.

I've seen (and love) Jessica Jones, and I'm admittedly confused by this. I very much don't remember any romances that didn't fit in perfectly with the plot and characters, or took over what the premise was about or what themes it was introducing. I definitely think you should still watch it and judge for yourself, and I'm a romance/ship despiser by nature 🙂
