I just dont understand why everyone is so upset that she attacked someones LOOKS. Like that is the most racist thing anyone could do? To make a bad joke about someone elses physical features??

Here i was thinking racism meant cutting off clean water supplies to majority black towns, or condemning people of colour to generations of poverty. Whoops nope, sorry, the aussies done it again. The WORST racists make a joke about facial structure 🙄

The idea is that a black president is the first step in the blackpocolypse. Soon we will have a "planet of the apes" where everyone is forced to be Muslim. Also, the comparison to apes suggests that black people are further down on the evolutionary ladders, a belief that has justified slavery, genocide, apartheid and all kinds of ugly things.

That's a shame, all around… I know a lot of people who enjoyed that show and who'll be upset to see it go over a tweet. It seems a shame that a whole show is now labeled racist because of the actions of one person (compare with Joss Whedon who can do no wrong and if he does it's all "oh the shows are a group effort, not just his work"... why isn't that a thing here? What about everyone else on the show? Why do they deserve to lose their jobs or for their show not to be aired at all anymore?) Not excusing Barr, I'm not informed enough about her general actions or opinions because I'm not on Twitter, but however you spin it this is just furhter politicizing everything and deepening the divide between people.

I like the idea I saw about them just replacing Rosanne in the show with Danny DeVito and not adressing the switch at all...😎

I don't see what Joss has to do with this. His "crimes" (which again I remind you are so far unproven) have already been covered in some depth in another thread. Plenty of people have knocked Joss. So I don't even see the argument that he can do no wrong etc...

IMO her comment was racist and mis-guided. Whether that makes her racist I'm not so sure. Cancelling the show straight away might be a bit much. Guess its just the sort of society we live in etc... Point is it was a silly thing to say.

Haha, gees, sorry I dared to bring up JW even though it's been talked about before, you needn't remind me about anything or insinuate where I ought to post things. It was a simple comparison because it sprung to mind and it was more about the defense about how when Joss is criticized, people are very quickly to ditch him and talk about the "group effort" of the show (someone posted an entire article about it).

But again this is not limited to 'black' people so I really don't get the drama. Maybe because I'm not American? Just search for 'George Bush Monkey' and you will be bombarded with memes, videos and articles. So it was done to a freaking President before. That's not racist I take it? To suggest that Bush is down the evolutionary ladder? Pretty sure other white people are also constantly compared to monkeys, apes and gorillas including Trump. Again a President. So it's only racism if it goes one way? But it wouldn't be if all 'black' people called 'white' people animal names?

She's free to make racist remarks, others are free to defend her right to make those remarks and others are free to distance themselves from her. It's how I think this sort of thing should be resolved as much as possible. I don't like to see the law wading in and curtailing the rights of people to think and speak freely and I personally find it better to know where the racists are at.

Yes there are a lot of instances of this in various different countries and I find it a scary precedent to set. There has to be a line, you can't have people harassing others or inciting violence or whatever else but people should be entitled to their views even if they are vile.

No. I was merely suggesting that, because of Germany's complicated history with race, nationality and identity, you and everyone else living there should be just as well versed in this discourse as any American.

No - it's not racist because the evolutionary discourse was never used against the white race to condone practices such as chattel slavery. A similar discourse (though not using the same terminology) was used in 30s/40s Germany to condemn a people based on their ethnicity (irrespective of the colour of their skin). Calling white people "monkeys" doesn't have a place in in the history of racism - calling black people by the same does. As I understood it, the laws in Germany are strident because the Government acknowledges the past. Which is what I presumed @WillowFromBuffy was alluding to: the German Government makes no secret of where it stands on racism.

Learning from one's countries past/history is nice and all but being stuck in it and clinging to it to defend the present doesn't really work for me. Doesn't every western country have equality in their law, constitution or whatever? Whether that's the equality of race, sex, religion or whatever else. It's not equality if one section can do one thing that is denied the other and vice versa, especially when it comes to things like freedom of speech. That's the very thing that will breed resentment and lead to the things people are trying to fight, like racism. You can't apply double standards everywhere. Either something is allowed for everyone, regardless of gender or skin color or it's forbidden for everyone.

After like five seconds of googling I found out that Rosanne was tweeting racist stuff like that already in 2013, comparing POC to apes, so ABC must've known that when they decided her values clicked well enough with theirs like a year or two ago when they decided to bring back Rosanne, i.e. when they got into business with her. Canceling the show now makes it looks like (a. hating jews is still ok) it's ok to be a racist, just don't be public about it while you're currently in business with us.

Religion is another matter entirely - I've noticed more than a few people consider anyone who believes in god or angels or satan to need the socially acceptable kind of drugging. At the rate Islam is growing, there will be more practicing muslims in the world than christians. Did she laugh in the face of danger and then run away? Could it be the truth in joke form? I dont understand the huge offence when there are worse examples of race inequality in the world. Why cant america get this up in arms about living conditions and rights for all coloured humans on the planet instead of chunking a tanty that she phrased a bad joke in a way some people didnt like. She didnt have to apologise, but she did, to me that indicates that she did not mean offence. Its proven twitter is powerful. *hands up I admit I am probably a racist when it comes to world wide standards. I do not mean to offend but it is so casual here that I surely do, it is not with malicious intent and I am still trying to get my head around how to address our 'black brothers' as my neighbour calls them. See, racism in oz isnt towards the colour of ones skin - it is hideously and exclusively aimed towards the first nation people. I had NO idea how bad it was as I had been living in an migration area full of Dutchies and Poms before going regional. Generations of immigrants here have learnt to hate mobs from the immigrants before them, its hard to know how not to be an accidental racist because the wording and phrasing is so ingrained into society. The casual aussie view is that aboriginals (regardless of skin tone) are dangerous alcoholics and not worth feeding. Obviously I do not agree with this which is why I get so upset that I see worse racist behaviour practically daily and no one in the world is saying "hey lift your game" to under performing countries with all the power of the free speech on the internet.

I wasn't thinking exclusively of the distant past or even the past at all. Immigration, Syria, Turkey, EU, the Schengen Agreement, the reunification of east and west... These things may not matter to you, but they seem to matter to may of other people in Germany.

Why do I bother really? I pretty much said the past matters as they got us to where we are NOW. But ignore that, as usual. And since you ignored everything else I wrote, I guess you aren't a supporter of equality then.

This has always been Roseanne. Go back 30 years and you will see various instances of controversy surrounding things she has said. She is 65 and she has only spiraled into a more outrageous, bats*it crazy person. That being said, this reaction is extreme.

Canceling a show because an actor says something vile is unbelievable to me. Actors say vile things all the time. A few years ago i found out that John Lennon was actually a pretty terrible person in real life . It was devastating but I didn’t burn all his music. I still love his music and appreciate that he made something beautiful and he was a true artist. I’m not comparing Roseanne Barr to John Lennon in anyway ( as if) but my basic point is that when did we stop separating the entertainer from the entertainment? She didn’t kill anyone. She didn’t rape anyone. She wasn’t involved with dogfighting. She got on twitter and went on a cuckoo rant like every does at some point after a few beers. People need to calm down and stop pretending that they had no clue who this women is and who they hired.

Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. I think more people need to understand that. She deserved to be fired from her job.
