Veronica Mars can raise more than $5 million for a movie, why can't Buffy do it?
That's the Q we just posed to Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar, given that Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the greatest cult TV shows of all time. And while the resident slayer is not totally on board, there is a teensy-tiny sliver on hope for fans!

"Joss and I always talk about [a movie]," Gellar told me during an interview for E! News. "But the thing with Buffy is that Buffy was a movie, and it ultimately didn't work as a film. And I mean, we had such miles to overcome when we were trying to do a TV show based on a movie. And one of the reasons is that the story works better over time."
And now here comes the tiny sliver: "If there was ever the right story, we would do it."
We'll take it! Right, fans? Even though Gellar also jokes that, "At this point, the stake would be my walker and I would be hobbling in."

Gellar (who is only 36, mind you) is promoting The Crazy Ones, her new CBS comedy starring a young up-and-comer named Robin Williams, who plays her dad. Heard of him? Oh right, he is a legendary actor who got his start on TV with Mork and Mindy (a Happy Days spinoff) in 1978. This new CBS comedy from David E. Kelley is Williams' first foray back on the small screen.

"It was an amazing experience [shooting the first episode]" Robin tells me, "because it's been 32 years since I've been on network TV and a regular of a series, so I came in sort of like [looks terrified], "˜Oh, this is nice.' Then I started to relax. Because it's shot like a movie. There was no studio audience. Because the first live audience for Mork and Mindy was from a mental institution and they laughed at everything."

For the record, Williams is very clear that there are no plans whatsoever to ever reprise his role as Mork from Ork, in a movie or otherwise. So you can keep the dollar bills you've been saving for that.

Gellar and Williams' new series The Crazy Ones, also starring James Wolk (of Mad Men's "Not great, Bob!" fame), premieres this fall on CBS.

I agree with her, but they could make a great story for a two hour movie. It's not like each episode continued the arc of the season, a lot of seasons had stand alones and filler episodes 😛

The way I see it, Buffy does work better on TV, but if they can make a fantastic Star Trek movie, or Serenity movie, I'm sure they could make a decent Buffy movie 🙂

That being said, I don't think it will ever get made.

I agree. They should only make a Buffy movie if there's a story that makes sense as a movie.
If they ever made a new Buffy movie, it shouldn't be just good or okay, it should blow everybody's fricking mind! And unless they have a mind-blowing script, they should leave Buffy alone.

But it's great to hear Sarah herself talk about the possibility of making a movie.
 
I agree with Brink that this is just fan service. It's easy to say when you don't really mean it. Plus, Joss only said two weeks ago that he thinks Buffy is best being left as is in terms of on screen story, so I'm totally side-eying the whole "Joss and I talk about a movie all the time", quote.
 
I feel like she's open for Buffy now, it's just how I feel.

Since Season 8 and 9 have been made it's kinda hard to come up with something but if they really wanted to make a Buffy movie they would have done it already. I don't believe a reboot would make the series any justice, have been already rebooted once (and for the better.... much better)

I still think making Season 8 & 9 come to life would be the best choice, a movie simply doesn't offer much, a series is much richer.

This. If the whole cast and crew + Joss wanted to make the movie 100%, they would make that "right story" in a heart beat.
 
Joss already screwed over my favorite characters in the comics, so I’m not really interested in a movie taking place in the Buffy verse. I consider the live-action series real canon, and don’t want them to screw it up.

Besides, I always found Not Fade Away to be the perfect end of the Buffyverse. A movie would have to take time to explain what happened in LA, what happened to Angel,Spike, Illyria, Gunn, and the status of Wolfram & Hart. If they’d want Angel and Spike in the movie they’d have no choice but to explain.

Not to mention fan favorites Spike and Angel would look considerably older, and most of the other fan-favorites are dead.

Now, if they made a Wes, Illyria, and Faith spin-off right after Angel season 5 ended... that would have been perfect.

i agree if they wanted to they could have a script for a movie wrote in a heartbeat

buffy may work better on tv but there were so many stand alone episodes i don't see that writing a movie that works well would be beyond them by any stretch of the imagination

and Gellar saying her and joss talk about a movie all the time probably means they mention it once a year in a casual conversation over memories of making the show.

part of me will always want a movie adaptation with the same cast, just like i'd like a friends one, but another part of me says just let it be and live up the memories with my dvd boxsets

the more years go by the less likely i think it will ever happen, and if one was to happen i believe it would more than likely end up being a re-vamp (however there is no one who would ever be able to portray spike or giles the same)

Yeah this is total fan service, she can't say no cuz it will piss off the main core of her fan base.

Seeing how Joss made a season 8 and 9, couldn't see there being a problem with a script.

Saying it was a movie and didn't work, is completely not relevant either, the TV show is a completely different animal. I really doubt if they announced a Buffy movie tomorrow, anyone would be like: "their making a sequel to that 1980's movie?!?"

She often says stuff like this when she's doing promotions, she was talking allot about Buffy when she was promoting Ringer as well.

Nothing wrong with that, but this story was actually on the radio today here in Ireland and got reported as SMG says she'd be up for doing a movie, which wasn't what she said at all really.

Joss should call her on her bluff, bet if he said he had the script ready and was just waiting for this day we'd see a Sarah shaped hole in the nearest wall.

Chances are it could, but why bother? Kickstarter type film are usually films that can't raise money from film financing people/institutions.
Who funds kickstarter projects? The person in the street, generally they want to see that project happen.
Do they get repaid, generally no but a film financing company/person would.
Films can be made for 2 or $300,000 and if there is no money to fork out then any of the cast or crew who work for a royalty can expect a huge amount of money.
But the senior members of the crew would have a lot less stress, grey hairs, if a company was to say that they would fund the project.
What would happen if JW and SMG were to make a Buffy movie, one thing is for sure. They would not need to do a Kickstarter project, the finances would be there, offered by financial institutions.

As the Buffy franchise was a highly successful one, why risk spoiling it?
They could make a Buffy type film, that is, it could be about a girl who hunts vampires. One of the problems is there has been about 200 vampire films made, so it'd have to have a new twist on the subject.
If she (the vampire hunter) has any form of divine assistance, it will be classified as a Buffy movie.
Maybe if JW or SMG were unsuccessful and nearly broke, then they would look at making another Buffy movie, but they are not.
They are my opinions.
 
Sarah also said at one time that the Buffy story is best understood as a story arc taking place over a protracted period of time and the a movie is not the right venue to do it justice. And I agree with that statement.

I get the impression the actors are pretty much doing it for nothing, they mentioned in one of the updates that Max Greenfiled (who's on New Girl now) offered to fly himself out there and work for free, but they had to pay him legally.

I think the 5M is going to sets and production, cuz I was honestly expecting it to look like a Hallmark movie, but in the trailer you couldn't tell there was such a small budget!

This is also why something like Kickstarter wouldn't work for BtVS, I dont think some of the actors would do it for next to nothing.
 
They only wanted $2m. To me, VM always looked to have a low production value.

I agree, the actors wouldn't just do it for the craic. Though I think Buffy would raise more money in a Kickstarter.
 
I still don't think they could make much of a movie for $5 million, even not paying the actors...and what are they going to market it with?
