Actually I think that only Friday and Saturday are used in the process of adding up the weekend total. Because it is always announced Sunday and I don't think that many people see movies on a Monday night.

So has anyone heard how much the Grudge cost to make?

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- North America box office celebrated Halloween holiday a week earlier this weekend with the debut of horror thriller "The Grudge," which took the first place with 40 million US dollars, according to studio estimates released Sunday.

The low-budget Japanese haunted-house horror movie, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, was adapted from a Japanese horror movie. Its first three-day opening sales nearly doubled the expectations of its distributor, Columbia Pictures.

The film, which costs only 10 million dollars, was directed by Japanese director Takashi Shimizu, who also made the Japanese original "Ju-On." A sequel is expected to be made upon the success of the movie.

"Grudge" ended the three-week rule of the box office by DreamWorks' animation hit "Shark Tale,"

Saw a trailer for it earlier. Advanced screenings in the UK on Sunday 31st (how apt) but im at work, grr work!

Actually, anyone know where its showing in the UK? Just checked Vue, Odeon and UCI, the three nearest to me and still no sign of The Grudge.

Wow 10 million that is pretty cheap. Sarah must have taken a HUGE pay cut if that estimate includes the star's salaries. Because rumor was she made up to 6 million on Scooby Doo alone.
 
It's possible her Scooby deal included points of the gross. That would explain the high estimate.

I heard she auditioned for The Grudge. She seemed willing to make concessions.

It's starting to look like it was a good career decision. She's been around the biz a long time. I'm guessing she's a savvy business woman.
 
Yeah I saw that episode of Fashion Police. I thought she looked adorable. Personally, a lot of the things that are considered fashionable, just don't look good on some people. It's more about knowing what works with you and going with that!
 
I'm still shocked it got number 1 and made so much. I hope she can build on this. Of course she just may end up being the next scream queen and not do much more diverse acting.

I saw her outfit. She looked nice. When it comes to fashion I think SMG could be the next Sarah Jessica Paker towards trend setting.
 
I went and saw The Grudge on opening night last Friday, I really liked it! It totally scared me.

The Grudge had an excellent plot, creepy yet 'normal' settings, and good frights. Oh and the score really added to the movement and feel of the movie. I liked the unfamiliarity of Tokyo...it let us feel as displaced as the American characters was...very unsettling. I LOVED the way they told the story, I loved how it wasn't chronological. The stories were so interesting.

So yes, there's my two cents worth. 🙂 I really want to see this movie again but 40 bucks for me and my hubby to go and see a movie......think I'll just wait for the DVD.

More GRUDGE

Hit horror flick THE GRUDGE, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, will get a sequel.

Stephen Susco, who wrote THE GRUDGE, will also pen the follow-up. Producers will be Sam Raimi, Rob Tappert, Roy Lee, and Doug Davidson, who all worked on the first movie. It is unknown at this point if Gellar will star in the sequel or if Takashi Shimizu will direct.

'Grudge' to Be a Fright on DVD

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Recent box office champ "The Grudge," a haunted-house horror starring Sarah Michelle Gellar (news), is slated to be released Feb. 1 on DVD and will include a featurette that asks why people seek out fear at the movies.


Michael Gillis, who produced the 12-minute "Under the Skin" short for Sony, said he sought the answer from author and New York University professor Joseph LeDoux, who has spent more than 30 years researching fear.


After interviewing LeDoux and vast numbers of moviegoers, Gillis came to one conclusion. "What it all really boils down to is that we go to the movie theater to be afraid because it is only there in the dark where we can face our worst fears, seemingly alone, yet knowing that we're really safe all together in the same place," Gillis said.


The Sony Pictures horror film, directed by Takashi Shimizu, has generated about $104 million at the North American box office, having cost less than $10 million to make. It is based on a Japanese film series, also directed by Shimuzu.


"The Grudge" DVD also includes a 55-minute five-part making-of documentary which includes 5-10 segments titled: "The Birth of The Grudge," "Myth of Ju-on," "Culture Shock: The American Cast in Japan," "Designing The Grudge House" and "A New Direction and Understanding Takashi Shimizu."

Dvds nowadays are being released very quickly.For example, movies that aired that year, are being released that same year.

Early details have begun to emerge on the Sam Raimi produced horror The Grudge which stars Sarah Michelle Gellar. The disc has been scheduled for release on the 1st February next year, and should set you back around $28.95. As well as an anamorphic widescreen transfer and English Dolby Digital 5.1 track, the disc is set to include an audio commentary with Sam Raimi, Ted Raimi, Sarah Michelle Gellar and more, a sixty minute documentary divided into multiple sections and an Under the Skin featurette which sets out to give a medical explanation of the fear response in films. I like the cover, think it looks cool. I'll see when the UK release is but I may import it (handily just before my birthday).

Sarah Michelle Gellar - An excerpt from the Press Conference - DIFF 2004

Adnan Khan from TEN Movies: You're playing the lead in director Richard Kelly's next film, "Southland Tales," which is an unusual musical/comedy set in year 2008. Kelly did "Donnie Darko," a mind-bending genre-defying film that is a big hit with cult audiences. Given your success with big-budget genre fare like "Scream 2," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "Scooby Doo," and now "The Grudge," what made you accept that role and would you like to talk more about it?

Sarah Michelle Geller: Hollywood can get formulaic. Richard Kelly, as you know, is daring and risky. And I have always liked that. I wanted to be a part of the Kelly world. It's a very special film and unfortunately I cannot talk about my role in the film because Kelly has asked me not to! In fact I don't believe I would be able to describe it for you even if I tried because only he can truly explain his vision. It's very exciting though, he's passion for things. I end up getting emails from him around three in the morning and I have to reply saying "Kelly, I need to sleep!"

Press member: How do you feel about still being associated with the role of Buffy the Vampire Slayer?

Sarah: I treasure my time on the show. I am very proud of Buffy who has been a role model for women because she represents strength and courage. So if people still associate me with that particular role then I'm only too happy for it.

Press member: Buffy was a very demanding role "“ physically. Is that an aspect of that role you're glad to have left "“ the physical exertion?

Sarah: You know"¦I still work out for me, and I love it! Yes, the role was demanding physically but it was a necessity to be prepared.

Press member: The image of Arabs seems to be distorted in the West. What are you comments on that? And have you seen any Arab films here at the Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF)?

Sarah: No, unfortunately I have been able to see any of the Arab films playing here. But I think with DIFF there is a noble effort to changing minds, bridge cultures. I have tried doing that in "The Grudge," which is essentially Asian cinema remade in Hollywood but by the same Japanese director that made the original "Ju-on."

Press member: Could you tell us more about your upcoming projects. Perhaps, a sneak preview of the development on the sequel to "The Grudge"?

Sarah: I wish I could! In fact, I know very little about "The Grudge 2" and learn more about in the trades because journalists seem to know more than me!

The press conference ended with Sarah assuring us that she would love to come for the next Dubai film fest if she is invited again. She thinks Dubai is a wonderful, luxurious place and will treasure the few days she has spent here. Sarah wanted to emphasise that the people here are warm and extremely friendly and she cannot wait to get back home and tell everyone about it!
