I really like Scream 3. Much more than the 2nd one. It's probably one of my favorite ones, all things considered.
Scream 3 is by far the worst.
First of all, Ghostface spends the first half of the movie trying to locate Sydney. We see him repeatedly fail at it, then he somehow finds her anyway. So why waste so much time showing him trying and failing if we don't see the payoff?
And then Ghostface somehow knows Sydney has been having specific nightmares about her mother? How? Why?
The chase scene through the Woodsboro movie set makes absolutely no sense unless there are two killers, and there were supposed to be. Angelina was supposed to be revealed as Roman's accomplice but the studio changed it at the last minute. Ghostface would have to be able to teleport for the scene to work as it was portrayed on screen.
And then we have Gale checking Roman's pulse in a coffin in the basement. She declares him dead, then he shows up as the killer later. That's a really lazy way of throwing off suspicion and generating a cheap surprise. One would think after going through three separate serial killer sprees and dating a cop, Gale would know how to tell whether a dude was dead or not. The scene just makes her seem incompetent.
And the movie was very obviously written around Neve Campbell's limited availability. Unlike in Scream 4 or 5, she's still very much the main character in the movie but she spends most of it either off screen or in quickly shot scenes by herself.
Randy's cameo video tape was so forced. They lessened the impact of his death by copping out and forcing him into the movie anyway. Either stand by your choice to kill a fan favorite character or don't kill him at all; you can't have it both ways. And why doesn't Gale recognize Martha? It's established that she and Dewey lived together in Woodsboro, where Martha mentions she lives in the movie and still lives in Scream 5.
Didn't need the Jay and Silent Bob cameo either.
The movie isn't without its charms; Parker Posey as Jennifer is hilarious and Sydney comes across as a real badass in the final fight. But it's just a mess of a movie overall.
