Spoiler! Scream VI - Spoilers

No, they had to rewrite it, obviously.

No he's not. He's directed a feature before. That "trouble" argument is incredibly inaccurate too. Not that Williamson is a first time director, but TONS of great films have been helmed by first time directors; they just need to have a passion for the material. As a movie critic you should know the list of first time director successes more than me.

I said in a previous post he’d directed one movie, but has far more experience as a writer. The film he directed is hardly held up a classic. One movie doesn’t make you a proven director. If you disagree then fine, but there wasn’t anything unreasonable about what I said.

You did allude to it being a problem that he is unproven. It's not a problem. That's an antiquated viewpoint that a director has to pay their dues in order to work up the ladder.

I would also point out that Williamson has been on movie and television sets for 3 decades. He learned the ropes from Wes Craven. Who better to honor Wes than Williamson?

Have you heard some news since then?
Sidney & Gale will revert back to being the main characters & Sid 's kids will be involved in the plot.

awesome! hopefully dempsey comes back
Honestly, the Carpenters could die offscreen and I wouldn't be mad. I didn't love Samantha in either film (she was the weakest part for me in both films) and Tara was barely in 5 and very whiny in 6.

lol…”The Carpenters died on the way back to their home planet”

I think Sam’s problem is she’s just a really unlikable character, and Tara has been nothing but a big crybaby in 5 and a whiny child in 6. Their whole “related to a serial killer” thing is just straight bizarre and bad writing, like somehow Billy being a serial killer means that Sam will be too lol? Further, it’s weird that both movies end with them like embracing being related to a homicidal psychopath like it’s a good thing.

I just want a twist reveal that’s memorable or interesting. 5 was kinda neat/meta with the soft reboot thing, but I legitimately couldn’t tell you what in the world 6 ended with. Victim’s family members I think…? Or they were the family members of the previous killer (a direct repeat of Scream 2)…? Like give us an original twist! 4 was the last time the twists felt genuinely surprising/interesting!

It wasn't just Billy, his mother/Sam's grandmother was also a homicidal maniac.

As far as what to do with the Carpenters in this movie, wasn't it said in the last movie that they're estranged from their mother and their mother is in Europe? Seems like an easy way to write them out. Went to reconcile with their mom in Europe. One line can easily explain where they are and why the Meeks twins (if they're back) end up turning to Sid and Gale for help when Ghostface returns.

a direct repeat of Scream 2

It was exactly this; Scream 2's original script was supposed to have more than two killers (up to 5) but was re-written. And lo and behold Scream 6 have 5 ghostfaces (counting the two at the beginning who get killed).
Add to that the relative-revenge angle and the 'nods' to the first one, plus some effective set-pieces and its easy to see that this is a 'safe' reboot of Scream 2 except no legacy deaths and more ott kills.

And yeah, the 'embrace your inner psycho' message was weird in Scream 5 but outright bizarre in Scream 6. They need to find a new theme when/if they bring the Carpenter sisters back.

Now I hate the Casper Billy stuff, but because they introduced it in 5, I don't mind them paying it off in 6 by showing Sam has more of a killer instinct. Her being a more proactive more rounded character is one of the reasons I prefer 6 to 5.

As for Scream not doing anything that new? Well I think that's just the franchise as a whole. After the first 2 or 3 they have pretty much followed the same patten, just updated the meta stuff. Unless you go full blown supernatural or take Scream to space so they can use that famous Alien tagline, I don't know what more you can do with it? 6 was enough of a switch up because of the new setting etc.. Also some of kills were strong in that film.

I'm on the fence about this new film. Its the first Scream I won't be seeing in cinemas because I don't like the politics behind it (if it was a different company that might be different). At this point they've gone through 3 different creative teams, which doesn't bode well. I think someone else other than Williamson should be directing, but guess we will see on that one. Its too soon to bring Sidney back IMO. The character has run out of steam and could do with a break. I think they've run out of possibilities with Gale too. The issue with a super nostalgic sequel/reboot going back to basics is they've already done that. If Williamson has a fresh take then fair enough. Personally I do want a more modern Scream, or at least something a bit different for the franchise. I'm not one of these people who is desperate for them to recreate what they did in the 90s (pretty impossible anyway). This idea that any Scream as long it involves the original characters baffles me. Scream 5 and 6 were big hits.

Depending on how much of a reboot this is I would have no problem with them having Kirby as the lead.

But... that is one thing that is iconic about the SCREAM franchise. No other slasher horror franchise uses the same insular cast in every movie. And I think it helps that 3, 4 and 5 had such a big timeframe between films, because it makes it more believable that there was normalcy, and then wackos come out the woodwork to restart an iconic franchise. I also find it hilarious that there was a STAB franchise in the films that make it even more believable that these wackos keep coming back.

And at this point, it's pretty well established that there will be legacy cast in every film. Honestly, I wish Gale would get main character treatment. She deserves it after surviving 6 movies lol

They should do an alternate world Scream then we could have Matthew Lillard and Skeet Ulrich back.

I don’t want that personality though I’m guessing your cracking jokes? Lol
It wasn't just Billy, his mother/Sam's grandmother was also a homicidal maniac.

That made sense to me because she has a direct connection and a reason to be vengeful. She had a few screws loose, Syndney killed her son, she wanted revenge. Makes sense

Sam and Tara are all like “yeah, I’m related to a serial killer, and I’m tired of acting like I’m not 😏.” Then they use their cool serial killer end of movie superpowers to kill the villains, who have been so cartoonish in these last two movies that it may as well be an unofficial “The Mask” spinoff. Stu and Billy were unhinged in Scream, but most everybody else in the franchise felt like they were real people. These newest movies had villains that are like “HAHA YEAH IM THE BAD GUY 🫵🫵🫵🫵😂😂😂😂😂 HAHA CLOWN 🫵🫵🫵🫵😂😂😂😂 WE KILLED YOUR FRIENDS, EPIC LOL! 🫵🫵🫵🫵😂😂😂😂😂”

So Scott Foley & Matthew Lillard will be in the new Scream, what's your thoughts?

I'm not that thrilled. Its possible their planning the idea that Williamson was originally going to do for Scream 3 (when Lillard was originally going to return), though I don't know how that would fit in with the original writing plan. Its not be confirmed yet if their both still alive, as it could be a in a flashback or even as part of an AI plot which has been rumoured. I'm more interested in Foley returning, because there's much room for improvement with him. I don't see any reason to bring Stu back, but maybe they'll prove me wrong.

The premise of the film is Sidney facing the “ghosts” of her past, which pays homage to both the start of the franchise and the requel plot of Sam seeing the ghost of Billy Loomis (her father). So I’m not mad at it.

It’s been confirmed that David Arquette will also make an appearance, probably to both Sid and Gale.

It will be interesting to see Sid’s new life in Pine Grove. I’m wondering how they write Sam and Tara out of this film, since originally this was going to be the “finale” of the requel trilogy.

I’m glad that Chad and Mindy will be back, cause u do like both of those characters. I hope Chad has a limp, in homage to Dewey surviving multiple insane stabbings with nothing but a limp.

Kevin is directing it, and Neve signed off on the film after meeting with the writer and understanding the vision behind the film, so I’m sure it will be good. I’m hoping we get an 8th film out of the set up for this one.

It’s the only horror franchise I know that has a story arc with the same characters through 7 films, and the writers and directors of this franchise really do put so much effort into ensuring quality. There’s so many actors in this one that I hope the kill count is high. We were promised a higher kill count in 6 and I don’t think it really got there. Ghost face was on a train, and didn’t use the opportunity to create chaos by killing random red shirts, which was a fail in my eyes.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the dead characters returning and seeing what the crew has in store for us.

As long as Lillard and Foley aren't actually alive and they're just appearing in flashbacks/dreams/visions/hallucinations.

Lillard surviving the first movie remains one of the single stupidest ideas anyone in the history of humanity has ever expressed in words.

i agree and after all this time they have a lot of explaining to do about his whereabouts all these years and why he's waiting unti now to pop up. I don't know if I'm keen on this history of Scream idea, its a little too nostalgia for the sake of it. We'll see. I won't be rushing to this one.

If they're going to do a shock "someone was alive all along" reveal, the only possible character it could work for is Angelina Tyler from Scream 3.

She was supposed to be the second killer in the movie (which would have closed a lot of "how the hell is Roman in 2 places at once" plotholes) but that storyline got hacked in editing.

They could say they used movie special effects (like Roman did when Gale thought he was dead in the basement) to fake her death. Then she found someone that looked enough like her to kill and replace her at the morgue and has lived under an assumed identity sense then.

Recently read that Emma Roberts (Jill) is also on Scream VII. A trailer will be released on September, so good if it's true.

I head there using her voice as part of an IA plot. The opening has supposedly leaked too.
