Saw it and it was pretty okay. I think it was much better paced than the previous installment and the kills were better. I liked Sidney and her relationship with her daughter. Gail Weathers was much better utilized in this film and actually in character, acknowledging the effect Dewey's passing has had on her. Tatum was a pretty good final girl edition, showing some grit at the end there. I wasn't expecting the Meeks-Martins to be as prominent as they were, but being Gail's understudies was a neat way to get them involved.
The main weak point was the killer reveal but it wasn't half as bad as some are making out; this is almost 'the Ghostface killer cult' (which I was expecting) but the swerve being an obsessed super-fan of Sid who had soured on her had echoes of Jill Roberts motivation (still the OG killer imo, almost got away with it). I really didn't want it to be Stu so overall I was mostly relieved.
Plus I'm not seeing any stupid plot-hole stuff that littered the last one, like a secret maniac vengeance-fueled family or something. Also the final fight was a final girl vs. killer fight not a slasher-getting-out-slashered by psycho fight, makes a nice change from previously.
I'd put this in the middle of the pack, somewhere around the 5th installment, but nowhere near 1,2 or 4.
No, one of the killer's express motive was to make Tatum 'Sidney 2.0,' so killing all of Tatum's friends/boyfriend and giving her massive horrible trauma is part of that. There actually weren't many random kills in this one, certainly compared to other installments.
