I keep mentioning my various problems with S7, and one of it's biggest crimes was continuity. A few people asked what continuity glitches I meant. Now, I'm a bit dumb. I have the memory span you'd expect of a PS2 owner, and it's been a while since I've actually sat through it, but here's what I can think of off the top of my head. Feel free to correct any errors, in my defence I've just had half a bottle of bad wine.

*Character Continuity.
I can forgive minor plot continuity problems, but Buffy has always leaned on it's characters, and rightly so. It's characters were great. So why did they all turn into different people altogether in S7? Giles is not only positively adept at using the internet, he's also a bit of a bollocks. Not just in the old stern father figure, formerly known as Ripper sense, just in the general cold b*stard sense. Buffy turned into a cow. From the ranting, and the appalling treatment of her own best friends, and her threats to Wood, and her treatment of Faith, and her pigheaded unwillingness to take useful suggestions...she's a b!tch... anyway... Somewhere between LA and Sunnydale, presumably when they stopped off to change clothes and get Faith's hair done, Faith transformed from a working class rock chick Slayer to ...erm... Eliza Dushku doing an excellent impression of Fergie from the Black Eyed Peas. Seriously. Count how many times she says the word "Yo" in S7 Buffy. Now count how many times she ever used the word before. You should get a ratio in or around 1,500,000:0, or in laymans terms, going from 0 to a hundred Yo's per second (YP/s) in the space of a week. Xander makes a joke about the brutal death of his ex fiance. The worst character continuity was, without a doubt, Buffy getting kicked out of her own house by people who, like an episode ago, were all giving their own rants about how great Buffy was.

*The Hellmouth/ Ubervamps.
So... It's a sort of vortex, located beneath the sunken ruins of the church, right? So the first things out of it should be the same thing we saw the last twice the Hellmouth was opened, right? Nope. See, old Head-Squid has graciously given up his front seat to the UberVamps (Ubervamps?) so that they can build some visitor friendly stairs (STAIRS!) into hell, which has been remodelled since Buffy bungee jumped into it. Luckily, there's a complex ritual for opening the Seal to let the... oh hold on, we got bored of that too. From now on they pop up whenever we get bored of some of the Potentials, and since we saw how effective that scene in Release was, we've been dying to mess Buffy up some. See, the Ubervamps are so strong that they can't be staked or beaten without somebody with superpowers getting the crap kicked out of them. Until we realised that the show would end on a much more downbeat note if we just saw the Scoobies get massacred by unstoppable monsters. From now on, thanks to Anya's unnamed source, they can be staked. By anybody. But back to the Hellmouth. See, though we haven't mentioned it at all before, people have been picking up on the vibes and have decided to leave town in droves, and also VW Beetles. Luckily, nobody's left the Bronze, which is packed, and there's enough cops left to get away with kicking the crap out of Faith. Also luckily, said cops forget their grudge completely (Just like they forgot that the same girl used to be surrogate daughter to their boss, the Mayor) and make no attempt to follow up on the girls who relieved them of their service weapons, and kicked them senseless.

*The Slayer Line/ Potentials.
I'm honestly not sure Mutant Enemy even knows how this works anymore. Assuming that Faith is carrying the line, the First should have tried to kill her last. If she's instead a dead end, why did they bother trying to kill her at all? The Potentials being identifiable before they're called was something suggested by Kendra's bio, but since we know from the old prologue speech that every girl in the world could "potentially" be a Slayer, that means the First has quite a bit of work to do... that's about 2 billion girls it has to knife in the time it takes to set up a pre-credit teaser sequence. Y'know what the Potential idea screams to me? Midichlorians. And if that's not nerdy enough, I don't know what is.

*The Scythe/ The Guardians.
The Guardians have been looking out for the Slayer. They've been looking out for her so well that we've never seen or heard of them before, despite the fact that we've seen three Slayers in Sunnydale. One of them is dead, and the other two nearly killed each other. And one of those has died three times, while the other was hooked to an ECG for 8 months. If I were that woman's boss, I would have visited a recruitment agency long ago. Was she watching Judge Judy while Buffy was stomping around the graveyard above her...? She's been helping and protecting the Slayer so well, in fact, that she doesn't know the girls name.

As for the Scythe: First if all, it's a freaking axe. I loved it in Fray. It worked in Fray. I could believe that it had been lost for so long, because of the home address of the guy who gave it to her. In Buffy, it made no sense. It had never been mentioned, and no solid excuse was ever offered as to why they'd overlooked it. They never mentioned exactly how they joined the dots between "It's meant for Slayers" and "It'll mass produce Slayers"

There's more, but I'll check through this again when I'm sober to see if it makes sense...

Wow, thats all i can say lol!!!
This is going to surprise you Jill, but I actually agree with you, and this is coming from a guy who loves Season 7, and is fond of using terms like flawed masterpiece to describe it.

For me Season 7 suggested the possibility of undeniable greatness up until the end of Showtime, about half way through the season. After that the continuity guy you spoke of must have keeled over and died. It isn't the first time he's fallen asleep at the wheel, but this was something too obvious to excuse.

There's a possibility to argue some of the details you suggested like for instance the Hellmouth beast you spoke of may have been killed in The Zeppo, but the basic premise that Season 7 continuity sucked is hard to deny.

Yeah character continuity was practically non-existent in Empty Places, and the Scythe: people have mentioned the term Deux Ex Machina so often I hope I can finally spell it.

So basically, yeah I agree with you about the continuity thing. Nevertheless, I loved the first half, and there was stuff in the second so good, I can almost forgive the flaws.

Because I'm extremely tired and I'm lacking any kind of intelligence at the moments, I'll make my rant short and sweet.

1. Character Continuity:

Xander - I can see how the whole losing an eye thing could make him a bit angry against Buffy. So to me, not really character flaw, but more or less a pissed off construction worker.

Dawn - Ah, how did the writers ever figure this one out. I mean her sister killed herself to save her and the world. But yet she decides to kick her out of her own house (And there's a good argument that can be debated there, since it really isn't Dawn's house.)?

Giles - I understand him trying to kill Spike, because Spike could have posed a threat to the Scoobs. But like Dawn, he doesn't want her in the Summer's home. Though he is the closet thing to a father she's ever had (even though the existence of Hank, but that too is another debate). A big flaw though, is his immediate trust of Faith. As soon as she walks into the door he's all smiling and happy to see her, yet in Season 4, he despised her and feared that she would kill him.

Buffy - I've saw this coming for years. The superiority complex finally got to her, and it should, because she truly is better. Not in the sense that she's a better person, but that she has the power to protect the world and make decisions that concern it. Now I do hate her longwinded speeches. But she was the leader and she had to cut herself off. I think her not getting close to the potentials was a defense mechanism(sp?) because she knew most of them could die in the battle.

Willow - Finally we saw sweet little Willow again! Not Evil Willow, the type who uses magic to do any and everything. But her fear of magic? Ah, I don't think so.

2. The Hellmouth/Ubervamps

I would agree that the beast like octopus with multiple tentacles that the Master tried to raised could very well have been killed by the Scoobs in the Zeppo. And I would assume that the Hellmouth is extremely large. So therefore the possibilities are endless.

But the Ubervamps, that's different. It's so odd that Buffy, the super slayer, has trouble slaying one, but the newly activated Potentials and humans (Dawn, Xander, Anya, ANDREW, Wood and Giles) can easily take them out. That was a mistake on the writer's part.

3. The Slayer Line/Potentials

I think, as discussed previously, that Buffy coming back in Bargaining or Villains seriously messed up the line. I bet Joss has some grand scheme about how it works, but we just don't have that info yet (I heard the next edition of Fray should some it up nicely though).

Ohh, and by the way, I hate the calling of the Potentials. If this would have been possible (and even right for the world in the Buffyverse or the balance) wouldn't the Shadow men have done this? I think there is a reason why they didn't do it, because it's not safe!

4. The Scythe/Guardians

I like the idea of the scythe, but not the idea that it could magically give power to hundreds of girls! I think it was a weapon to be wielded by the Slayer to kill a pure demon and great threats, but it seems just like a plot device.

Now as for the Guardians, I actually have substantial proof to show why they weren't visible to the Slayers or the Watcher's Council or even the BtVS audience, because they weren't meant to be:

WOMAN
Forged there, it was put to use right here...to kill the last pure demon that walked upon the Earth. The rest were already driven under. And then there were men here, and then there were monks. And then there was a town, and now there was you. And the scythe remained hidden.

BUFFY
I don't understand. How is it possible that we didn't know any of this?

WOMAN
We hid, too. We had to until now. We're the last surprise.

BUFFY
Does this mean I can win?

WOMAN
That is really up to you. This is a powerful weapon. (hands the scythe back to Buffy)

BUFFY
Yeah.

WOMAN
But you already have weapons.

BUFFY
Oh.

WOMAN
Use it wisely and perhaps you can beat back the rising dark. One way or another, it can only mean an end is truly near.

This demonstrates that the Guardian(S) had to hide until the final battle.

I know all the talk about season 6 being all dark and depressing.. But I think season 7 is far more depressing. And I don't care that much about the baddies being a bit wrong or the not entirely logical thing about the potentials and the slayers.. (although that is annoying). But what I hate is that the characters are completely changed. I talk about this all the time too, and people say that they have reasons for beeing this way (like the ones Slayer, The mentioned). And I can see how Buffy became this way.. But I don't think she should have. It's terrible to see that it ends this way, with the four most important characters being all alone and not friends for real anymore. And they're all changed the last season, into different people that I don't really like anymore. I think this is the depressing part of Buffy..

I agree with you, Jill. I was gunna hit the little agree button, but it says i have to spread repuation around first. LoL. There were a lot of things I didn't pick up on in your post. I don't know if this is a glitch or not, but the seal is opened when someone bleeds on it. So, why didn't the first just start sending the bringers out to get people to bleed over it? Probably because then the show would have ended cuz everyone would be dead in one episode. I don't think they should have introduced a plot like the seal if they couldn't use it to what it really was.

Great points all....when I get my S7 DVD I'm going to have to rewatch the episodes and see what I pick up on! I haven't seen them in a while and I have the short-term memory of that fish from Nemo. 😀

The only bad continuity that I remember is that Buffy made the erroneous comment that the Slayer line would continue upon her death.

Other than that, I don't recall any. Please enlighten me. Or is this simply an opportunity to bash Season 7 and the Generalissma Summers attitude?

As you well know, because you've had, and I might add lost this arguement on other threads, it wasn't just Buffy that said that. It was also The First. You've been shown on the threads how this goes back to the explanation of Beljoxa's Eye, where it explains there was a disruption in the slayer line.

This is one of the few places in Season 7 there isn't a problem with continuity, and I would suggest it's only an effort by you to hijack this thread.

I'd also suggest, if you still want to debate it, you return to the thread where the issue is being debated. I mean it's true you are losing the arguement there, but what makes you think you'll have any more luck here?

Did you not read the thread before you replied? They just did.

Thought of another one, though in fairness this one sort of started in S6...

Sunnydale has a temperate climate. In the establishing shots of the town, we've seen it surrounded by greenery covered mountains. It has forests, it sometimes rains, the lawns don't burn, and although it was semi-miraculous, it snowed.

It has a dock, a lake and a railway.

Now look at the final shot of Sunnydale.

I'm not sure if that's a good example of a continuity flaw anyway.

My impression of California was there's parts of it where, depending on which direction you point your camera, that's all completely possible.

For example, I would suspect they drove a short distance outside of Los Angeles to get that shot.

Fair comment about the elastic city...

My beef wasn't quite that the Railway and lake have apparently fallen off the face of the earth long before Sunnydale fell into it, just that Sunnydale has had the most rapid case of Global warming ever... 😀

The establishing shot of Sunnydale (I think I'm thinking of Phases) shows Sunnydale clearly spread between green hills and mountains. So, for the final shot, the mountains would have had to have fallen in as well. I am aware that this one is just being nitpicky and has no real bearing on the plot. I guess I'm too sober today. 😀

Nerd4hire, I'm not trying to start a debate or am I hijacking jack sh*t, so please get off your high horse!

Now, other than the First and Buffy stating that the Slayer line still went through her, what other bad continuity in S7 are you talking about?

I think Jill Valentine was pretty clear is stating that the other bad continuity examples you are asking for are clearly listed in the first post of this thread.

And it's not only N4H who clearly sees what you are doing in this thread. Consider yourself enlightened 😀

I agree with you guys on the continuity issue, but it's really subtle stuff with me more than the big, glaring issues you guys have pointed out. The only real issues that I have seen that match what's been listed here are the inconsistent behavior of the First (it's both inconsistent with what we're shown in 'Amends' and also inconsistent from episode to episode) and the inconsistency that arises when Willow guests on ANGEL (she's all uber-witchy when, I believe, she was still all 'cowardly lion' over on Buffy).

The behavior of Giles and some of the other characters is questionable, but I don't think you can justifiably lump that behavior into the realm of continuity errors. As for Buffy's behavior, it's not a continuity error; it's a case of some of her more reckless/unstable character traits (which are present throughout the series and touched on in CwDP) coming to the fore in spades. With Giles acting uncharacteristically un-Giles (something that went unexplained, unfortunately), Buffy's forced to fend for herself in a way that she never had to before, and things get a mite hairy when she starts unconsciously behaving like a dictator. People should have called her on her behavior way before they actually did, but there was a lot going on and Buffy's behavior was like a slow-boiling pot; nobody really took notice of what was going on untiil the pot boiled over.

There are some minor glitches in terms of how the Ubervamps are portrayed, but it doesn't take much imagination to come up with ways to explain those glitches/inconsistencies away.

The only continuity errors I've been able to catch in Season 7 are from 'Never Leave Me' and 'Bring on the Night'.

- When Buffy calls the Council in NLM, they act like Giles is no longer working for them, when in fact they reinstated him way back in Season 5's Checkpoint. There's no reason for him to have ceased working for the Council upon his return to England; it's pretty clear that he's still employed when he shows up to confront DMW at the end of S6, so why would he suddenly be unemployed/MIA six months or so later? It makes very little sense from a storyline standpoint, and is therefore a continuity issue.

- The second major continuity error comes when Giles returns in 'Bring on the Night' and acts like he's hearing about Buffy's fight with the First for the first time. Since she and Giles were still on good terms when she fought the First for the first time, Buffy would have no reason to withhold the details of her encounter with the FE from Giles, so his apparent lack of knowledge about that fight and its location is out of place and therefore a continuity error. Had they chosen to actually make him an apparition of the FE, this wouldn't be an issue, but since they didn't go that route, it remains a glitch/error in the show's internal continuity.

Well argued. Some stuff I hadn't thought of.
Also there is a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense given the information they give you.

Like when the British potential girl (I forget her name) runs out of the Summer's house. Up until that point they lead you to believe she's completely on board with Buffy's policies. The next thing you know, she's running from the house against Buffy's orders, when given what we've been shown of her character we would expect her to feel safer with Buffy.

Giles takes the potentials into the desert alone. Up until that point we're told Bringers are looking to get them alone to kill them, and they're only safe with Buffy, or at the Summer's house.

Why is Amy so jealous of Willow, when she seems so powerful herself?

There's another thing that's kind of borderline continuity. It's all the stuff that seemed to require more explanation, but wasn't given it. The varying power of the Ubervamps is a good example, or the inconsistent suggestion of what it takes to open the seal. Then there's the scythe. How did they discover what exactly the scythe could do, and how to do it?

I think she just held a grudge at Willow for treating her badly for doing magic and then doing magic 10x worse and getting off easy
