Don't be afraid of it. They'll never touch their golden boy, newly ascended saint for popular acclamation...after all only an angel can be named 'fallen'.
I believe that Angel will return in all its splendor ..not It is also why we love him?
We love its ability to recover even when it is fallen (although now, these continuous fallings begin to be somewhat redundant and repetitive)

I love Angel but Buffy is my favorite character and Spike is second on my list and imo it's Buffy who is bearing (no pun intended) more of the fallout of what happened in 8. While I am enjoying the A&F comic I do feel Angel is being whitewashed a bit (partly courtesy of Faith's internal monologues where she makes excuses for him).

I don't believe either Angel or Spike is the father of Buffy's baby and I say this as a die-hard Spuffy. I'm pretty sure if Buffy really believed she was carrying the child of a vampire the decision to abort would have been a lot easier. There is no reason to assume that an entity conceived by a human and a vampire will have a soul.

The situations between Spuffy in 6 and Bangel in 8 are pretty much apples and oranges. The only reason I think Spuffy comes off "better" is that Buffy never deluded herself about what was happening between Spike and her, she never romanticized who Spike was (and is), it was what it was and she knew it: a dangerous, destructive (to both of them) relationship. And even though it was the catalyst for Spike to get his soul back we still can't absolve him for his actions before he had his soul and how much he hurt Buffy then.

The space frac was a textbook case of folie a dueux. Buffy couldn't face the reality of what Angel had done to her and so entered (and she was under the influence of the Glow) into Angel's fantasy world (and he himself has some extinuating circumstances re his decision and I do feel sympathy for him even though he made the wrong call to accept Whistler's bargain). But nothing good came of the coupling between Buffy and Angel in 8.

OTOH "Fallen Spike" sound so hysterical that Joss may go for it just as an excuse to use that title.

As for Buffy, she's so dear to his creator...she's not allowed to be really damaged.

I think she already is (YMMV, of course). And I have the impression that, eventually season 9 will be darker than season 8. So far, the story was becoming much darker every time a child appeared in Jossverse (Connor, Jasmine) .

Reddygirl, I don't think Angel is being whitewashed... I think Angel has been ruined in s8 in a story he doesn't belong to for no other purpose of a shock twist of events (the masked villain turns out to be...her former lover! Shock and surprise) and a mythical reunion B/A, with no consideration for five seasons of character development, plus AtF at least. SA repeatedly stated he had never seen AtS: Joss said to him "it is sufficient you watch BtVS s2-3". As to say Angel's story is irrelevant. So, no whitewashing, only a halting attempt to recover the character after a driven fallout.

As for B/A and B/S, please remember, all of you, that I don't support neither the first nor the second. The first because I think C/A is better (of course), and that Angel regresses every time the writers put the two of them together. Buffy was a catalyst in his story and evolution, but after that moment only disasters happened, because of him and TO him. Spending a century in Hell it is not a party. He endured tortures and sufferings, any sort of things. And he endured those things with a soul, punished for crimes he would have never committed if he had been 'in his right mind'. I don't think a love can survive a prove like that. Deeply in your heart there's the awareness that if this happened, it was because your lover put a sword in your gutt while your eyes are closed and you're kissing her. Please, try to understand that I don't absolve him and his crimes when he was soulless. I only try to explain that, for me, a love can't survive the suffering of a century in hell.

As for B/S, I think it was a destructive relationship, full of pain and despair. Nevertheless, it was a catalyst for Spike, and it is a good thing. However, I don't think a woman can have feelings for someone who attempted to rape her. Never. You can change for her, become a better man, but for her, you're always are the man who attempted to rape her. This is not my opinion. This is real world, real body and feelings of any woman.

Moscow Watcher (this time exactly you! 🙂, when I said Buffy is not allowed to be really damaged, because Joss loves his avatar, I meant as a character. She has always had and always will have a free pass. I didn't mean she has a free-suffering card, just she couldn't be destroyed as a character.

Back to the topic of s9: please try to remember what I said previously: "I hope Angel will stay away from this mess.". The less he's involved in Buffy's story, the better is. So I really don't want this child is Angel's. Far from me! I love him too much and I don't want for him another destruction at Buffy's service.

As for Spike being the father, I really hope it isn't the case, given the dark and drunken circumstances I mentioned before. Apart from that, this really is not my business. As far as Angel is out of this dangerous comic, I don't mind B/S or B/...

I only care about Angel.

However, I really miss A/C.

You know, season 6 is over. Whatever was between Buffy and Spike in season 6, it's not there and them anymore. Season 7 Spuffy has shown us a totally different spuffy, a beautiful loving respecting spuffy. And also season 9, it's only getting stronger. There's love and respect, more than ever. Don't be stuck in the Spuffy of season 6. Spuffy is about the journey, not about one or two things along the way. The fact that in season 6, they were destructive to each other, doesn't mean it stayed that way, things have changed since then.
Just wanted to say that.

Cordangel, I'm very sympathetic to your concerns about Angel being ruined because of 8 but I don't think that happened.

As for Buffy's forgiving Spike for the attempted rape, she did it because she understands it's something he would have never done if he had had his soul. That's the same reason she forgave Angel for what he did when he lost his soul, including killing Jenny then arranging her body to cause Giles the maximum amount of pain.

Still interpret it differently. They all evoked (more or less explicitly) the pregnancy as a consequence of the party in 9#01.

Evoke and more-or less are the keywords again. The way I see it the party is there exactly to 'evoke' suspicion and cause more trouble - in this case the entire abortion twist rests on Buffy's guilt about the party.

I don't believe they answered to all their interviews while thinking obstinately that they had to evoke the party while talking about the pregnancy for us to speculate about the wrong thing.

See above - the supposed premise of blackout sex is the basis for abortion story.

Sorry to come back to that again, since it seems we are interpreting it differently, but in the quote I posted from Chambliss, what I understand from it, is that Buffy getting pregnant was something they were building towards from the ... beginning of S9.

The first mention of Nikki Wood happened in issue 35 of S8. Then I saw her hinted at many times at many different interviews. And I repeat again - Nikki was pregnant 4.5 months before she found out about it - right before her Cruciamentum.

And Scott Allie said : "She got black-out drunk in #1, and it turns out there are significant consequences". If the 'significant consequences' aren't the pregnancy, it would make no sense.

And he never said explicitly that she got pregnant there - but as of today the 'significant consequences' are her decision to have an abortion .

Side note : I just read one of the Scott Allie interviews again, and : "Andrew is going to come back into focus pretty soon and have a significant role to play", he's maybe the father

Oh comon, Buffy is wearing two T-shirts with designs in #5 : one is a robot , the other wings of an angel. I am not saying anything - but seems like new incarnation of a Buffy-bot is in the works. And we saw Andrew working on a mechanical arm in #3.

I know. I said it before on another topic, but my way of seeing it :

1) 62 days passed during the Spike one-shot
2) Buffy worked for four months in that cofee shop

Which means that between 4 and 6 months passed between 8#39 an 8#40.

4 months +/- 1 week , she does not have to be precise about counting months.

It probably took time for Buffy to move on San Fransisco and for her to find a job (I would say one month), which brings me to at least 5 months since the Space-frake at this point. After that, between 8#40 and 9#01, she had to find a new place and new roomates, which probably took a while too. 6 months (at least) seems a good estimation to me

Lets just put it that all of the above could have took much less time and leave it at the 4.5 months still being a possibility. And there is the Slayer constitution to take into account too. If Joss wants it to be Angels baby - they will shrug off 4-5 months and not showing like they always do. Buffy already looks more rounded and endowed in S9 than she ever was in S8.

Huh ? What Chambliss said about "unrequited love" was based from Spike's POV of their relationship

LOL. No, Chambliss said exactly that 'unrequited love is more fun to write' - which means that is what he as a writer was told to write about/ and is writing about. There is no from whose PoV clause here . AC is writing unrequited love in this story and that's all he had to say.

The story itself contradicts the fact that his love for her is unrequited from Buffy's POV.

No it does not. She mocks and ignored Spike most of the arc, then rushes to him when she needs a dark place again - and even though she suspects they might have had sex ( without her even remembering), she never asks him 'was it with you' or 'how do you feel'? - but just requests his support with abortion decision - and that right at the moment when he is about to say something. No consideration for his feelings again - she plain picks up her use and abuse pattern with him and runs with it.

Buffy was ready to ask Spike to "run away" with her and her baby

Yup, because he is the 'support center' for now. With Giles gone and Willow absent , and Dawn /Xander all into themselves. Spike is once again the guy whose opinion, feelings or maybe existence of personal life are not important enough for her - but he is convenient to ask drop everything and go provide for her and somebody else baby. Truly, the more Whedon's characters change the more they stay the same

Look, according to Allie, we will know the identity of the father pretty soon, so we'll see at this moment. But if Angel really was the father, someone would let him know it and the rest of the season probably would include him in the story at some levels (especially since they said that the identity of the father would be a part of where the story goes). Except that Angel has his own series with Faith now, his own journey and issues, and Buffy's story will stayed focus on things which have nothing to do with him.

Willow is gone - and likely to England, but they made certain that she does not know about the pregnancy before she went. One channel of communication closed. I see no reason for them to let Angel know till the end of the season- and I see all the reasons for nobody telling him. More drama again. and yes, the two series are supposed to be two parts of a whole, not separate, even thou they are separate.

And I simply don’t believe they have the intention to connect Buffy’s and Angel’s stories this season. The spacefrak is probably the less popular thing about season 8, and like Icarium said, the staff tends to try to forget this part of the story.

The death of Jenny, Tara, Cordelia-Connor dalliance etc were probably the less popular things about their respective seasons - yet not only Joss went for these plots - they also were never reversed, forgotten or written off. In fact , these events became fundamentals to shape the seasons to come - exactly because this is Whedon's MO. He won't change it just because large part of the fandom hated it. And the staff tends to follow Joss plot. So far death of Giles has been cornerstone do A&F. I fully expect the Twilight story to come from under the rug it had been swept under pretty soon.

Anyway, I think we won't agree, so agree to disagree ? 😉 We'll get the answer very soon

We sure will.

We definitely won't agree, I don't understand your way of interpreting what's happening and your points don't convince me, so I'll left it at that. ;)
Hardly. The Smashed scene was violent, degrading and destructive. No question. But that was because it was fueled by self-hatred and despair. The sex Buffy and Angel had in S8 was incomparably destructive, but is destructive in an oblivious, unintentional way. It wasn't about pain like Smashed was.

Do I find the fact that Buffy and Angel had sex in the manner they did degrading? Never.

So, then, Buffy can start out by saying (symbolically, not necessarily verbally) "I hate myself, I feel all alone and unloved, I'm crushed down by the weight of leading a bunch of teenaged girls to their deaths, so I'm gonna go jump the bones of the guy who's responsible (remember, she had no idea of the Twilight/Angel switcheroo until after all of the grunting and straining were over) for the deaths of half my army, no telling how many soldiers, and hatched a plan to kill thousands of children with a bunch of demon dolls. Oh, wait, he's doffed his mask. IT'S MY BELOVED ANGEL! All is forgiven. Fade to black, Joss, cause this reunion is gonna be pure XXX Rated," then coming very close to destroying the entire universe, and that's somehow less degrading of the character and everything that she stands for than having sex with Spike in the basement of a crumbling building? Okay. Sorry that I brought it up. Completely lost track of what was really going on. Must be those pesky Spike colored glasses again.

I don't think an attempted rape is something can really change.

That's the problem: I think B/A and S/B can't really recover from the things I tried to put in evidence above. If the writers just wanted to be realistic. At least a little.

Attempted rape should be at least as easy to forget as the murder of one friend, the torture of another, and the terrorizing of several others.
