Seriously, how ridiculous is it no one financially helped Buffy?!

i always thought it was ridiculous that the Watcher's council paid the Watchers yet gave no financial aid to the Slayer.
But the Watcher's Council provided an alibi for which they could pay the watchers. Many of the slayers were under age. How would they be expected to pay them? The Watchers Council is an organization as such they have accounting, tax returns etc. They could not pay the Slayers by proper manners lest they have to worry about workman's comp, being sued for unhealthy working environment, etc. Furthermore what 'job' would they say the Slayers preformed?

They could not pay them off the books either, as it would have to function almost as a world bank to do that. Paying Slayers and Watchers in hard currency no matter where in the world they are located would mean the Council would have to have access to alot of different currencies. It would not be feasible as it would draw unwanted attention.

So yeah, it makes sense they never paid the slayers... ha.. sorry. Just random thought.

I wasn't suggesting they "pay" the slayers.

As I said, they paid the watchers. They should provide financial aid to the slayer (a different thing).

Probably most slayers die too soon to really worry about it
Willow could have at least magic'd up some cash and food every month or so.

Mr. Pole: the use of magic for personal gain is bad though

So is skinning men alive.

They should have taken advantage of Willow's careless magic use in s6. Especially concerning the ~real life~ problems of the season.

"So is skinning men alive." LMAO
This was after Buffy died which would have incurred burial and probate costs.

Obviously, Buffy's death was never reported. She was buried by the Scoobies in some isolated spot, most certainly NOT in any cemetery. They repaired and reprogrammed the Buffybot to impersonate her and keep up the illusion that she was still alive. Why? Well, there is the fact that Dawn didn't want to go into a foster home somewhere (by that time, Hank and his secretary/girlfriend were living somewhere in Europe, and probably no one knew how to contact him) plus, we saw what happened once the demon community found out that the Slayer who they were so afraid of was actually a plastic covered bundle of wire and transistors. Also, just possibly, Giles and the others kept Buffy's death a secret in order to protect Faith. As long as Buffy was fulfilling the job of Slayer, the Watchers' Council seemed fairly content to leave the real Slayer safely locked away in prison, where she couldn't cause any trouble. Without Buffy, however, they would want a new Slayer, and the only way to get one would be to kill Faith, thereby allowing a new, hopefully more controllable, Slayer to be Called and recruited.

Besides all that, and I'm sure that this was more a fortuitous result than a planned action on the Scoobies' part, if Buffy's death had been reported after Season 6, how would they have explained how she was suddenly alive again at the beginning of Season 7?

But she certainly was interred in a commercially-produced coffin and the headstone itself was also commercially produced. They might have stolen the coffin, but they would have had to order the headstone. The Buffybot only kept up the illusion that the Slayer was alive. It was never shown in her house or going to school.

Although her not being embalmed answers the question of how she could even come back to life and had blood in her body.

As for how long she was dead -- Spike says 147 days, which is nearly 5 months, but she says 3 months at another point.

Regardless -- Willow and Tara should have been paying rent and for food. The dorms were not free and they managed to pay for them. College students are either supported by their parents or they work to support themselves. And the argument that they were "too busy" -- where are they going to live and who is going to feed them when Buffy goes broke and loses the house?

As for paying the Slayers -- there is no law that says that you can't give money to someone every month unless you are their employer. Ever hear of PayPal? Direct deposit? A check in the mail? Call them "scholarships." Send it to the Watcher and have him give it to them. Hire them as freelance consultants. Lots of ways to do it.

I seriously doubt that the Watcher's Council is incorporated under British law, but even if they were, they would be a British company, so US law would not apply. They do not pay anyone in hard currency; almost no one does that in the Industrialized world. They pay them with a paycheck, which can be written in any currency. And I'm sure that they are more than competent to manage the accounts.

Commercially produced coffins are bought all the time by people who have no intention of using them for their primary purpose. We saw one on the show used as a prop at a fraternity house party at least once. As for the marker, once more, monuments of that sort are sold for things other than head markers on graves. The inscription could have been put on later by Xander. It's not that difficult to do. The letters are cut into the stone with a sand blaster (I have a friend who runs a monument company, so I know how it's done) or Willow and Tara could have inscribed it using magic. They also almost certainly placed some sort of ward around the actual grave site to keep it private.

As for the Buffybot, it was shown in the house several times in the first two episodes, which was as long as it lasted in Season 6. Once when Willow was repairing and reprogramming it after a nightly patrol, once when Dawn slept beside it, and once making a huge pile of sandwiches for Dawn to take on her first day of school.

The Scoobies definitely used the Buffybot, not just to help in the nightly patrols, but also to conceal the fact that Buffy, in the role of Dawn's guardian, not just the Slayer, to keep up the illusion that the real Buffy was still alive and healthy. There were several quite valid possible reasons for doing that, take your pick or contribute your own special theory, but, obviously, if Buffy's death had been made known, there would have been no way that, after 147 days, she suddenly popped up once more, alive and depressed.

As for Buffy's financial state, though it was never shown anywhere, it's fair to say that, at least while he was living here, Giles handled most of the financial problems. Once he left, he probably either simply about it, or purposely neglected to send Buffy money. Remember, he went back to England in order for Buffy to learn how to be self sufficient, which would have certainly included financial stability, if not complete security.

We don't actually know that Willow and Tara never contributed to the household expenses, or even helped clean up around the house. If they didn't, they definitely should have. I could see Willow not even thinking of such things, since I got the impression that, whenever she wasn't studying for classes, she was studying one spell book or another. The mundane things like food, utilities, and housecleaning wouldn't even have registered on her radar.

It's ironic, I think, that Giles left Buffy high and dry at the worst stage of her Slayer career in Season 6 in order to teach her how to be independent and self sufficient, when what he really should have taught her was that it's perfectly alright to admit that she really isn't all that self sufficient. It's permissible to ask for help when you really need it, and helping isn't the same thing as doing it for her. That's a lesson they both should have learned, and which the goings on in Season 7 clearly showed that neither one had learned.

OMG -- Costco sells them! I had no idea. In Louisiana, until last year or so, they could only be sold by licensed funeral directors. And Costco won't ship them here. Obviously California is not Louisiana.

"Could have been put on later by Xander . . . or inscribed by magic." Or not. It's all coming down to bad writing and plot holes and a cliff-hanger. The reality is that they simply avoided the issue, to leave themselves room for the next season.

You're right -- I'd forgotten about the sandwiches. Binge watching -- it all starts to flow together.

Why is it fair to say that Giles was handling Buffy's finances? Do we have any indication of that at all? Obviously her mother was doing it until she died, but I can't recall Giles ever even asking about bills. If anyone is to blame for Buffy's incompetence, it's momma. I'm not sure whether we're supposed to assume that she had mortgage insurance, or just not think about the issue of the house at all. As for medical bills eating up the life insurance . . . what was the California law on that in 2001? Buffy, as a dependent child, is not responsible for her parents' debts.

His leaving is, if anything, evidence that he doesn't have a clue and hasn't given it a thought. He is speaking solely about Buffy's emotional/psychological independence and self-reliance, not financial.

Given that there is never any indication that Willow and Tara do contribute financially -- I didn't say anything about cleaning up around the house; that won't pay the bills -- we cannot just assume that they did. And when the social worker comes, Buffy has the perfect opportunity to say, "That's Willow -- she rents a room from me." And doesn't. Earlier, when the issue first arises, either one of them could have said something about paying more in rent or taking on one of the utility bills -- someone could have said something about it -- but no one does.

Until this point, it's all been written from an adolescent perspective -- and an adolescent from an economically secure middle-class family. Everyone -- Giles included -- is an adolescent. The writers use Season 6 to force everyone to grow up.

That is one of the problems with it being a High School show suddenly trying to transition to the real world.
I always thought the real reason they resurrected Buffy was they've had enough of her responsibilities: Dawn, slaying, bills etc.

They wanted to live their own lives at least as before, Buffy carrying the main burden. Giles sure had enough, seeing his job finished and returning to England, not even bothering to check how Dawn will afford to maintain the house or pay for college and how the two competent members, Willow, (whom he constantly warned before not to abuse magic) and Spike (whom he distrusted) will manage the slaying.

I like many others also dont get it why the watchers are on the payroll and slayers are dirt poor.

Kendra doesn't even have another tee and has to travel with the luggage (i read somewhere tgat it's -20 celsius there, btw)

There is this episode when buffy bargains on giles' behalf with the council in checkpoint:

BUFFY
...
Mr. Giles will stay here as my official
watcher, reinstated at full salary.

month he was fired. I'll continue
my work, with the help of my friends...

Spike is the only one besides Giles who offers to help with money in doublemat palace when he freaks out about her career choice.

What I remember about that episode is that Buffy's friends are actually supportive of her choice and Spike is all 'this place will kill you'.
'Cause, y'know, he loved her.

He was right. Buffy should have opened a self-defense business. I don't know if you've ever worked fast food but it is slow death
had enough, seeing his job finished and returning to England, not even bothering to check how Dawn will afford to maintain the house

When Slayer Nikki Wood was killed, her Watcher took the responsibility of bringing up her son, Robin Wood; Giles, on the other hand, after Buffy's death left Sunnydale and the burden of worrying about Dawn and the Hellmouth. Later, he returned apparently only to give her a hug - because after seeing that things were starting getting complicated, he said to her she had to grow up, and left again.

Of course they were - they needed someone with an income to pay the bills.

Exactly. Nikki's watcher brought Robin up, trained him and probably sent him to college. Giles... i wish he'd be honest about not caring. Those miserable excuses of his are laughable, but i think it's also-self deception.

Look, Buffy has superpowers. She's poor because she either likes to suffer or because she is a raging idiot. Seriously. Willow and Tara are humans. They need to sleep, they need to work out, they need to practice magic to become powerful, their injuries do not heal instantly, they have school and they fight evil alongside Buffy. It's a full time job as far as I'm concerned, pretty dangerous one too by the way.

You know what's actually ridiculous? The idea that they should help Buffy out financially on the top of what they already do.

The thing about the money... Buffy is back, and her friends - mainly Willow - get upset that she isn't on her knees thanking them for the favor of having been brought back to life; even if she was in some hell dimension, they should have asked how she was, what torments she had been gone through, what they could do for her. Do they ask? No.

Instead, she is told that she is drowning in debt. The solution: Buffy needs to get a loan; when this doesn't work, the next step is obvious: the Slayer needs to get a job.

Buffy didn't tell her friends about being in Heaven because she didn't want to hurt their sensibilities; the Scoobies, on the other hand, didn't think for a minute of hiding from her the huge debt, while trying to get some money by themselves in order to not burden Buffy immediately after her resurrection.

Buffy, as a dependent child, is not responsible for her parents' debts.

By Season 5, Buffy was considered an adult, the guardian of her sister, and the owner of their home, responsible for all debts and expenses incurred by herself or her her sister, and the one who was expected to pay for all of the expenses and bills.

@gite63
I know. I don't care. Angel, with all the limitations of being a vampire, manages to swim in cash and he's nowhere near as powerful as Buffy. What are we even talking about here? Do you know why Buffy faces money problems in season 6? Because she is lame - she's the first poor superhero ever which is just so pathetic I struggle to find an appropriate, nifty simile. Congratulations Buffy, kill yourself.

You are being to harsh with Buffy!

Buffy isn't much a “professional” person, I mean, some people do manage to provide for themselves by creatively turning a hobby or liking - handicraft, cooking, brewing beer, a keen fashion sense, ice skiing, raising rabbits in the back yard, whatever – into something lucrative, for instance. But Buffy doesn't have the time or the heart for it, she has always been 100% Slayer.

Or she could rob banks.

Buffy has to work in Season 6 because of plot-contrivance. That's all there is to it. Giles gave her some cash but eventually she has to get off her ass and work like every other adult (because 'life is the Big Bad' kids!). It's Buffy's fault that she decides to descend into the soul-crushing arena of fast food.
I mean, she could choose to work at the Magic Box- that would make a lot of sense to me- but apparently Buffy would rather stink of burger grease than have to work for Anya.

And didn't Xander did that first in Season 4, (hotdogs on sticks and ice cream guy?) and I don't remember Buffy being overly sympathetic to his plight. She sorta complained as to why he was around their campus.

Work is just one of the things grown ups have to do.
I do think, that if Giles was still her Watcher and he was presumable getting paid by the council, then he should've sent her all of that money to her whilst he was busily bumming around England.

While the Scoobies could have been callous with Buffy when she returned, Giles was really a selfish bastard - his Slayer died, leaving a sister without a mother and father, and he packed his things and went back to England - he who didn't have anything: a family, a career, any meaningful relationship (as he himself said in the comics). Willow, Xander and Tara at least stayed and took care of Dawn and the monsters that abounded in the Hellmouth.

So how would you have handled it? Giles had to be written off of the show, how would you have written him off that made him seem less of a selfish bastard?

Yeah, Anthony wanted out, his fault...

He could be in trouble because of his Ripper times so he would have to be back in England to solve it. Or something to do with Eyghon... Buffy's death gets him thinking about his own soul - a propertie of Ehygon - so he decides to leave to deal with it. It is still a selfish motivation, but at least, a understable one. Or he is sick, or thinks he is sick, and will die soon, and leaves to spare the Scoobies of another death.

Lame, I know, but I'm not very creative.
