Yeah, Joyce owned the gallery because she set it up and presumably organised it.
So Buffy could've done that, or worked at the Magic Box but that wouldn't have been soul crushing enough really. Better to give her long hours, a silly hat and 'the meat smell' to grind her down some more.
Why? Because the whole 'life is the big bad' thing of Season 6 is actually pretty badly written and utterly contrived. Always has been.

Driving to a meeting I thought of all of the things she said to make me believe she simply ran the gallery.

When she divorced she said she got 'nothing' so, getting nothing from the divorce she still managed to move, buy a house, buy a store for the gallery and hire and pay for an employee? It doesn't seem plausible to me. When she spoke of the gallery it was most often in terms of we. We found this place, we are going to open it, we are running a special on african death masks that kill dumb americans.

We is what an employee and not an owner says (or at least from the SMBs I've worked with). It's more plausible that she found a GM position for a new art gallery and with her LA experience she took over operations. I just never got the sense she owned it.. but.. that's just me.

Besides which she sells antiquities - seems ore like a museum that support black market buyers who pay t have digs pillaged. How many Greek Amphorae does a gallery need?!
