Should she have been in the credits?

Yes. She should have been in the credits. She appeared in more episodes than oz and riley and they appeared in the credits. I know she wasn't a main character as such but she wasn't exactly a minor character either.

I always thought it was strange that Amber wasn't in the credits sooner than she was... She was a part of the gang starting mid-season 4, and it seemed a bit unfair not to have her in.

Maybe it's just because she wasn't in every episodes? She didn't appear in Doomed, The Replacement, No Place Like Home, Fool For Love, Into the Wood, Gone and Doublemeat Palace(Woah, that's a lot), while Oz and Riley appeared in every episodes they had credits on.

Were they? I honestly don't remember. But I know for sure that Angel, Anya and even Xander weren't in every episode they were credited for, so Tara shouldn't be any different. And if she had to be in more episodes she could've easily been shoved into a random scene and given a couple of token lines.

Yep. I checked. Oz and Riley were. :)
Might have had something to do with Joss wanting to put someone in the opening credits for the first time in the same episode they died. Read somewhere he'd been wanting to do that.

I think it's a bit cruel to finally put her in only to point out her death in the same episode.
Besides i wonder what would be the average pay for a main character at BtVS?

Yes, your right. He originally wanted to do that with jesse but the budget for the show restricted him from doing so.

Tara should have been made a series regular starting with season five. Once the fifth season started she was in most of the season and congruent with most of the plot-lines. It's a shame she was not added to the credits. Even after Riley left, it made no sense to not at least add her then. Why not even by the time season six rolled around? She had been with the show for two seasons now but still not made regular... WTF?! Makes me a little angry TBH.

*Blinks* I didn't even know credit placement mattered.

Personally, I haven't watched the intro in years.

It matters because of the recognition of their work put into the show and the pay she would have received for the work she did for the show as well.

Well, I know recognition matters, and I was aware that certain spots (first and last) mean more than others, but I had no idea pay and such were involved.

Talking about placements in the credits, i think james marsters replaced alyson hannigan as the third actor in the opening credits around season five or six...i can see why they did that now, spike is obviously more popular than willow but i think willow should have kept her original placing because she was in the show longer than spike and alyson put in a lot more effort to be in the show as much as she could. She featured in every single episode of buffy. Her and smg are the only actresses who managed to do so.

As has been said elsewhere, Alyson was *upgraded* - getting the 'and' position is more important than merely being third on the list. It's like 'co-star'.
I always wished she'd be a part of the opening credits. I considered her a main character, and she seemed to actually be the only NORMAL one in the group, but at least she gets a spot on a disc in season 6.

She was on the cover on the season 5 VHS set, but I feel she was like Andy Hallett on Angel on it for ages before getting in the credits, only she didn't stay in them 🙁

I think Amber wasn't interested or something. I don't know, maybe she didn't want to commit. But if she wanted to, yes, she should have been in the credits. But only if they could have given her a bigger part and deepen her and develop her, which I'm sure they would have if she was a regular. It's the chicken and the egg here.

I have this weird obsession with the opening credits. So although to other people it may not have been a big deal that Tara wasn't there, it certainly was to me! The opening credits always got me hyped up for an episode, and Amber Benson's absence really bugged me. Besides, she deserved the money for her excellent performances!

I don't know anything about actor's pay, etc. in relation to credits, but I thought she should have been in there for the sake of consistency. Riley was in there and Tara was on the show at least as long as he was (time-wise.) Was Oz in the credits? I can't remember.

Yes. He was.

And YES, she should have been. Tara, and Amber deserved it.
