Should the show have ended after "The Gift"?

Well obviously that's true, most people here can vouch for that. But I was just pointing out that as the Slayer, Willow's importance continued to grow tremendously. I think her and Buffy's friendship did as well, Buffy didn't seem to think there was any other option than welcoming her back from her turmoil in S6 with open arms...
 
I think that it would have been good if they ended it. It was sooo perfect!

But...........
I am glad they came back with more eppies, otherwise we would have missed out on some GOOD ones.
 
The episode was perfect i agree but their way too many questions left and you dont really want like a blake 7 series finale, it had to end positively, i mean if it had ended we'd all be thinking omg wilow, xander etc are all probably dead, who's going to protect the hell mouth etc, etc.

It's interesting that the Scoobies were more forgiving of Willow than Spike at the beginning of S7. Yes, Spike tried to rape Buffy. And her treatment of him was no better. Yet, Willow murdered two men, tried to end the world and more importantly, threatened to kill Dawn. Yet, she was immediately forgiven, whereas Spike wasn't.
 
I agree. It was wrong, but the reasoning there was that Spike was still considered an outsider. The rest of the group (aside, of course, from Buffy) had never welcomed him into the group. So there was alot of resentment there about him hurting one of their own, whereas with Willow, she was one of them from the very beginning, so they trusted her more immediately.

It's a very "I can say anything I want about my mother but if you have something to say, we're going to be fighting" kind of mentality. And it's very real-it's a mentality that many subscribe too which is probably why ME used it.

And it's very sad. Although, I think that Xander managed to rise above it.
 
I dont think they should have, because there was so much left unexplained and open like Xander & Anya, Willow & Tara, Buffy & Spike. I dont think all the characters had been fulfilled and think of all the things we would have missed, Tara's death, Evil Willow, Xander and Anya's wedding, the return of Riley, Buffy and Spike's relationship all sorts.
 
no way! I mean i loved season 6! season 7 was ok not bad but i loved season 6 what about eps like omtwf or scary willow!? :jumping40
 
Yeah, even though The Gift is one of my favourite episodes of all time, I don't think that it would have made a good series finale. I am glad that the show ended on an uplifting note rather than the death of the main character. Ending a series with killing off the main character never seems like a good idea to me. It just seems like an easy way to end the show. Plus if Buffy had ended with season five, that would mean no musical episode, and no dark Willow story arc, that would have sucked!
 
As endings go, The gift was a better one than Chosen. but i still dont think it should have ended there. i really enojoyed 6 and 7 and think the show wouldnt have been the same without them.
however i was kinda disappointed with the finale.
of course another alternative to end buffy (which is how my mum thought it should end) would be to end it like Normal again. would have been interesting.
7 years of buffy - but wait- it was all in your head!

That ending woulda just killed me!!! LOL-but I have to admit, I thought they would do it...but then, how would they explain Angel?
It would've made a great series finale if we didn't know what else was to come. If nobody knew that Willow was going to turn evil, everyone was going to sing, the slayer line was going to be altered forever, an Buffy would finally get her wish to be a normal person, then "The Gift" would've been excellent.

But I feel like because of these major issues and conflicts that developed over season six and seven, it was really important that the show continue past season five. Chosen is the ultimate series finale because everything was brought together, but you're left still wanting more. Not exactly a cliff hanger, but enough mystery to still speculate about the characters.
 
i think that the gift would of veeb better only because then Tara doesnt die and also i havent seen any season 6 or 7, except season 7 final 'the choosen' or whatever it is called and i didnt get it, it didnt make sense to me as willow has moved on from Tara, which i think was very quick and then Anya gets killied off and i was like 'Nooooo!' and she was extremly funny and *SPOILER* i have heard rumors of a 8th series of BTVS and im thinking its going to be so different without Anya and Tara, well i bet series 7 was different without Tara because i hear that she was killed off in series 6.
 
If there wasn't a season 6 or 7 then I would never have watched Buffy so I'm glad it didn't end after season 5!

Then again, Spuffy season 6 was pointless (Spuffy season 7 was ok), but there was some great plots in the last two seasons. Tabula Rasa and the whole evil Willow thing, plus I don't think I could imagine Buffy without Andrew.
 
Series 6 was doomed from the start imo, with Buffy's resurrection. Buffy should have just pushed Dawn off the tower, that'd have been the best finale ever!

I really didn't like S6 and 7 at all (mainly the way the ruined Xander), but I did like the ending with Sunnydale being destroyed and all the potentials becoming slayers. Maybe they could have mushed the two series' together, getting rid of all the bad parts and keeping the good ones like the Once more with Feeling.

Well I think Chosen was an appropriate season finale as it brought closure and if it had ended with "The Gift", I would've been extremely frustrated as I would have had many unanswered questions, like someone brought up earlier. IMO season 6 and 7 were still relevant, and I guess I was just happy to see more buffy!

Even though i like Season 6, it's not on the level of Seasons 2,3 and 5. And Season 7 in my opinion is just one big mess. So to answer the original question, i would have to say, yes, "The Gift" would've been a better ending to the series. Even though it was a tragic ending, it was fitting somewhat.

Now the only problem i have with my answer is that 5 seasons isn't really enough for me. The ultimate thing i wish they would've done was hold off on the whole dawn/key thing UNTIL Season 7. Meaning Season 5's plotlines should've been Spike and Buffy's sex, Willows going evil, Xander and Anya getting married, etc (basically Season 6's plotline with no Dawn) Then Season 6 should've had all the things they did in Season 7 (minus dawn, heck minus it all, i don't like S7), and then Season 7 should've been Season 5, inroducing dawn, Joyce dies, Glory, the key, Buffy's death, etc. and have the entire Season play out exactly the same. To me it seems like the writers wanted to go all out for Season 5, to make up for Season 4. But while making Season 5, they knew it wasn't going to be BTVS's last season so i don't know why they didn't think "If we go all out, how the hell would we be able to top ourselfs in the later seasons? Let's save this season for the last". Dawn should've been introduced in Season 7, and "The Gift" should've been in the series final episode, in Season 7.

I seriously think that S5 Finale was the "actual" finale, after this was just a drag, there were a lot of great episodes, but come on, they made willow evil(which isn't bad in the outcome but hearing it...) and "the first" evil

one thing that i love about the gift is the fact it's the 100th episode, that cool recap they did of every buffy episode and just the end

Chosen was just awful, there was no dramatic ending, like who didn't "know" Spike doesn't actually die, and Anya was the only somewhat sentimental thing, that none of the "scoobies" except Xander for one line failed to consider

One thing I liked about Angel, they kept it short but good

For buffy, we want more, but lose quality and ideas, and we get a great Season finale, fit for a real series finale, and a mediocre series fianle that makes you feel sad for the fact that not only is this thee last episodse ever! But that it could've been So much better

But whatever, what's over is over 🙁
 
Although I liked the final episode I would have liked them to do something a little more emotional with it.

I felt satisfied about the ending and I felt it gave closure and stuff but I didn't shed a tear over it and I think if it had made me shed a tear or two it would have left a stronger impression in my mind.

For the most part though it was a good ending.
 
I feel that the Season Five finale was a lot better than Season Seven's, and it would have benefitted the characters with some closure. For a start, Willow has just got Tara back, and wouldn't have to see her get shot, Spike has proved himself good to Buffy and you wouldn't have to watch things get ugly between them after such a beautiful speech:
"I know that I'm a monster....but you treat me like a man."
Plus Buffy's death would be a very emotional ending, and although it would frustrate the viewers, it's better than watching everything go wrong in Season Six after such a good season.
 
No, but it is not because I liked Season 6 or 7 better, it is because I didn't like Buffy being killed and the concept of Dawn. Personally I don't like major characters dead in a series finale. So Season 7 finale was a more suitable end to the series (of course I would like to see an Angel/Buffy or Willow/Xander or Drusilla/Spike ending but...anyways...). So the show should have ended without 1)Buffy dying and coming back from the dead, 2)Spuffy (the side effect of coming back from the dead :redwink: ), 3)potentials (if it was only one potential that'd be OK but there was too much of them and soon I really lost the focus along with the track of it), 4)Angel coming back and leaving again (what was the aim of it? I mean either he should have stayed or told Buffy about Nina or Cordelia or any other female that he wants to be not-happy with 😀 ), 5)Dawn, 6)Anya in or out of the game (she should have chosen her place and have stayed stick to it), 7) Andrew staying alive (he should have died to pay for what he did, I mean the other two had paid and he didn't and became a comic relief? Come on... His crime was serious)
