Should the show have ended after "The Gift"?

Ah, but that is merely your opinion, and not an actual fact. I think there are lots of people out there who found Season Five to be a good one. Plus I think the ending was good, because why should the good guys live EVERY time? Buffy's death was heroic, and personally, it's boring when the ending is predictable.
And also, one potential would kind of mean the mass hysteria in Caleb's vineyard wouldn't happen, plus the continual deaths of girls, which is to me what made Season Seven so dramatic.
 
No, if you read what I said, you'll find I said that having the good guys live every time is predictable. There is so much that has been done on TV that hardly anything is unpredictable anymore.
But Buffy's death to me proved that the show isn't all 'lalala' all the time, and Season Five is a season which deals with a lot more hardship than previous ones. I felt this season was a lot more realistic and maybe people could relate to it.

So Season 7 finale was a more suitable end to the series (of course I would like to see an Angel/Buffy or Willow/Xander or Drusilla/Spike ending but...anyways...). I agree with you for the most part. I'm not a huge fan of season 6 or 7, the only reason I put up with it is because Spike grows more in those two seasons than any other. I don't believe Andrew should have died...I loved Andrew of course (nerds turn me on 😉 ) but I think they needed him post-chosen. He played a big part in an ep of Angel and he was the one that let them all know about Buffy. Don't get me wrong, they could've done without Andrew on Angel, but it was nice to see him again and he handed out some information that I had been dying for since the last ep of Buffy. But other than that, I completly agree with you (especially about those damned potentials).
 
i most definitly think the show should NOT have ended after the gift...the end of season 6 was some of my favorite episodes of buffy ever....evil willow was amazing
 
I think the show should have ended like in The Gift, but after season 7, not 5. I don't care people think seasons 6 and 7 are bad, I want them (but I think they're great!) coz they're still Buffy, and I want as many seasons as I can get.
 
When you look back at the season finales, with the exception maybe of Restless, Joss always seems to finish with a neatly tied up final episode, so in essense the show could have finished well at the end of any season. The gift was an incredible finale, it would have made an incredible end to a wonderful show, but why cut buffy's life span so short when there was two fabulous seasons to follow. I'm happy that the show carried on after the Gift, a five year run would have seemed like a bit of an anticlimax for me

Good points..the gift to me was one of the best buffy finales..and of all the shows I've watched that was one of the best finale's period...season 6..wasn't 2 bad..I wasn't a huge fan of season 5..but I did enjoy how spike grew as a person..and him getting his soul..I'm just happy for the last 2 seasons.
 
Would you have been content?

Joss said (blah I can't remember which set of DVDs) that they were intending season five to be the last season. Pretending to have not watched season six and seven, would you have been happy with how it ended?
 
I thought that the finale of season 5 was amazing....in fact it was one of my favorite season finales (other than season 2).

I would have been satisfied if it ended there....although that's not to say that I didn't like seasons 6 and 7 because I really liked them. I just think that Buffy giving her life (her "gift") to save Dawn and the world would have been a good ending.
 
If i had not known any differently then i probably would have been happy to have had Buffy end with season five. If that is how i believed Joss had wanted to end the show then that would be good enough for me, i reckon.

However, knowing what i know now and having enjoyed two more excellent seasons (give or take the odd dud episode, here and there) i'm glad it went to season seven.
 
I wouldn't been happy with Buffy ending, although I would have been happy with the actual ending. In my opinion, Glory still remains Buffy's toughest opponent to be shown and I loved the speech to Dawn in the last few minutes.

My only complaints: it didn't end happily as all her friends were miserable, Glory was only defeated because of a few last-minute ideas (they had no build up) and the reason the show came to and end was because of a girl who had only been in the show for two seaons.

Actually, I'm not sure if I would have been happy...

I think he said it in the Season 7 DVD commentary for Chosen (But I could be wrong) I also remember him saying he was going to have Sunnydale being destroyrd (As in Chosen) in The gift if it was the Finale! And That Anya was ment to die in that episode aswell.
 
I don't think I would've been happy if the S5 finale was to have been the last. I mean, having Buffy die just doesn't seem a creative way to end the show. We all know Joss would have made it end better, as seen in Chosen. 🙂 Sure, this episode was great, but it just doesn't seem like a finale.
 
I think that it wouldv'e been a GREAT ending, but I wouldn't want it to have ended then. I think it wouldv'e been a better ending than Chosen, but I just wouldn't want to have missed out on the Spuffy fling and the depression and just everything that they face in Season 6 because it just goes to show that real life isn't light and fluffy, it can be dark and passionate and wild and painful. Without that season Buffy wouldn't be as good. The seventh season even though it's my least favourite season all together, it has some of my favourite moments. Like the speech Spike gives to Buffy in 'Touched' and when Buffy find out Spike got his soul back in 'Beneath You' (hehe yeah all Spuffy moments😛) . All of that, so yeah The Gift would've been a great series finale (in my opinion because it gives closure and Chosen doesn't) but I think it was for the better that it didn't end then.

I think it should have ended after "The Gift". The season five finale was so amazing, to me, it just couldn't be topped.
 
The Gift maybe would have gave a better series finale but they should have still included season 6 atleast.

You seriously have to think about what season 6 was...it was about the show growing up.

Dawn finally understanding her place, Life Was The Big Bad of season 6! Buffy coming back to life, after being ripped from a place of eternal peace. Season 6 was showing how to deal with life, how to grow up and move on to the maturity. The episodes dealt with more mature matters.

Like the attempted rape In Seeing Red...Willow actually killing a human, it's just so amazing I think. Season 6 was about life and growing up and it was needed for the series. Big Bad Willow was essential in my books and so was Once More, With Feeling.

Season 7 didn't have that much of a great storyline but the series definitely needed season 6.
 
I don't buy this season 6 & 7 hate. I personally think the sixth has the most powerful message -- Life is the Big Bad -- and obviously being a fantasy TV show it magnifies life issues and exaggerates them somewhat to make them interesting (and understandably difficult for the characters who have faced much worse). As for number seven, I thought it was a thoroughly well done series and a great cap to the show. Many people complained how different it was by the time the last year came to how it started, but realistically the show needed to develop and grow with the characters, realistically the locations, relationships, characters and situaitons needed to change. And I think this was handled well.

Personally I think as a stand-alone episode and as a cap for the show SO FAR, "The Gift" is phenomenal, and better than "Chosen". Also I think Chris Beck's theme for Buffy's gift (her sacrifice) that he hints at and finally uses at the end is some of the most moving and beautiful music to grace muti-media. And that's saying something - I have heard and studied a LOT of music.

But after everything that happened after Buff died, "Chosen" was the way to end the series as a whole.
