Should there have been more clues regarding Jenny?

Does anyone think the show would have benefitted from having more clues about Jenny's true identity...being a Romani gypsy sent to watch Angel? I always felt that reveal was a bit lame because we'd never been given any "hint" or suspicion that she wasn't entirely good...seemed sort of pulled out of the writers' hat to add some extra last-minute drama...
 
Thats all it was! They needed to serve some drama and created this backstory, (where there was no backstory before)

am i wrong in saying i read or heard on commentary or something that originally Jenny was not a gyspy, but they added in the story as they were going along for one reason or another? so that would explain less clues before hand.

I could have written your post exactly! I feel that same way, it really did seem like the writer's decided at the last second to put a spin on things and while it wasn't a bad one I think it was executed a little poorly. It should have been a thought from the start, and if it were I'm surprised at how poorly it was done.

I remember Joss saying something about how he wanted to show the audience that Buffy was a serious show that was capable of killing off popular characters, or something along those lines. Also, he originally wanted Angelus to drink from her and then kill her; but he thought just snapping her neck would have more dramatic effect.

I agree. I kind of liked the surprise of the whole thing, yet it did seem rushed.
 
I think it felt rushed because it WAS rushed. They wanted:
- an explanation for Angel's curse, why true happiness would rid him of a soul, etc etc
- Giles to be betrayed in some way
- Angelus to have a real reason to kill someone we cared about...had he just randomly killed Jenny, that would have been sad, but it was especially tragic since she was in the process of giving him a soul back - this also added suspense when the disk got dropped, etc

I agree that it felt slightly unexplained and that it came out of nowhere, but I sort of like that twist. Especially since it showcased Giles' intense loyalty to Buffy above anyone else.
 
Am I the only one who never felt it was rushed at all?

Also, isn't her being a techno-pagan kind of the hint?
 
I didnt find it rushed, we didnt have a huge amount of Jenny time to find out much about her past anyway. I thought it all fit nicely.
 
I know quite a few really nice gypsies. I don't think they would betray anyone.
 
I absolutely love that Jenny had this back story BUT I wish it had been something we'd given clues to earlier.

I also think there was scope for Jenny and her people to play a role in Angel itself.
 
Same...I did like Jenny, I liked that backstory and twist...but I wish the writers had come up with that idea much sooner because the hints would have been great.

You guys are kidding, right? Seriously...her being a gypsy was part of the big reveal...and it was her gypsy heritage that was the REASON she'd been assigned to watch Angel...it's a simple matter of putting two and two together here.
 
No, clearly we weren't watching the same show. Do you even read what other people are saying? Or their points in their posts? To me it seems like you're just plain opinionated, and are here to cause trouble. You begin a thread asking "Should there have been more clues regarding Jenny?" I said no. I don't think there has to be. I didn't realise that when you were asking my opinion you didn't actually want to have a discussion about it, just go on and on about it instead.

I actually know the writer of the episode Passion and he said that the original kill scene of Jenny was too much for the audience so it was rewritten to actually be less dramatic. You're exactly right about the killing off popular characters thing, he said something about that too but I forget his exact words.
 
^ This is kinda random, doesn't really relate to the thread much...but while I was introducing my brother to Buffy, he developed a huge crush on Jenny. I didn't tell him she was going to die. When Angelus killed her, he was in complete shock and hadn't seen it coming...I think it broke his heart a little, actually...so yeah, I definitely think (no matter what the writers were trying to do with that scene) that is WAS appropriately dramatic. It's jarring.
