Should they have brought Buffy back?

I just started season 6 and finished episode 3 and found out Buffy was in a heaven dimension, not a hell dimension. This got me thinking, did the gang, especially Willow do the right thing in bring Buffy back? As much as I love Willow, I think this is probably the worst thing she has done. She acted extremely immature and selfish. I feel like the reason she never told Giles or Spike was because they would have told her how wrong she was. I get the feeling Willow is going to a very dark place this season, which admittedly I'll probably love because Willow is awesome and I like good villains, but still I feel like she was very wrong here. What do you all think?

Well, you've tracked onto a big part of S6. Buffy dealing with leaving heaven is a major arc of the entire season, and without giving anything away, Willow plays a big part as well.

Did Willow do the wrong thing? Yes and no. I think that she and the rest of the gang were torn up by grief, and without question they acted rashly (anything you have snakes coming out of your mouth, you know you've probably made a wrong turn somewhere), but I think they did it with the best of intentions, even Willow.

Spike, Giles and Dawn (and Angel, why wouldn't they mention him? I mean, Willow went to L.A....) all loved her, more than as a friend. They were all deeply attached to Buffy, and I think the prospect that Willow might fail is why they weren't told. To tell Spike or Angel that they were bringing Buffy back from the dead, and then to have it not work? That would be another wave of grief.

But, this is Buffy we're talking about, and a whole lot of people would be dead if Willow hadn't brought her back. All the lives she's gone on to save? I don't think that's wrong.

You should probably wait till you've finished the series or at least S6 to ask that question.

The series could have ended after Season 5 as far as Buffy's story is concerned. It was, in my opinion, the best "that's all, folks" point in the entire 7 televised years. Stopping Glory was arguably the single most important accomplishment of Buffy's career. Her mission was successful, her term of duty was concluded, and she had earned the only real "retirement" that a Slayer could ever hope for. It was the perfect blaze of glory (with or without the obvious double meaning) point to go out in.

Plus, and this is obviously off topic, but true nonetheless, it could have provided the perfect set up for the next season to premier "Faith, The Vampire Slayer," with Faith somehow being released from prison and taking up the mantle that was, actually, hers anyway since the death of Kendra, either there on the hellmouth or elsewhere.

Just wait.....

I am going to say that going from past experiences the gang could assume that she had gone to a Hell dimension. Therefore they would be right in trying to get her back. However, some more research would definitely be in order before attempting so drastic.

This is a very complicated topic.
For Buffy's sake, they should have left her alone. Well, she could have been in some kind of hell, but she wasn't. It was impossible to know that and it's understandable that they worried about Buffy.

Anyway, I think it was absolutely right to bring her back. Everyone always says how selfish Willow was and everything, but I actually think her decision wasn't selfish at all. There wasn't any Slayer anymore and the whole world depends on the Slayer. Faith was out of the picture at that time. The only other possibility was to kill Faith, so a new Slayer could be called. And that would have been... well, murder.
So, I think, all in all, it was the right decision. The world would have been lost without Buffy, so there was actually no other way.

I always felt the reason she didn´t tell them was more because she felt/feared they would (try to) stop her, atleast Spike and Giles, and not so much about protecting them. Her whole attitude towards Xander, and some extend Anya, when they started having doubts, always gave me that feeling.

I can't really comment on too much. As everyone says above, wait and see.. However, as far what you have found out.. about Buffy dying in Season Five, then being resurrected from the Heaven-like dimension..

I think Xander said it best when he made it simple.. He was worried about her, they pulled her out, so he is happy. How were they really to know?

However, I have always wanted to branch into the FanFic world of what happened between Season Five and Season Six.. the transition of those two seasons might be my favorite period of the show (late season 5 and early season 6)

As many above me have said, I can't really say too much without giving something away about the Season. But I will express my own opinion on it.

It's really a two-sided coin. On one side, the needs of many outweighed the needs of few. The world was still in peril, and with the only other Slayer near them 'out of commission', there basically was a 'need' to bring her back.

On the other hand though, Buffy was at peace in Heaven. She gave her life to save her friends, and the world, and in return, they ripped her out of the one place where she was at peace. The act itself, when viewed from this angle, was extremely selfish, and wasn't fair at all to Buffy.

I agree with Jodast they should have done some more research first. but for me personally im very glad they brought Buffy back... it meant two more good seasons! 🙂

I think that "BtVS" should have stayed dead, I always tell people to stop watching after season five because that way they get an overall better story and the best quality/episode ratio.

As far as non-meta goes, I don't mind Buffy's resurrection that much, what I do mind though is how she's treated by her so called friends after they bring her back. Buffy went through hell. Ridiculous amounts of pain and stress that drove her into a catatonic shock and then death, an actual death not to mention what happened after. She's barely holding it together in "After Life".

She needs help. It's obvious. She needs someone to talk to, she needs pharmacological treatment, she needs time, she needs peace, she needs to get off the hell mouth for as long as she needs to, maybe even forever. Get Faith or kill that useless joke of a Slayer already and bring a new girl, Buffy's done.

Meanwhile, those selfish bastards treat her like a ****ing robot. Spike just wants to **** her, Willow and Xander ignore her and Giles, the worst watcher ever basically tells her to grow up and leaves. You're paid to watch over her you son of a bitch, it's your job to take care of her you useless wanker. Dawn? Oh, forget it.

**** those people and not-people as well.

You know what, I really want Buffy to go dark one day, and without a bundled trite redemption arc, and give Scoobies a special kind of hell.

EVIL UU If Buffy goes dark it may not end well for her. I'm starting to think Willow is more powerful than her.

I completely disagree! To me season 6 is the best season of Buffy, I wouldn't have been such a big fan of the show if it had ended after season 5, it would've been a fun cool show, but season 6 & 7 give it such depth & uniqueness that make it one of the best TV shows ever.

You know it's not their fault, Buffy did her best to seem normal, they simply thought after the first few episodes that she was finally back to her old self and that it was time for her to go back to being Buffy, you can't blame them for that.

Well, yes and no. I mean, you're right, they didn't know that she was in heaven until OMWF, so you can't get mad at them for that (except for Giles. He does just leave. You're telling me that Buffy returns from the dead, a girl he's watched over for years and who has saved the world, and his own life, more times than I can count, and he just calls it a day and heads back to England? Harsh) I suppose.

But that being said, this wasn't their first merry-go-round with people come back from the dead. They'd seen that Buffy struggled with it after The Master drowned her, and that was only for a few moments. And what about Angel? He came back from being trapped in a hell dimension for a hundred years and was crazy and feral. If they truly thought that Buffy was in hell like Angel was, some more support wouldn't have hurt.

Well I think that plotline was born out of necessity because Tony wanted to leave, it wasn't really a creative decision, they did their best to find an excuse for Giles to go back to England. & for what it's worth Giles does admit later that it was wrong for him to leave ..

Exactly! After she came back the first time, it didn't take her long before she got over it, same thing for Angel, he was a bit shaky at first but he got back to normal in no time, & what did Buffy do for him anyway? She visited him a couple of times ..
However, I think that after they found out that she was in heaven, they all got wrapped up in their guilt and completely forgot that she needed support, which kinda sucks, but it didn't come from selfishness in my opinion.

There's nothing more powerful than The Slayer.

Well, I find them insufferably boring, derivative, nonsensical and ultimately pointless. I guess they must be too deep for me or something.

She went into a catatonic shock, died, spend a couple of months in the ground, was brought back, went into an another shock and didn't outright kill herself just because Dawn stopped her. Anybody who can't see that she might need help is a heartless idiot.

The Scoobies don't want to acknowledge that she needs help because that means they would have to take care of her. They want their Buffy back to solve their problems, take care of them, give their lives a meaning and pay their bills. They want a robot, they don't really care about how she feels or what she needs. They're just incredibly selfish.

And why should we care about meta reasons? That's not our problem. Giles is a worthless, pathetic dickhead not because he left but because of how he left.

EVIL UU nothing more powerful than a Slayer? Spike managed to kill two of them, Glory seemed more powerful most of the time, Willow raised her from the grave she could probably put Buffy back if she had to, the Master even killed her.. Besides Slayers have died countless times in battle, they are powerful, but probably not the most powerful things in the Slayerverse.

I suppose, but I find that when you're talking about a show, you can either do it from the perspective of the show itself, the outside of it (talking about the writing quality). It isn't really fair to do both at the same time. I mean, I suppose that when a character acts completely out of character, like "Buffy" in "The Girl in Question", you can chalk that up to lazy or bad writing, but normally I like to stick with if it happened, then it happened. And if we are just talking about writing, they could have done almost anything to make it better. I mean, put Giles in a coma. Have him leave on imminent Council business or people will die. Have him do anything. But to find out Buffy was in heaven and is clearly struggling being back, and then to just say "well, figure it out, see ya!" (or something to that effect) was beyond heartless.

And yes, Giles does admit later on that he messed up by leaving, fair point. But that being said, by S7 he's not the same Giles we knew from the early seasons. He changes a lot, and I'm not really convinced it was for the better. He goes behind Buffy's back a lot, and against her. Remember that whole deal with Spike in S7, when he tries to have him assassinated? That was unconscionable.

Well, again, yes and no. I remember it taking Angel quite a while for Buffy to bring him back. And let's be clear, without Buffy there is no way Angel comes back from that. She nurses him and cares for him when he can't even speak for more than one episode, and he goes through a long process where he's just destroyed mentally and emotionally. Buffy spends a ton of time with him (in scenes I really liked).

And it just seemed like Willow, Xander and the rest failed to comprehend the magnitude of it all. I thought they treated Angel returning from hell as a very big deal, but with Buffy, there was maybe one episode of them helping her re-acclimate and then they almost seem to get tired of her. They start harping on her almost immediately about getting a job, paying bills, going back to school. She died! I mean, she shouldn't have had to worry about any of that! I know that the harshness of real life was the over-arching theme of that season, but it seemed either very harsh or like a very big plot hole for no one to help with her with that stuff.

Xander did fail to comprehend it all, but that makes sense. Xander isn't stupid or anything, but he really doesn't understand the mystical realm and I think it's outside his element. Willow should have understood, but Willow, as much as I lover her, is not acting very smart this season. She is becoming arrogant and reckless due to her power. At one point she even threatened Giles, she tried to manipulate Tara and Buffy's memories. Spike is being a jerk, but he is a soulless demon so what do you expect? Dawn is the one who handled it the best. When Buffy comes back she makes the others back off and give her some space.
