I am in chat chatting with Nix about sleep and i am saying that i need to have a decent nights sleep to be able to function properly.

So it got me thinking how much sleep do you need each night to feel able to function in the morning? Can you cope on little amounts of sleep?

I can actually function no problem on about 3-4 hours. I blame it on staying up until 4am watching WWE pay-per-views when I was in high school, and then having to get up for school at 7am.

However, saying that, I LOVE to sleep in, to just lie their in my bed and doze and revel in the knowledge that I could lie there all day if I wanted. It's not unheard of for me to stay in bed until well after 1pm. I won't be sleeping, I usually wake about 9am, but I'll still just lie there because I love it.

I'm an insomniac, so I rarely sleep more than 3 or 4 hours a night, and even then, I'm supposed to use a mask and breathing machine. (So, I watch a lot of TV and movies on my laptop while the rest of the family sleeps)

When I'm on a high (I'm Bipolar) I function on little sleep and have to force myself to go to bed at a reasonable time. Generally I need about 8/9hours of sleep a night for me to function and the way in which I am woken up helps my mood too lol. If my daughter is all in my face get up mommy I'm like eeerrrrr can't move but if she gives me space to wake I'm like all yer I can get up now lol. Ahh the joys of children haha.

I can go on 2-4 hours of sleep and be very awake and hyper, but I hate leaving my bed. Once I am out of my bed I am good though. On the other hand I could get 13 hours of sleep and still be tired.
I like to wake up in the middle of the night though then go back to bed to make it feel like I have a lot of time to sleep before I have to go to school. But thats just me. 😀

This is weird. Usually when I sleep less, I'm less tired. I can sleep 3 hours and not be sleepy the morning after. Vise versa. I also like getting up early ever since I got used it while getting up at 4:30 AM to get in time for (fashion) school. So I don't get scared anymore to sleep less. I'll be find with 3 hours.

I usually don't sleep more than 5 or 6 hours max, even on weekends. Can't remember the last time I slept 8 hours.

As long as I get a full REM cycle (about 4 hours) I'm OK.

Oh man. If I get less than 10 or sometimes even 12 hours a night, Im miserable. I get headaches and Im cranky and everything.

I can't really get by on any less than six... and the optimum for me is nine to ten.

Also, as most people in regular contact with me know (and tease me with), my sleeping hours are in the most random of times... no regular cycle to speak of, one week I may get up at 4 AM, the next on 5 PM.

This is so me in the summer.
I cannot function with little amount of sleep. I think I need at least 6-8 hours of good sleep so i can function properly.😛

The more I sleep, the more tired and irritated I am the next day. If I have a headache, I'll try to get an early night, so that I can get some 'real' sleep. But when I wake up the next day, my headache might be gone, but I'll be tired and moody all day, and I'll usually have to go for a nap at some point.

Usually, my sleep schedule is about 6 hours. Since I can't work right now, I'll go to bed at about 3am and wake up a 9am. I most definitely won't get out of bed at 9am, lol, but I'll be awake.

I get about 5-6 hours a night, and I can get by on that as long as I have coffee in the morning. I don't function well until like 10 AM though. Which sucks for me, because I have a morning class I actually have to pay attention in...bleh.

I can manage on maybe 6-7 hours on weekdays, but then I need to make up for it a bit at the weekend, if I get less than that I'll end up having to have an extra sleep during the day at some point. I'm quite jealous of people who can manage on small amounts of sleep, I'd like to be able to do that more myself, but then I do quite enjoy it when I get a nice long sleep every now and then, as I wake up really refreshed as if I'm seeing the world in a completely new light, which is a good feeling 🙂

Man, I need a good 6-8 hours of sleep to function at my best. I can get by on 5 but I'll usually have a headache...also if I get more than 8 hours I am really lethargic.

too little and i cant function, too much and i cant function.

i'm better with little actually... i think.

i generally don't function which ever way you slice it.

awwwwww, way to get me worrying about your sleep yet again
I always adjust, but my minimum to function is 3 hours. During exams periods, I sleep between 4 and 5 hours (or sometimes 3). During normal school weeks, I sleep between 4 and 6 hours.
At those times, the wake up is extremelly hard, but a good shower and I'm ready...to walk to the tram and then fall semi-asleep until I arrive at school (once I totally fell asleep and woke up and had missed my stop).

To compensate, the weekends I sleep...pfou, a lot. Between 10 and 12 hours.

I use to be able to survive a sleepless night but I can't do that anymore. Last time I had a sleepless night, it was at school, because we worked in studio from 6pm to 6am. When I got back home, I immediately fell asleep and woke up at 10pm (and decided "Oh, it's late, so why bother?I'm going to sleep till tomorrow morning").

The truth is, I'm exhausted with my school rythm. But there is a bright side to everything: when I go to bed, I fall asleep impossibly fast and I sleep extremelly well, like a baby.

(And I realized that the more I sleep, the more tired I am because the more I want to sleep even more, know what I mean?)

Insomniac....so i'm good with 2-4 hrs....and usually i wake up every 45 min/hr which sucks but its automatic unless i'm drunk or something

I'll do that. Sometimes, I'll wake up every hour or every few hours.
I can always go on about 4 hours. But if I'm in a depressed state (bipolar), I will sleep just to escape life. So when that happens, it's usually nine or ten hours a night if my parents let me.

If I read your post right, me is bipolar too :)
I can function on very little sleep... but my ideal amount is about 10 hours. Unfortuanely, I don't really sleep 10 hours ever. My sleep cycle changes... currently, I go to sleep when the sun comes up. But really other than that, I don't have a set cycle right now. Like today I went to sleep at like 2 when I got home and woke up at 10. Yesterday I went to sleep at 6 and got up at 4. So other than, I sleep in the "day" or "morning"... I have no real cycle.

Youse lot are all crazy! Then again, I do work really long hours in a high pressure, difficult job, and also play a lot of sport, so I guess I need more sleep to get through my long days!

I can definitely only function with 7 hours sleep, although I prefer 8-9 hours.

If I'm starting work at 8am and finishing at 7pm then I need 8, but if I have a couple of hours of football training after work then I definitely need the 9 hours!

I really don't know how all you people can function with only 3 or 4 hours, I think I'd end up having a nervous breakdown. I get cranky and my concentration is definitely at the low end of the scale. I find it so much easier to find motivation after a good nights sleep, and my sales skills are definitely at their best!

absolute agreed on the last paragraph... I'd be a total nervous wreck after a week of 4 hours sleep per day.
