Smoking ban in prisons

That's not actually how it works. If I smell distant car fumes it doesn't mean I eventually going to be harmed from any kind of carsinogens that are in the air. Concentration matters in everything we inhale- the air is full of toxins in general but they're in such small doses as not to matter.
That's how most things we inhale work- pollen counts come from this, drugs, anything you care to name.

And this is what were are talking about. If the ban goes through there will be no 'going outside for a cigarette' because it will be banned there as well. If they ban it in one open space they will eventually ban it in another, and then another, with some sort of health justification. It will be 'go home and smoke your poison', I don't like smoking but I do want a free society thanks.
It's actually entirely different. You cannot smoke in a beer garden here because that's for everyone, however you may take a break from your food/drinks and go outside into a smoking area and then go back inside or into the patio to enjoy your food/drinks. There is no drinking within the establishment, typically the smoking area is on the sidewalk away from doors or in a back alley.

I have absolutely no problem with people enjoying their cigarettes. In fact I'd like to see most/all drugs legalised and controlled sensibly. However when you're smoking causes problems for others then it's you that has to adjust. It should be easy enough to set up dedicated smoking areas away from others who don't wish to inhale second hand smoke are located.

Saying that it's outside so you should be able to do what you like is a bit misleading. I can't go into a beer garden with a megaphone and start shouting in people's ears because the noise effects them. Same for the smoke I feel.

Ah that lovely debate that brings out the best and worst in people. It used to be said that to avoid disagreements and arguments at the dinner table you should never mention politics or religion. Well now we should include the smoking issue.
What do I think? Don't think of smoking bans, think of smoking control. I smoke but I will not smoke around other people who don't want me to smoke near them. To say smoking outside is okay is dumb as it depends which way and how strong the wind is and how many people are smoking there. As far as I know there is no limit on the number of people who can smoke there at any time.
Smoking indoors is a big no-no, why? If a control is placed on the number of people smoking the extractor fans would make it safer as they can change the air in a room so quickly. Where do the extractor fans go, outside to the roof usually, away from people.
Should smoking be allowed in prisons, could extractor fans be fitted? But they'll ban it because people might get ill or die. Odd isn't it that when it comes to the planet the politicians think in a completely different way.

I personally think it's ridiculous to complain about smoking when it's outdoors. Move away. And as a smoker myself, I do move away from non smoking crowds or workers because I understand how obnoxious it is to smoke near people who don't like it. Manners vs Ban, people should just be courteous about it rather than BANNING smoking OUTSIDE.

This would be the ideal. I have nothing against smokers that are courteous. I have friends that are smokers, I hang out in smoking places (bars), and when people are polite about it it's always fine (eg: most people will walk away from crowds to smoke a cig, or will ask if anyone is bothered by it). It's always that one jerk that ruins it for everyone else.

To use one example, you have that one jerk that comes to my barn and decides to light up a smoke right beside me and my horse, and 10 summer camp kids. Sure, it's not illegal to light up a smoke there and we were outside, but it sure is a jerk move considering were trying to run a safe business and show the right example in front of the kids. Again, this might not be related to the specific situations we were discussing (obviously that doesn't apply at a bar), but when it comes to smoking, there's a place to do it, and a way to do it. It's not as easy as just saying that people should be allowed to smoke anywhere as long as it's outside.

Newbie question, but why can't I edit certain posts?
What I mean to say is there is no drinking/eating within the smoking area which is what makes it different from a patio.

You get about 20 minutes to edit your post and afterwards it's locked in (unless the moderators don't like it). I assume the reason for this is to avoid people retracting statements and making other posts look out of place.

It can be annoying when you look back at a post and pick up on a typo and can't change it, I'm like "I do know how to spell and form a sentence really".

Second-hand smoke could be considered "assault" or "administering a noxious substance", both illegal. I live with three smokers and the wall of smoke that hits you as you walk into the house is nauseating. I think a lot of people who would otherwise go to pubs or clubs just don't bother because they know the smoke will get to them, so the smoking ban will lead to a different clientele which may or may not exceed the smoking clientele.

Over here we already have the ban on smoking in pubs, and the opposite occurred, so many people that used to go to pubs no longer went, which led to a lot of places shutting down. That ban came in around 10 years ago, and I'm now starting to see the ones that did shut down are starting to reopen, but those are usually reopening because a big chain have bought it. The ones that were struggling had to change to adapt to the less people that frequent it. The one place that was the real smokers pub, where it was a wall of smoke as you entered, has completely changed now.
