Hi guys

I was wondering what everyone's opinion on smoking was?
Do you like it, do you hate it, do you think it should get completely banned etc.

I also tried to add a poll about it, just o get some statistics

I don't smoke and I don't think that I ever will but a few of my friends do and so does my dad so I am around smoking a lot. I really can't stand it in my face so usually I leave if they are smoking.

I smoke socially or if I am anxious. Docs say it is ok coz it calms my nerves. Believe it or not, it helps my breathing, They prefer me to smoke then take benzos for anxiety. They didnt encourage me to start but they are definatly not encouraging me to stop!! LOL. I dont smoke indoors, but I do smoke in my car. I also will smoke away from others who are non smokers, I dont like to force my smoke on to them but if they appoach me while i have a cigarette in my hand then thats their own fault! I hate that so many places in OZ have banned smoking - like in pubs and stuff and it has limited my social life to an extent. I dont go out much anymore because I know I cant escape for a smoke (you have to go outside the pubs/clubs and often there is a line to get back in, plus you cant bring drinks out with you, only a few have beer gardens but they are so packed that you can lift your arm to light up!) and if I was to take benzos then they will mix badly with alcohol and take a while to work. Sorry Im ranting again! So yeah smoking bad for some - good for others. I suppose all in moderation 😛

That's exactly how I feel. I love smoking but don't like inflicting it on others.
I never smoked, never tried and have no intenbtion to try at all.
My boyfriend does smoke, but he's trying to quit this habit.

I don't smoke and I've never tried it. But in clubs and that I used to be exposed to a lot of second hand smoke- which is more harmful than if you were smoking yourself!
Now though neither my husband or my friends doesn't smoke and the last person to smoke in my family was my Grandmother so I'm not exposed to it much at all anymore which is good. I just hate the smell of it- bleurgh!

I don't smoke, but my dad did until I was 19, and let me tell you, my lungs are all guffed up. I have chronic bronchitis (kind of like asthma) and I regularly had bronchitis and pneumonia as a kid. It wasn't fun. After I moved out, things got better, but my lungs are still pretty torn up.

Honestly i dont smoke, i've tried to a few times but i couldn't do it too nasty although everyone in my family practically smokes plus my boyfriend so i get alot of that second hand stuff...

Second hand stinkiness is way more not-good when you're pregnant. Your boyfriend and the others don't smoke really near you do they? I know it can't be helped sometimes if you go out, but in your own home...make them go away! 🙂

Never smoked. Never will. Been exposed to second hand smoke though my family which has given me permanent breathing problems. I hate it, its an abhorrent/filthy habit.

I am really shocked how many of you are exposed to second hand smoke. In my eyes that's the worst kind (as you don't even do it yourself) and the unhealthiest as well (so I've heard)
I used to smoke when I was younger but luckily I gave it up after not to long. The reason for this was me realizing how much my lungs were suffering (which is especially bad when you love jogging).
These day I'm glad I don't smoke because of breathing problems I have anyway (something with my nose, no idea what the medical term is), so no need to make it even worse by smoking
Sometimes I think about restarting,e specially when I'm all stressed out. The problem is that when I don't smoke, I eat more sweets and other unhealthy stuff which makes me fat. I don't think that's too good either. So I'd have to pick the lesser of two evils, I just don't know what that is.

Sinus infection, maybe? That's the only nose-based breathing problem I can think of.

Okay, I wanted to rep you with this BB, but you were the last person I gave karma to so I'll just write it here:
no, I don't think that's it. My doctor thought that's what I have but later, when she sent me to a specialist, she realized she was wrong.
I just looked looked it up on wikipedia and I think it's called 'deviated septum'. Have you heard of that before?

I tried a few times when I was younger, but it wasn't really meant for me. I'm still surrounded with second-hand though, due to friends of mine. I don't really mind it really. It's pot-smoking that irks me, I guess. I absolutely detest it.

I've tried once when I was a teenager but found it disgusting. I used to be surrounded by smoke constantly as my best friends parents were both chain smokers and I was there more than I was at home. None of my family or friends smoke now though so all is good.

I smoke too much, but I won't stop, I don't want to, I know what the alternative is.
A combination of the drugs in the cigs stops my pins and needles, but I need a cig every 45 mins. The doctors gave me pain killers to stop the feeling the pins and needles gave me, then told me no more than 6 a day. That was after I told them I need 6 every two hours. So I smoke cigs, I know they'll kill me, but they may take years and what the doctors want me to take will end me in less than a month. And if I don't smoke, the constant pain would probably cause my brain to shut down.

I know what you mean. My friends dad (as mentioned above) broke his back when he was a teenager and smoking relieved the pain for him.
I've smoked on and off (mostly on) since I was 15 years old, and am now 24. I don't smoke any longer.

As far as everything else, let this speak for me: When asked in a resturaunt if I'd like to be seated in the smoking or nonsmoking section, my response is, "Doesn't matter (so long as I don't have to do it)."

well personally I think that smoking is a choice that shouldnt be taken away. Would cause WAY to many problems just look what happened when alcohol was banned.
I will occasionally smoke a cigarette socially at a bar whenever I go to sing. I dont think its right for a pregnant women to smoke because of what it does to the baby (causes low birth rate ect....) however, on a case by case basis some doctors will actually advise a pregannt women not to quit but to cut down because the withdrawal would actually be worse for the baby...which is even sadder they are addicted before they are born 🙁

Everyone knows the risks of smoking but its still their choice. Same goes for alcohol. That causes alot of damage, or taking huge amounts of medications...its all posion. But people should have the right to choose. However, I do think that people should also be able to choose not to be exposed to it. when I was younger people used to be able to smoke at the mall...I like that they cant any longer....I think that its nice to have places that are non-smoking, but I dont think its far that a smoker gets critiziced over and over for choosing to smoke...I mean heck they will go outside and the cold to light up and not raise a fuss let them make their own choice...they KNOW its not good for them....people shouldnt always have to tell them over and over and over....

I don't smoke but I've always been surrounded by it. As a kid I lived near my dad's side of the family and all of them chainsmoked constantly. I developed asthma in the fourth grade and it was even worse, after school I had to stay with my grandmother and my uncle and aunts (who sometimes lived there) would smoke and my grandma wouldn't even let me go outside if the smoke was giving me an attack (evil bitch). When I was 13 or so my asthma got a lot better and now it's virtually gone.

But now the parents of a lot of my friends smoke around me, and I'm exposed to it at work. Even though the hospital I valet at banned smoking my coworkers still smoke in the area and I have to drive cars that have smoke in them. One time I had to get in a car that four women just got out of - ALL of them had been smoking and it was so heavy with smoke I started choking!

*sigh*

And my friends smoke weed a lot, sometimes I even end up getting contact high. I think marijuana smoke is much more bearable than tobacco.
