Occasionally I guess. Or, almost every day but not that many cigarettes a day. I have always been surrounded by people who smoke, but I never really started smoking until about 1.5 year ago..

Be around more!!
I just recently quit smoking... it's actually 2 months today... and today I cracked... I got stressed out at work and had a cigarette... or atleast, tried. I couldn't even finish it... I was discusted...

It's funny how you can smoke for YEARS and not care... and then once you quit you notice the smell of those who do smoke and today I couldn't figure out why I had ever smoked before... I didn't even like it lol

Never started it,and don't intend to.

I've chewed on straws and ice cubes as substitutes.

Others in my family do fire up the death sticks(and I have to make periodic runs for one of them to get cigarettes).

Mmm many of my friends say that too. And I agree that after I quit (err tried) I do find it disgusting. Thing is, it doesn't make me want to smoke any less, and it doesn't really make me not smoke.. I do smoke less though, so that's good. Also, most of my friends kinda quit recently so, it's boring to go out and smoke alone (in Sweden you can't smoke at clubs/pubs/etc., I tend to forget it's not like that everywhere)..

I smoke and have for 26 years. Recently tried to quit (hiding from XDruX, she'll bite me! ::bbat:: ), but the medicine the doctor prescribed me gave me a horrible rash, so I had to quit taking it! That put me right back where I was. I don't hate it, but I recognize that it's bad for my health, so I do want to quit. Not so much that I don't need an aid of some sort, tho.

The hardest part about quitting for me was that I didn't see a negative side to it... Sure, you could die... But everyone dies... I could also die just by walking across the road... And I get second had smoke anyway, so why not be the cause of my own death, instead of someone else... Horrible mindset to have, but it made sense to me... It wasn't until I tried that one the other day when I realized that I hated it now lol... That's a negative enough for me!

Very very rarely do I smoke. I have never actually bought a packet of cigarettes. Mostly it would be if I was out in the pub and I would have a few pulls or maybe smoke one fag and that would be it. Last saturday night was the first time I had smoked in months and I probably won't again for another long while.

Exactly. I tell myself I'm going to die anyway, but then I also think, "why hasten the process?" Still, I don't have an incentive to quit and no argument is the ONE that tells me, "ok, this is IT. THIS is the reason I need to quit now."

I have never smoked..

I have, however, been exposed to a LOT of second-hand smoke. My parents didn't smoke, but my grandparents did. When I was a kid, I probably spent about half my home and indoors time at my grandparents' house. They only lived one block away, so why not? Everyone in that house smoked -- all the time for like 50 years. My grandfather's brother owned the house before my grandparents bought it, and I'm pretty sure they smoked. I KNOW my grandparents smoked day in and day out for the next 50 years. Now, my aunt lives there, and I know that she and at least one of her kids (an adult kid, although not when she started smoking) smokes. My grandma died last year and my aunt bought the house. My dad was in there doing some work for her (the floor tiles in the bathroom) and he said the tar that had built up *underneath* the floor tiles was disgusting. We're talking some serious smoking going on in this place. If you walk inside for 5 minutes, your clothes come away smelling like smoke. It's insane. My mom and I both have really bad reactions to smoke, too. Our eyes get all red and burny and watery and we have trouble breathing and get headaches. Over the years, it definitely cut down on my visiting time with my grandparents. That's sad. :-(

As much as I hate smoking, I think people should be allowed to do it. Actually, I think any recreational drug use should be legal as long as people don't plow their cars into others or exhibit other dangerous behaviors. I also think that businesses should be allowed to set their own policies. Patrons vote with their dollars. If the majority of patrons want to smoke in a certain business, then non-smokers should either deal with it or go elsewhere. Likewise, if the majority of patrons don't want smoke in certain business, then smokers should suck it up and go elsewhere. I don't see why we need laws that literally tell everyone how to breathe.

I do, however, think it should be banned in public facilities. Patrons have a choice. The folks going to the DMV to get their state licenses or going to the post office or the social security office or going to the courthouse to get their marriage licenses can't really pick an alternative location for those things. In such cases, the smoker should have to go outside -- and NOT hang right by the door. Smokers have the right to put into their bodies whatever toxic chemicals they choose to put into their bodies; however, they do not have the right to blow poison into *my* lungs just because we both need to renew our tags that day and the lady in front of me is getting jittery. You never know who might be allergic to smoke (like my mom and I seem to be) or who might have lung cancer or something.

I don't smoke on a regular basis....basically I can count how many times I have smoked on one hand and I don't really intend on it being any more than that but then it was never an intent to smoke in the first place (which I know doesn't make a great deal of sense but yeah). In terms of second hand smoke, a few of my friends smoke, when I was a uni I hung around with a lot of smokers and I know that I used to stand around outside with them while they puffed away, discussing HR policy and the like so I pretty much just subjected myself to that. My dad smoked until I left home but he was always very careful to not smoke around non-smokers.

I tried smoking right after I graduated high school and it didn't do a thing for me, so i quit after a year...but I didn't smoke on a regular basis anyway. My dad is still a smoker so growing up with that i think has made me not as caring as to who smokes around me or not, it doesn't mean I don't know the dangers of second hand smoke, I'm just not as sensitive to it like some people I know. There are some people I know that absolutely flip out if they get the slightest wiff of smoke, and then they spend the rest of the day talking about how horrible it smells....

I do, however, think it should be banned in public facilities.[...]
Definitely agree. Even though it was really weird at first, having to go outside to smoke (it's reeally cold here outside in the winter), it's definitely worth it. These days, I also find it really disgusting when people smoke indoors..

My main reason to not smoke (or to smoke less than I used to), is the money thing. I'm a really poor student and cigarettes just cost a lot of money.

I don't smoke, never tried and I'll never will. My father was a smoker since i remember. Only a few months ago he finally quit it. Fortunately, I wasn't exposed to a fume too much because he ver smoked in the house, only out or in basement . I was lucky but many people smoke inside and don't care about their families. I know some people who don't smoke but their clothes and things stink of smoke. It is because someone in their family smokes at home....

I dont smoke! ew I just think its gross! some people my age actually do smoke and its disgusting!!!! I never tried it and never will!

I don't smoke, I've never smoked, and I've never been tempted to smoke. Growing up, both of my best friend's parents smoked like chimneys, so I was introduced at an early age to how disgusting it is. In college, I even refused to make out with a girl I liked because she was smoking at the time. It's a disgusting habit and I have no place for it in my life.

HOWEVER...

I think the lengths that the anti-smoking people go to are ridiculous. Is second-hand smoke dangerous? Yes. Is it anywhere near as dangerous as the "health experts" quoted on the TV say? Obviously not. How do I know? Because if it were, everyone in my grandparents generation would already be dead, even the non-smokers. Smoking was SO prevalent in the 50s and 60s that it numbs the modern mind.

"Public Health" advocates and their political enablers (like Mike Bloomberg) make out smoking to be this mythical beast that kills instantly with only the briefest of secondhand contacts. Then they use that as a justification to override the property rights of restaurant and bar owners. I call bullshit. I have more to say about this, but can't get to it right now.

My position, in summary:
Smoking = unhealty, stinky, and anti-sexy
Banning smoking in private businesses = another small step towards totalitarianism

I don't smoke myself and never will, but both my parents smoke so I'm exposed to it second-hand. I absolutely hate it, and it makes me really sad to think about the effects it's gonna have on my mum and dad in the long term 🙁

I do not smoke and I have never tried it. I've never had the desire to be a smoker. I had plenty of friends who were smokers during high school, but I have long since been friendly with them. I absolutely hate smoking. And I love the fact that now I can go anywhere I want in my town and not have to worry about my dinner or evening being rude because somebody around me is smoking. I do like the anti-smoking regulations in public establishments.

I dont smoke and i've never tried it, it just doesnt appeal to me. My grandpa used to smoke so when i saw him i was exposed to some second hand smoke, but it wasnt much.

I'm a mega-smoker. Seriously. And I know it sucks for my health but dude, if I didn't smoke, I seriously believe there would be people in the hospital by my hand.

I have very mixed feelings regarding the ban on smoking going around the US. Illinois adopted it in January and while it pisses me off that I have to go outside IHOP at five in the morning to freeze my ass off to have a cigarette, I can understand it in some regards. A lot of places around here had really shoddy smoking sections [Denny's being one of them]. I understand that people don't want to be around it, but I think this whole ban tows the line between being considerate and being PC, which is something that annoys me. For years people have been dealing with smoking sections and smoking in bars, and now it's all of a sudden a big deal? I don't pay that.

But, since the ban, there are some places opening up that allow smoking. A lot of tobacco shops are expanding into cigarette-selling coffee houses and such, which means I just found myself an all-new Denny's. 🙂

PS: Legate Damar wins at life. you = much smarter than me.
