Wow, that would be an interesting twist, wouldn't it?? Catherine Madison somehow gets freed from the trophy and all of a sudden repossesses her daughter... Hmmm. Sounds like a good idea for a fic. 🙂

No, They had already made the switch a few months before that. And yes, I agree that this doesn't make much sense but that's what Amy says:

Amy-as Catherine: A few months ago, I woke up in h... her bed! I didn't know where I was, and... then I looked in the mirror...

Personally I think this was a twist too many and Catherine-as-Amy would have no reason to fake fear of herself in front of Willow and Buffy or even talk to them.

I wholeheartedly thought it was Amy in Amy's body. Never did I think that it was her mom after all. I believed this because the personality she had during this episode was what I witnessed in the later seasons when she became human again. So seeing this episode was like a giant twist for me.
I remember asking myself: "So... Amy wasn't always that crazy. Who'da thought?"

It was definitely Catherine in Amy's body for months.

I think the reason Amy starts acting more like her mother in later years is trauma. Months trapped in her mother's body. Having a psychotic evil mother while being cut off from her father whom she loved dearly. Ostracised and nearly burned at the stake for being herself. Taken advantage of by Rack (remember she was only a minor when she met him, Willow was 20/21). THREE YEARS as a rat. Being changed back into a human by someone that months earlier was powerful enough to resurrect someone.

She became bitter and vengeful.

Yep, they switched a few months before the try outs took place. That just goes to show you how good of an actress Catherine was pretending to be Amy at the try outs & I think she was genuinely messing up because she wasn't used to Amy's body yet & didn't have everything down pat.
