So what Slayer was called after Buffy died in The Gift?

But Willows spell changed all that, when she resurrected Buffy she put Buffy back into the line, think about it she wasn't just restarting Buffy's hart, she was pulling back her soul and basically creating a new Buffy by having to rebuild tissue and flesh, the spell also pulls the line back from Faith to Buffy. So Buffy now holds the line.

No, no, no.

This is what happened. Buffy became the Slayer in L.A. She died briefly in "Prophecy Girl" and Kendra was called as the Slayer. But Xander brought Buffy back to life and there were two Slayers. However, the line now ran through Kendra. When Kendra was killed in "Bargaining, Part I", Faith became the new Slayer. However, Buffy was still a Slayer, even if the line no longer ran through her. The Slayer line ran through Faith from the time of Kendra's death, until Willow's spell in "Chosen". Buffy's death in "The Gift" DID NOT activate a new Slayer, because the Slayer line ran through Faith by this time, not Buffy.

Buffy's two resurrections upset the original spell by the shamans by allowing more than one Slayer to exist. Which, I suspect that the Bejorxa's Eye was b*tching about.

No evidence inside of canon that there wasn't a third Slayer, including a third Slayer Line, past The Gift, so I cling to that theory as it makes the most sense to me. We just never got to see Olga the Vampire Slayer because she was called in Novosibirsk and an estranged CoW kept her secret from Giles & Buffy.

It's not strange, Slayers don't have friends, don't seem to have a family, who's there to help them out?
They have their watchers but they are smart enough not to do what Willow did, think about it as much as Giles loved Buffy, he didn't consider a resurrection spell, and he thought what willow did was stupid.

From what we know Buffy is a first with her little gang to help her out.

We also know that Willow is a bad ass Wicca, so even if there was another slayer with friends, there's only a slight possibility they'd have the abilities to do the spell!
You took the words right out of my mouth. 🙂

In the original Chosen script, both Buffy & Dawn had to die for Buffy's replacement to be called. They brought up how no one was called from Buffy's most recent death and said that it was because Dawn was a part of Buffy, so a part of Buffy was still alive at the time. I'm pretty sure it also said Dawn was therefore a Potential by default, and I believe she was called (I haven't read the script in years).

The other two main differences was that Buffy & Willow facilitated the First re-corporeality, and then Buffy killed it. And Xander died instead of Anya.

Personally, I prefer the "slayer line went through Kendra, now Faith" theory better, but it's not Joss', it's a fan explanation. It doesn't really matter now though.

I think I almost reported you. Those buttons should not be next to each other. Back on topic; Now I really need to get this script. Is it included on the last disc?
I keep thinking that somewhere out there, there's a chick walking around, feeling lost and empty, because she had power, she made a difference in the world, then the slayer-power was ripped from her, put back into Buffy, and now she's walking around, being all half-slayer with a ringing in her ear.

I wonder if the writers will adress this. Because Buffy walking around saying "I'm the Chosen on, the slayer line continues with me" was seriously confusing, because I assumed that the slayer-line was with Faith.

Kinda makes me want them both to die to se what happenes. I'm evil.

Wait... hasn't Joss specifically said that was what happened? That was the explanation he gave for why there was no Slayer called after "The Gift," I'm pretty sure.

That original "Chosen" script sounds like something of a conceptual mess, frankly. I'm glad he abandoned it.

My theory is that the PTBs have this book of past slayers, when one dies their name is crossed off

So what i'm saying is that I think Buffy was already down as "dead"

Ah. That seems like an theory I could most certainly settle with!. It's the least brain wracking after all.

lol

On a side not though how long were they expecting Kendra were too last, the PTB?. I liked her charachter but she was clearly not going too last long. Her dedication to the line of slaying was way more heated than most other slayers.

Lots of interesting theories here, some valid and logical - maybe some others not so much. Here's yet another perspective.

What Buffy, Faith, The potentials, The First and anyone else knew or didn't know about it all is UNKNOWN to us. Since "God" is not a element in the Buffyverse, let's call them the Powers that Be. The ancient men who created the first Slayer (I assume guided or influenced, aligned or whatever with the PTB's) made the rules but didn't or couldn't forsee the situations that arose with Buffy's 2 deaths.

Now although "The First" was the big bad, did he, she, it, whatever know everything - all these details? I doubt it. So wanting to kill Buffy hardly proves who has or doesn't have the line. It's just smart bad-guy logic. Kill em all and let Satan sort them out.

I carried this doubt for ages until someone explained their theory (here on site) that the each Slayer can only activate one other Slayer, Buffy's first death activated Kendra (RIP) who activated Faith. Works fo me.

Ok, where's n4h when you need him? I know he posted an answer to this very question on one of the million threads that have been going around about this. It made sense to me at the time, but of course, that doesn't mean it will to everyone!

Also, if it was Willow's resurrection spell that returned Buffy to the head of the Slayer Queue... it still wouldn't have resulted in a new Slayer after "The Gift", since that spell hadn't been cast yet.

Technically, from the time that Buffy was killed in Season 1 and Kendra was called, she was actually no longer even the Slayer. Kendra was. Buffy was simply someone with Slayer powers who was guarding the hellmouth. There might be some valid argument for the theory that being resurrected at the beginning of Season 6 might have somehow restored her status as a Slayer, but even then, the original unbroken Slayer line still goes through Faith. Buffy would be the beginning of a secondary line, for which no Potentials would as yet be old enough to Call (or eat solid food, for that matter) The First Evil's plan was valid exactly as Buffy stated it: First, kill all of the Potentials. Then kill Faith (somebody jumped the gun when they tried to kill Faith in prison. That would only have resulted in one of the then existing Potentials being Called). With the original Slayer line destroyed, or at least blocked until Fray's time, take out Buffy.

I still fail to see why Buffy should have Slayer powers post PG without being a Slayer. The way I understand it, if the energy had left her (which, thus, it didn't) she would have awoken from the CPR as a Potential - and probably a too-old Potential, at that.

erm... why do you think the second (or third, for that matter) Slayer Line would not share the "pool of potentials" with the original one? It's the same energy doing the jump, after all...

Oh, maybe. I first heard that theory (and preferred it) back during early season 6. At that time Joss never confirmed it, if he has it must have been after the series ended, I'd be much happier if you were right.

Well the original Chosen script is mostly identical to the one that was produced except for those 3 points. The main reason I like the final one better was because Xander didn't die.

Not sure, but it's posted here:

Has noone ever actually asked Joss this question at con's or interviews? A canon answer has to be out there somewhere

I've always though slayers were pre determined by whatever...that they have this gift/curse in them from the onset/birth and when one passes, the next one activates. The power is activated...not transfered...by a one time occurence that can not happen twice, sort of like a one use switch.

least, thats the way it seems on early Buffy.

The stuff after that is really vague and is still in the proccess of being worked out.

Buffy being re-animated very well could have split the line if it brought her back like Dean was brought back in Supernatural...no broken bones, scars, a whole new old you, but that is a different show. This seems to be the way the writing is leaning?

(Or it could be a case of her abilities just being actve again, since she is living again like she was when Kendra was called. 🙂 )

The one big difference is Buffys soul was in heaven when she was 'reanimated'; during the drowning in season one I don't think that had happened yet. The reanimation may have brought an 'active' line back into her, since it grew flesh and hair and replaced other lost things.

Does that mean that there would have to be an order to successfully end the line? Faith must be taken out first, and then Buffy to end the line they share?

Otherwise, If you take out Buffy first the line tries to correct itself and goes to Faith, and then at that point if you take out Faith the line would pass to whoever?

Would Faith then Buffy end the loop/passing of powers? Is that what the writers are getting at?

I would actually say that the major difference was that Buffy's corpse had rotted by Bargaining. Willow had to not only return the soul, but restore the body. Buffy was different at a molecular level, remember? I think magic on that scale could have re-routed the Slayer line back through Buffy.

I guess what we're arguing now is, Would another Slayer have been called if Buffy had died again sometime between "Bargaining" (when Willow's resurrection spell took effect) and "Chosen" (when the Scythe spell re-wrote the rules for calling Slayers).

I don't know if there's any way to answer that.

Confusing, but fun.

I think, knowing that the First's plan was to kill the Potentials, then Faith, then Buffy, that another slayer being called on Buffy's death was all but a certainty. I couldn't say for sure why, but I think that was what the writers were working with as of S7.
