So what Slayer was called after Buffy died in The Gift?

Interesting question, I'm thinking maybe 🙂

Really, if the line is active in its ability to call up again as it seems to be, I'd assume that would be the case. Unless it works off of a lineage kind of thing and would still be dead ended at Kendra.

I think, knowing that the First's plan was to kill the Potentials, then Faith, then Buffy, that another slayer being called on Buffy's death was all but a certainty. I couldn't say for sure why, but I think that was what the writers were working with as of S7.

True, the First tried to kill Faith before she broke out of prison.

Well, in "Chosen," The First (in Caleb guise) says point-blank to Buffy that she would have to die for any of her Potentials to be activated.

This means one of three things:
1) The First didn't know that Buffy no longer had the Slayer line (doubtful it would have such bad intel);
2) Joss forgot (possible... he's done it before);
3) Something changed after "The Gift" to give the line back to Buffy (possible, but never confirmed).

Someone must have asked JW this question before. I know he's said no Slayer was activated after "The Gift" because Buffy didn't have the line at that time, but did she get it back later?

I think that Joss Whedon forgotten. He has admitted to making a mistake on continuity before.

The Slayer line ran through Faith from the moment of Kendra's death to the activation of all the Potentials in "Chosen". As for what happened to the Slayer line, following the events of "Chosen" . . . I don't know what happened. It is possible that following Willow's spell, a girl is automatically born as a Slayer, instead of a Potential.

Watching S3's "Consequences" last night with Shempy, I found evidence that supports my theory of TWO Slayer lines past PG, and thus three Slayer lines past The Gift:

(usual disclaimer: retranslated from the German dub, so the exact wording might be a bit off)
Mayor Wilkins, to Angel posing as Angelus: "Take your time in killing her (Buffy). We wouldn't want a new Slayer to appear around here any time soon, not all of them could turn out as swell as my Faith."

While the defenders of Word-of-Joss ( 😉 @ Shempy) can argue that the line is not hard and fast proof - given that Wilkins doesn't necessarily know the in-depths of how Slayers are called - I do consider him to be pretty well informed, being a major power figure both politically and supernaturally. And besides: I have now given you canon evidence in favor of the "multiple lines" theory, while to my knowledge absolutely no canon evidence exists for the "single line through Faith" theory! (Remember that Word Of Joss is not the same as canon. As long as it's not on screen or in an official comic panel, it's just Joss' personal opinion - certainly not to be discarded lightly, but not canon.)

Good attention to detail there.

Well, you could also add to that the First's words to Buffy in "Chosen," about how none of her Potentials can become Slayers until she dies. The First would presumably be even better informed about such things than Mayor Wilkins.

The evidence against is that a) Joss said specifically the Slayer line passed to Kendra/Faith after "Prophecy Girl" and no new Slayer was called after "The Gift", and b) Nobody on the show ever even mentioned the possibility of another Slayer being out there post-"Gift." You'd think the existence of a third Slayer would be a matter of interest to Buffy & Co., and also to the Watcher's Council. I would consider it implausible that the topic never came up.

As for the "Word of Joss" being canon or not, I feel two ways about that. On the one hand, he is the final arbiter in all cases of what's canon and what's not. It's his creation and his show.

On the other hand, I'm a firm believer that the story should be told on the screen or the page... not in an interview on YouTube somewhere or behind a folding table in a convention hall. The story is the story and the commentary is the commentary. If the latter is necessary to the understanding of the former, then you messed up the story.

And I do think this was a big continuity question that should have been resolved on the show. It would only have taken one line of dialog.

but from who? The dialog that is. Who would be a credible source as this is a never before documented happening? I like how you think stories should be told on page/screen. I'm with you on that.

I fully agree with the 2nd part. Of course Joss, being creator and head writer and everything, is the one to decide what becomes canon or not, and the moment the "one line through Faith" gets established "on screen", I will of course (if grudgingly ^^ ) admit that my theory will have crumbled. But until then, I hold that the canon story not only should be, but is told on screen and only on screen. Word Of Joss is certainly heavy ammo, but until he has it put it filmed or drawn, it's merely a personal opinion and not part of canon... I take it as The Godfather's own fanwank. 😉

See above why I discount a)... and to b), well, my reasoning is that the CoW never informed Giles or Buffy about the new Slayer (who got secretly trained in Novosibirsk or Nairobi). After all, even though they cooperated for a time during the Glory crisis, they never again seemed close and trustful with each other after S3.

And for the Scoobies themselves not mentioning it... with all the grief, chaos and depression over the summer leading into S6, and throughout that entire season, perhaps they just forgot about it?

The Watcher's Council would have known if there was a new Slayer, so Giles would have known.

Thats assuming (or maybe backed up by...havent watched season 7 yet) that the way they find out if another is called can happen with an active slayer still alive. Maybe it can't go past the single slayer that is suppose to be active?

Say Buffy was the active slayer, she passess and the magic eightball or whatever says the line goes goes to kendra- she is the new slayer, she passes, and it then goes to Faith...maybe the magic whatever can't see past the most recent slayer and since faith has been alive all this time, they have no way of knowing the next potential is active....maybe that potential was hiding it well or ran away. They do know about all the potentials...or at lest new Kendra would be one, as she was groomed from an early age.

Sorry for confusing all you guys, i really don't know what I'm talking about as far as season 7 goes, but I like to talk and listen. 🙂

The Watcher's Council must have had some magical way of knowing when a new Slayer was called. They came for Buffy even though she'd never had a Watcher before she was activated. Kendra already had a Watcher, of course. We don't know whether Faith had one or not as a Potential. ("Go Ask Malice" says she did, but that's not canon.)

Even in Season 8 Andrew comes to talk to Soledad (in "Harmonic Divergence") shortly after she gets activated, and this is in a situation when new Slayers are getting activated all the time, not just one at a time. So, the Council has some way of identifying both Potentials and new Slayers.

I think they employed covens, remember the one in Devon that saw the Potentials arriving in Sunnydale....Rona and Eve, I think it was?
Very nice theories, it always nagged at my mind as well especially after Buffy's second death. I always explained the reasoning of it to myself with two possibilities.. Buffy died a VERY mystical death in "The Gift", perhaps the 'passing on' was negated. I mean, dimensions were merging together, the magic that was used to create the slayer wasn't nearly as powerful as what was going on. I always said that maybe if it wasn't her second death (if she had not already passed on the slayer power), she could have possibly ended the line by sacrificing herself. My other explanation, which I think has already been mentioned, was that the slayer essence went to the next alive potential. Since Kendra wasn't no longer alive, it skipped her and went to Faith.. who had already been activated and was very much alive. So, the power sorta dissipated within itself.
