OK I think I found the answer I was looking for...
I was watching season 3/07 Offspring.
Everyone was in Caritas talking about Darla being pregnant and the big bad was on it's way to destroy the world and everyone assumed that it was the baby about to be born. Then Wes said something which could explain why Angel told Connor in the final show "Go as long as your alive I'll be OK."
Wes mused about the Shanshu and how the vampire with a soul would be a pivotal player in the apocalypse and that maybe his (Angel's) role was to father Connor who would fight the apocalypse. So if Connor wins (the apocalypse) then Angel would still get his Shanshu. Very obscure I know but it caught my attention...what does everyone think?
