I never thought of Wesley as obsessing over Fred. Fred/Gunn get together in 'Waiting In The Wings' and pretty much act all couple-y together through 'Couplet'. Wesley does act bitter or jealous (apart from one telling comment about Fred thinking of him as her brother) and doesn't really hold a torch for her or even obsess.
Wesley gets caught up with the Connor prophecy soon after, which takes up all his time as he frantically researches. The only bearing Fred/Gunn has on him here is adding to his sense of isolation.
It's only after 'Supersymmetry' that Wesley and Fred even interact in a positive way, and then they end up working closely together during the Apocalypse. This, coupled with Fred/Gunn's troubles (which are entirely seperate from Wes- he wasn't responsible for Gunn snapping a guys neck) leads to the messy triangle.
Even then, after the kiss Wesley backs right off from Fred and doesn't go near her again until some time in S5. And when he does he sorta kindsa asks Gunn's permission- that's not really obsession or 'getting in the way' of two people in any real sense.
Wesley is the classic 'guy who never gets the girl', he's utterly tragic. And even when he finally does, briefly, get Fred, she's ripped away from him in the most horrible way possible and something else now wears her face.
Your above posts describe Spuffy to a tee though. 😉
Funny that you mention Couplet, you seem to smartly have forgotten the scene where Fred and Gunn are together enjoying a funny laugh while a drooling and jealous wesley is staring at fred, a woman came in with a job on that same scene. She wanted them to follow her husband because she thought he was cheating on her, Angel did not want to take it, not supernatural, but seems she mentioned the word witch, Wesley told her that they'll take the job, all of this on the same scene while staring at Fred. Wesley called gunn to follow her husband to keep him away from fred but the whole thing backfired on him when fred came ing right after Gunn and told Wesley that they will not let him down...heheheh.
There was another episode episode where Wesley reprimended Gunn on his relationship with Fred while on the job which almost made gunn break up with fred.
But you know, lets forget about those incidents because fred and gunn were brand new and wesley was still stung. Ok the father will kill the son kept wesley petty much occupied for a while, Lets move on to dark-wesley. Wesley is in the hospital after angel had tried to killed him. Fred comes in and delivers the ultimatum, it is over, dont comeback, you betrayed us, at this point he needs to move on and he does. He has no friends and starts a relation with Lilah on mutual usage, the relationship is hot, sexy and great. Lilah comes one day with a gift to his apartment with plans of staying over, but Wesley blows her off, saying that he has to go some where. Lilah follows him, and guess where the guy goes, he goes to watch Fred give a speak at a university, he was all giggly and fawning over her while watching her, Lilah was there looking at him and his stupid happy face. Now at this point he should had moved on completely from fred, for godsake after all that he's been through at this point, not to mention that he has a new relationship, a new chance to start over, and he still fawning over Fred. Fred is happy with Gunn.....oh and did i mention that the day before Fred had to speak at the university that she was eating and devouring gunn all over, my goodness i think it was on that same episode where Fred became the sexiest i've ever seen her, throwing herself at Gunn like a slut. But you have Dumbo Wesley fawning all over fred at the university.
Alright, alright, Wesley is one of my favorite 2, so i dont want to hurt him much, but the fact remains that he is still thinking of Fred. After the university incident, Lilah still wants to be with the dumbo.....dont be stubborn Wesley take the opportunity..... Lilah decided to dressed like fred because she thought that's what Wesley wanted, well she wasnt wrong, he loved it and had sex with her like that. Now you are claiming that wesley is not obsessed with fred, ok... Wesley little by little is getting back with the angels. After the beast almost killed the Angels, lilah went to Wesley appartment clearly worried about him, he instead of thanking her, decided to break up with her, talking about the colorlines of black and white and he decided to take a side as for the reason of the break up. But we know and Lilah knows why he broke up with her and she told him so, Fred, but as Lilah said we all know which color fred prefers, black
🙂. Around this time is when wesley kisses fred and makes a play for her which caused him and Gunn to come to blows, and gunn and Fred officially ended.
I love Wesley but there's no doubt that he was too obsessed with fred and never moved on, and it affected his life for the worse. He was too stubborn and too blind to see other opportunities for a happier life. Yes his love for Fred made him partly miserable and was partly the caused of his death. Lilah could had saved him much pain, Lilah was one of these great opportunities that came to him, she stood between him and his doom, but he failed her and his doom did not failed to find him
