Do you believe in soulmates? Do you think every person has one person they're meant to be with?

Definitely not. I view it a fairy-tale type ideal, and not at all applicable to real life. I think it can really cause people to make HUGE mistakes (staying with someone they think must be their one and only, when the relationship is unhealthy or people walking away from good relationships because it actually takes some work, so this must therefore not be their soul mate). I think their are matches, but not in line with this. For instance, everyone refers to my best friend and myself as "twin souls," and i think we got astronomically lucky to have found each other. But we connect so well because we have similar backgrounds and whatnot, not because of "fate." I'm a firm believer in free will and luck, not fate (obviously). I think you can find at least one person who you will mesh will extremely well, but that there's not only one possilibility out there. All relationships take work: romantic, friendships, family, and i think it's really unhealthy to idealize the concept of love to where people just walk away when it takes effort (i've seen it happen way too much).

I can't wait to see what everyone else's views are - great thread idea!

No. I don't really believe in the metaphysical, so something like souls just seems like nonsense to me. I also think that there's more than one person out there for you, you just have to find them and work at it. Relationships don't come easily to most, you can't expect to just see someone and then be blissfully happy.

Yes, I do. I do believe in soulmates. I do believe that every person that is their TRUE love. Not only, but one true love. I believe some people find their soulmates when they're 6, and some find theirs when they're 60. Some people find their soulmates earlier but need more time to realize it. Some people know from the beginning that's the person they're intended to spend their whole life with. I also believe that some people never find their soulmate. I don't believe your soulmate has to be your first boyfriend or first husband in that matter. But it can be. But I believe, that every person has their better half, somewhere in the world. And when the time comes, that one moment in life, one moment of clarity, every person will realize, that the person they spend their whole life with, with whom they shared everything, was the person they intended to spend their life with.

In romantic terms, the idea that there's only ONE perfect person out there to make you whole, make you complete, make you feel loved sounds unattainable and honestly, a deluded concept that actually prevents you from seeing (or finding) "the one." And hypothetically, if I'm able to find that one person, why can't others? Why are some people "fated" to not find their soulmates if I'm able to? Why is destiny, in that sense, on my side and not someone else's? It just sounds so sad and miserable, and no one should go through life like that.

One of my favorite quotes is actually from "Ever After." "You can't leave everything to fate. She's got a lot to do. You need to give her hand." I believe you can make your own fate. Your choices make your own destiny. That includes finding and choosing the person you want to be with and/or spend the rest of your life with. When it comes to finding "the one," I believe in strong connections, shared values and beliefs, passion, and love. "The soul's recognition of its counterpoint in another." (Thank you, "Wedding Crashers"). In that sense, I do believe in soulmates, when your soul connects so strongly to another's soul, and you both know it's meant to be. And I believe people can experience that with more than one person, just differently. In that sense, I think people can have more than one soulmate when it comes to romantic relationships. I also don't think that your soulmate has to be the person you end up happily married to. It could be someone you loved and lost. We've seen this through countless romantic movies, lol!

When it comes to friendships, I absolutely believe in soulmates for the same reason when it comes to romantic relationships. Your soul connects to other souls, and there's some recognition between them. 🙂

This is copied from an answer to a question in the Spuffy General Discussion thread in The Back Steps:

I've said this before, but the concept there's only one person in this world out there who "completes" you is terribly depressing to me. When I say "soulmate" I mean this person does complete you, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're the only one that can or ever will. When I say "the love of so-and-so's life," I mean the soulmate that best completes them and that they love "most." (most is in quotes because I'm theoretically quantifying love, though I don't believe that's really possible.)

And that's what I believe.

It's been really great to read all of your thoughts. great subject!

I think we connect to people on different levels... body, heart, mind, soul... and it's not to say that we don't and can't transcend those...but some people we are drawn to on what feels like a deeper or more core level than others. something in you responds to something in them. I don't think there is just one perfect puzzle piece for you, but that some people fit better than others.

hope that makes some sense.

🙂

No.

And even if there was, what's the chance those two people would ever meet? In order to believe in soulmates, you would have to also believe in Divine Intervention or God or some other force. The chance of two random people meeting who are meant to be together is too great.

I believe that there are many people we are compatible with. Finding them is the struggle.

This. A million times this.

As someone who thoroughly and wholeheartedly believes that monogamy and romance are emotional plagues that ruin uncountable lives every day, the concept of "one true love" will have me react with horror, depression, revulsion, anger, or sarcastic ridicule depending on my mood the day. And without that concept at its core, the whole "soulmate" thing makes no sense at all.

I certainly do believe that there are people who fit so perfectly that they can be considered something akin to "souls in perfect resonance with e/o"... in fact, I'm glad to have someone like that in my life right now. But that doesn't mean they're the only one who fits like that - not even at any given moment, so far, far less over the course of an entire lifetime (thus, there's no reasonable point in making any exclusive commitments to them); nor that the relationship to that perfectly resonant person would need to be of an erotic kind (let alone romantic 😛oop: ); nor that it'll last forever, because situations and people change, and friends/lovers you're in perfect sync with now may be totally alien to you five years down the line. That's life.

So it boils down to "try to love everyone you meet, and try to enjoy the ride while it lasts". Everything else seems like a sad waste of time, energy, and potential to me.

Funnily, A implies B doesn't equal B implies A. 😀

I do believe in such an other force (which I don't mind calling "God"), and complete determination... and still I consider the soulmate thing completely bonkers. 😛

We really need to get our shhh together! lol
It is hard to explain. I believe in soulmates yes but I don't think that is always the person you are supposed to be with romantically. Take Jack and Jen from Dawson's Creek they were soulmates and destined to be in each others lives I feel. Sometimes I do think two people are meant to be a couple but it is never that easy. Plus I feel like people can love more than one person so you may be with your soulmate and love someone else. Overall yes I do believe in the idea of soulmates though in certain aspects.

karma because I was just freaking thinking this, but in reference to Dawson and Joey's friendship.
Im not sure I believe in the concept of soul mates but I do consider there to be a true love you would give your everything for. IMO this could be bad for you - live is blind and sometimes when a person believes their other half is their 'soul mate' it can cause them to put up with a lot of hurt and pain they shouldn't be feeling if soul mates truly exist. I think there's always someone in your life that you may have loved romantically more than someone else later on but that doesn't mean they were good for you. I think love takes on many different concepts, it's not just the strength of the love you feel bug how that person changes you and makes you better. I hope this isn't just rambling nonsense...

"A soulmate ( or soul mate) is a person with whom one has a feeling of deep or natural affinity, similarity, love, intimacy, sexuality, spirituality, or compatibility. A related concept is that of the twin flame or twin soul, which is thought to be the ultimate soulmate. In New Age spirituality, the ultimate soulmate is the one and only other half of one's soul. However, not everyone who uses these terms intends them to carry such mystical connotations."

(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

I do believe in soulmates, but I don't necessarily agree with the "struck by lightning," or "love at first sight" concepts that seem to be included in the package. I believe people BECOME soulmates, over years of sharing the joys and pains of a life together. I think that it's something that two people have to work at, determinedly, faithfully, together. Your soulmate, to me at least, is a reward, not a gift, and it has to be earned over a period of time.

The concept of soulmates adds action to books (like the Night World series) and drive to some people. But out of all the people in the world- maybe there is a soulmate for everyone, but to think that you either have to search the world and maybe never find this person, or spend your life with someone less than ideal for you? That sucks. I'm going to enjoy my life. Nothing is ever perfect, and to think that I might have someone perfect who I may never meet is kind of sad. Like someone waving a rare Buffy item in your face and then hiding it somewhere in the world.

Am I making any sense?

I prefer to think that some people are going to just rock, and some aren't, and not worry my head off thinking that something could be better.

Yes. This. The idea there's only one person out there for me is kind of sad. And I love your last sentence. Exactly.
I don't really believe in "One True Love" soul mates. But I do think that there could be people that we are meant to connect with or meet at certain times in life in order to grow and learn.

Pretty much anyone who makes you feel like they've made your soul better or more understood. I'm using the word "Soul" kind of loosely. As a definition for the core of who you are, I guess.

I do not believe in soulmates has in "there is only one who will match you perfectly" but I do believe sometimes, people seem to find each other. I remember, four years ago, two of my friends met through my blog, and it was like...they were completely into each other. I thought it wouldn't last (yeah, I was a bit jealous). They'd say "it's like we found each other" and I was thinking "Come on, you've known each other for five days!". So yeah, I didn't think their friendship would last because it just seemed so sudden. And now, four years later, they are still best friends at a...almost cosmical level. They are more than friends but no lovers, they really just connect to each other so strongly it's like they each possessed a part of the other's heart. There is something about these two that is beautiful and yeah, I really feel like they found each other. Even when they are dating people, it's like it will never be the same as their connection.

As far as I'm concerned, I haven't met (yet) a person with whom I have such a deep connection, but I don't feel the emptiness of not having a soulmate. I have people I'm very close to and that's enough. I'd be happy to meet someone with whom I really deeply connect, wether it's romantic or friendship, but I don't really mind not having such person in my life.

I think that the concept of "soulmates" is a nice thought, and possible (since I have not really lived a full enough life to dispute it, nor dated enough women). However, it's not something I obsess over. If it happens, great, but if not, I'll be happy with a woman with whom I connect, share common interests and reciprocate romantic feelings.

I don't believe in soul mates. I think it's some Disney BS that "The one is out there for you!" and the simple fact is...Oh Jesus this is going to be one long ass rant.

So soul mates means that there is ONE PERSON, just ONE out there that suits you perfectly! 100%! They understand you completely, have some thing in common and you can openly talk to them.

1. This can and would honestly never happen because of Factors.

A.) Factor 1. Looks!

Looks play a huge part in someone you choose to like and so forth. So the biggest problem is you might have already skipped your soul mate because their looks aren't to your likings. You would rather have someone else or somebody better looking. This is one thing because if the persons looks doesn't suit you nothing is going to work out for the time being, but usually that's enough to turn someone off completely.

So you never know your soul mate might be one ****ing fine fella or he might look like he got hit by a bus. So there's one problem.

B.) Factor 2! Money!

Money is a huge problem which also factors into trying to find a soul mate. Someone doesn't have enough money is also another turn on that seems to leave a huge impact on how things would work out. Without money what happen? They can't buy anything? No rent, food, car, internet, computer, music, books, and I could continue to list this for what could seem like forever.

Money also build security in which it gives you a place to live and roof over your head. If someone had no place to live and came up to ask you if you would go out with him EVEN THOUGH HE MIGHT BE YOUR POTENTIAL SOUL MATE would you? Most likely no.

C.) Factor 3! Likes and Dislikes!

What happens if your Soul Mate was a complete opposite of you? You loved Buffy he didn't. You liked this he liked that and so forth. He could be the complete opposite and how would that go? They say opposites attract but in reality soon they become to opposite to stay together.

So taking these three things into consideration you have one of three possibilities.

You'll find someone with no money, no place to live, and looks like a potato, and he is your soul mate.

Or

You'll find a multi-billionaire, who has 30 houses all over the world and looks like the guy out of your dreams.

Or

You'll find an average guy, who may or may not have a good job, and might live with his parents, studio apartment, or in a small apartment/house.

Also I will post my chances of how these things might happen in percent starting from top to bottom.

49.5%

1%

49.5%

So instead of trying to find a "Soul Mate" find someone you like Ride em like a Cowboy/Cowgirl or whatever your into. Enjoy it and it it works out cool. If not oh well time to go on with life!

Lastly instead of trying to find a perfect match, when you find someone you like and they talk to you cause honestly we don't want it to be like.

Outcast liking the popular boy in high school and then expecting him to be all "Hey I love you wanna date" cause like don't work like that.

Some guy/girl talks to you and he's kinds cute know what! TALK TALK TALK FLIRT and see how things goes.

I get pissed at people who are all "I want my soul mate" because we live in the real world. There is no such thing as soul mates just "Aye wanna smang?" because sex has somehow become the focal point into a relationship these days and it's the truth.

I will post thing because I feel I should post something all nice and cute after my post and yes.
