I've said this before, but the concept there's only one person in this world out there who "completes" you is terribly depressing to me. When I say "soulmate" I mean this person does complete you, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're the only one that can or ever will. When I say "the love of so-and-so's life," I mean the soulmate that best completes them and that they love "most." (most is in quotes because I'm theoretically quantifying love, though I don't believe that's really possible.)
This. A million times this.
As someone who thoroughly and wholeheartedly believes that monogamy and romance are emotional plagues that ruin uncountable lives every day, the concept of "one true love" will have me react with horror, depression, revulsion, anger, or sarcastic ridicule depending on my mood the day. And without that concept at its core, the whole "soulmate" thing makes no sense at all.
I certainly do believe that there are people who fit so perfectly that they can be considered something akin to "souls in perfect resonance with e/o"... in fact, I'm glad to have someone like that in my life right now. But that doesn't mean they're the
only one who fits like that - not even at any given moment, so far, far less over the course of an entire lifetime (thus, there's no reasonable point in making any exclusive commitments to them); nor that the relationship to that perfectly resonant person would need to be of an erotic kind (let alone romantic
😛oop: ); nor that it'll last forever, because situations and people change, and friends/lovers you're in perfect sync with now may be totally alien to you five years down the line. That's life.
So it boils down to "try to love everyone you meet, and try to enjoy the ride while it lasts". Everything else seems like a sad waste of time, energy, and potential to me.
In order to believe in soulmates, you would have to also believe in Divine Intervention or God or some other force.
Funnily, A implies B doesn't equal B implies A.
😀
I do believe in such an other force (which I don't mind calling "God"), and complete determination... and
still I consider the soulmate thing completely bonkers.
😛
