What if it wasn't Buffy Spike had feelings for but Dawn? How do you feel about this pairing?

pedophylia is illegal and icky. They're like 20-something apart in age!

Right, Angel is a pedophile. He fell in love with Buffy when she was 15. And when Spike was with Buffy, she wasn't a teenager anymore. If Spike was with Buffy at the age Buffy was when she was with Angel, he would have been a pedophile as well. So Spike at his age and Dawn at the age of Buffy back then, it is very icky. But that's a little off topic.

I've always wondered how Joss got away with that in Season 2, even just the one time. Buffy was definitely "jail bait," and the networks are real strict about not portraying or even directly mentioning underage girls having sex
I love the big brother - little sister dynamic that spike and dawn have. I wouldn't want to see that change.

Well, to play devil's advocate a bit, vampires falling in love with teenagers doesn't ever seem to get frowned upon much in fiction, considering they stay young forever (physically, at least, not really mentally.) In Angel's case though, he's a vampire trapped in the body of a man in his mid-20s so it's still awkward, and if he were a human he'd be one of those guys people around town whispered about. Angel even lamented to Buffy (in "Reptile Boy") something like "I knew this would happen... I'm over 200 years old and you're a 16-year-old girl," implying that their maturity levels were off, but not that there was a big creep factor.

But when Angel first saw Buffy through the window (at 15) did he fall in love with her or did he just want to help her? Maybe somebody can help me out, cuz it's been a while since I've seen "Becoming."

As for Spike, he was what, 18-20 when he turned into vampire? Slight age difference in human years.

Plus age of consent, true definition of "pedophile," etc. etc. This IS off-topic though.

Well, I think in "Helpless" he said that he loved her from the second he saw her walking down the steps.

I really think he was older. I always thought he was around or almost 30.

Chosen Enemy Totally agree with you. The age thing (even though he's a vampire and therefore immortal) and loving her from the moment he saw her (and she was still an airhead back then, no matter the divorce stuff) are some of what turn me off from Bangel... That and the sickly sweet romance.

I think he was late 20s... like, 28 or something.

That actually makes him older than Angel was when he was turned! Lol. And yeah! Fight the Bangel! Lol.

I'm fairly certain I'd have had the same reaction to Spawn (lovely 'ship name) that I did to Dander...it just doesn't sit well with me. I prefer them as big brother/protector types for Dawn over romantic interests. But to each her own, I suppose.

Yes. In Prodigal, I believe. His birth year was on his tombstone, if recall correctly. He was 25 or 26.

Oh. I was just guessing how old Spike was when he was turned based on his looks (although JM played Spike in his 30s). He seemed 25 to 30 years old. No way Angel looked 26, though. He looked like he would be in his 30s... Just checked, he was born in 1727 and sired in 1753.

Though Dawn may have been the same age by season 7 as Buffy was when she started dating Angel, the glaring difference is that Dawn is merely a human, (once that key business was taken care of). Really, the thought of a young, human girl with a vampire who is not only over 100 years old but was turned when he was older than 18 has a lot more of a pedophilic connotation. Buffy is a super hero who as it turns out is made from demonic essences. Though I admit to getting a little squeamish when I really think about a 16 yr old Buffy with Angel, that is really quite less significant than the idea of a true teenage girl with a vampire.

In fact, in the entire series there isn't an instance where a human being truly has a physical relationship with a demon. Anya is biologically, physically human when she is with Xander. Cordy is part demon around the time Cangel is suggested. And it isn't until she's part demon that her physical relationship with Gru begins, either.
Willow is a witch, Oz is a werewolf. Tara is a witch, (though to a lesser extent). In general, all physical pairings are fairly equally matched when it comes to the degree of supernatural/physical inclinations of both partners.
Dawn/Spike would truly stand out as a glaring exception to all that.

Oz became a werewolf, before Willow became a witch.

You also can't match characters based on their powers. Buffy is still a 16 yr old, emotionally and physically. That doesn't change simply because she has super powers.

I don't personally feel that Buffy and Dawn are equitable in comparison. Buffy, by virtue of being the Slayer, was treated and expected to behave in a more adult fashion. Dawn, on the other hand, was more-or-less allowed to be a teenager in that she was protected and cared for.

And I think I don't get as creeped by the Buffy/Angel age difference as I would at the Spike/ Dawn age difference in part because the power differential is not as severe in Bangel as in Spawn. Buffy could physically rival Angel in the even that a situation became uncomfortable for her much more effectively than our little baby Dawnie could with Spike.

Don't get me wrong though...even though, I've always liked Bangel, I've never thought of Buffy as a child during the relationship and maybe I should have...which would've made me uncomfortable with it.
