This will basically be your gut feeling, since it's never mentioned one way or the other after the end of Season 7.

Do Spike and Dawn ever actually become friends once he returns at the end of Season 8? his recent reactions to her problems in Season 9 are a pretty good indication that he still has feelings for her, and maybe that he is still honoring his promise to Buffy at the end of Season 5, but as far as we know, there's never any either affirmation of either a renewed friendship or continued animosity on Dawn's part. Personally, I hope that they settled their differences, but I have nothing to actually tell, one way or the other.

I dont, or if they did it didn't actually make them friends again.

We might see more of it with how Season 9 ended, but I think with Dawn and Xander together, that would just push Spike out more.

I don't think they ever became friends again. It's a shame, 'cause I always thought their relationship was so cute and I loved Spike looked after her like a big brother.
I do, however, LOVE that scene where Dawn tells Spike that if he ever hurts Buffy again he'll "wake up on fire". WOW she was chilling there!!

I don't think they'll ever be friends again. Some of the viewers were able to forgive Spike, but as a sister, Dawn will never be able to do that, with reason.

I'm not sure that they would ever become friends again. They barely interact on the show following Dawn's "You'll wake up on fire" speech. I think if they had put aside their differences and struck up a friendship again, it would probably have been shown in some way.

Thinking back to Season 5, Dawn has a crush on Spike, but as soon as he tries to hurt Buffy in Crush, the next episode, we see Dawn as angry at him as the rest of the Scoobies. I think that she is fond of Spike, but I think when he hurts Buffy, he crosses a line, and whilst she doesn't pursue a vendetta against Spike, I don't think she was ever close enough to him to want to attempt to rekindle a friendship with a man who, on some level, is the man that tried to rape her sister. And as for Spike's feelings towards Dawn, I always got the feeling that he kind of saw her more as a link to Buffy than as her own person. He looks out for her in Season 5 as a way to get into Buffy's good books, in part. He looks out for her between Seasons 5 and 6 because of a promise he made to Buffy. Most of his time at the Summers house in S6 is spent with Buffy rather than Dawn. I'm not saying that he doesn't like Dawn, and this might have changed in the comics (I haven't read them), but I definitely think that his closeness to Dawn is motivated a lot more by her closeness to Buffy, and again, I think that after the bond they had was severed, it was not so close that he would actively seek to try and heal it.

It's a real shame that this friendship didn't really go anywhere in Season 6, I suppose when Spike started focusing on Buffy, he just kinda ignored Dawn. 🙁

Do I want to see it revived? Not really, I don't think it will be in the comics. Seems like the whole Dawn/Xander thing has pushed out any Spike/Dawn friendship, although they still act like...comrades in arms maybe, but that's just judgeing from the latest issue, I'll wait to see if it goes anywhere.

I wouldn't rule it out in the comics. I think we have seen them fall into old rhythms in the first 2 issues.

The thing with this issue is that it had very little to do with the story ( though it does work very well.) The reason Dawn and Spike's friendship ended on the show is because James had a really inappropriate attraction to Michelle and wrote a wicked creepy song about her called "Dangerous." Joss made a point of them not having scenes with just the two of them once he realised.

Is this real? I mean I did google the song and all (I had no clue about this until now). But did Joss really prevent the two from having scenes together? Is it something that Michelle or James asked him to do?

The song seems so random (and yes, inappropriate), but it could have been anything from a joke between Michelle and James to something far more inappropriate than that. I'd be curious to know the whole story.

Here's James at a con.

I'd have to dig for more stuff but honestly, the whole thing kind of creeps me out.

creepy indeed
That's the video I ended on when I did my search. I agree, the whole thing is creepy. I read some stories saying that he wrote the song because Michelle had a crush on him and he felt uncomfortable, but who knows. This is all a bit weird to me.

Agreed. Weird.

Now all the Spike/Dawn scene are gonna have even more uncomfortable undertones. 🙁

Still, they could've had...maybe some less creepy scenes in S7, when Dawn could be viewed by the audience as an attractive young woman (in 'Him' for example) and not as a child/tweenager.

*sigh* then again, maybe not.

Man, now I feel really skeeved out.

I agree. I almost wish I hadn't learned this
Yeah, I found another interview where he sort explains how Sarah kept Michelle insulated during BTVS, not allowing crew male crew members work without shirts when they were building sets etc He goes on about how she's too young and "things" in Hollywood could ruin her life or his life. it was so strange. He also mentioned Joss making a call on their scenes because the audience were getting the wrong idea about Spike and Dawn. I can't find a quote that directly says Joss made that call but in fairness, how could I. They could never say that out loud.

To be honest, it's all stuff I'd rather not know. I'll link the quote later when I'm not using my phone.

Thanks for the quotes! It really does illuminate some things.
Well hey, at least now Michelle is a successful young actress, so something went right at least.
I've seen her in a couple of things since Buffy and she's really blossomed...I mean, uh, her acting has.
Crap. 😱

" (2001 Australia con) Man, I wish that I was that good when I was that young.
(5-01 Big Hit Interview) What I will say about Dawn is that things are not always what they seem. That it will pan out into something incredibly interesting and that, as an actress, Michelle Trachtenberg kicks it. Fabulous. Absolutely Fabulous. I've had three or four scenes and they've always been just easy. Easy, fine and wonderful. You see Joss is always tricking you, leading you in the opposite direction. He's always a magician. He's always a trickster. He is telling you now not to like her. She's always in the way. She's always whining, right? But just trust us.
(6-01 Birmingham, UK) The people on the set call me Tigger because I'm always trying to keep awake, but Michelle's even bouncier than me. Dawn and Spike have a great relationship. If Spike were bad Dawn would be the first person he killed and when she's good, she's the first person he's protecting. 'He'll protect anything Buffy loves: Giles, Dawn her Mom' .
(3-02 Buffy Magazine) She rocks as an actor!. She's great to work with. She's a total pro. She's so talented - it's so unfair! How dare she be that good! I wasn't that good at her age - I sucked when I was her age!
(2002 - Interview with Trachtenburg - unknown source) I give her boy advice. I think you've got a good one.
(1-03 Creation Con) We all whine! Why you guys picking on Dawn?! I never understood that. In fact, it's like in the beginning of the show, like, Joss told you to hate Dawn, you guys know that? He wanted you ... but then I think he was counting on you feeling guilty for that. I'm not gonna talk about biting Michelle Tractenberg with a ten-foot pole. She's much too young to even be thinking about (? something?). We were given a mandate when she came on the set: KEEP HER YOUNG! If you know what I mean! So, she hates us now for it. She's like 17, and we don't let ... we completely isolate her from any ... like, Sarah won't allow anyone to work with their shirt off while they're building sets, while Dawn ... while Michelle is around, you know. It's that much. Because the thing, I mean, seriously, in Hollywood, it can really ruin a young person's life if they don't have a little insulation from some of that stuff in Hollywood. And it can actually ruin your life if you're my age! {hehe} So, yeah, so I'm all about protecting Michelle Tractenberg, she probably hates me for saying that, you know, yeah.
(6-03 Moonlight Rising) She was fabulous, but I did get a couple- I got some scenes with her in"¦was it 6? Yeah, yeah. Was it five? "¦she's really wonderful you know, and the character allowed you guys to get led down the path a little bit cuz I mean, you had Dawn starting to hang out with Spike. And I'm not sure if it came across like Joss and Marti were intending but the audience was supposed to be like, what is she doing get away from- he's evil, he's gonna eat her. And how dangerous it is for an older sister to start dating the bad boy and give that message to the younger sister like this is ok, this is healthy, this is good. But beyond that, they didn't really include enough in the characters to- to need to bring them together that much. You know, beyond that statement, I don't know how much fertile ground there was, I'm not talking about Michelle Trachtenberg, I'm talking about Dawn and Spike. I don't know if there would've been the best interesting scene between those two, after that. I dunno. It's Joss. "

Make of it what you will...

I loved the Spike and Dawn friendship and do wish they had explored it more in the show.

I knew that James had wrote Dangerous about the her and pretty sure he said it was about her crush on him, and how if she were older she would be too good for him.

that's interesting
I think the quotes are all harmless.

But I've never heard the song before, besides being awful, that is far too creepy. Gross.

It was a really awful song. Dear god the lyrics. William the Bloody, indeed.
