I thought Spike was the best aspect of Angel's fifth season. And Illyria, although we had to lose Fred to get her.
Let's be honest, Spike could have chemistry with a paper bag. 😍I adore Spike so of course I loved him in Angel. Also? his chemistry with Angel is fire.
And you know Spike would draw Angel's face on it (like the punching bag in s7). 🤣SPIKE: *raises paper bag* I call him Angel. *sets bag on fire with lighter* now Angel's dead. How sad. *walks off*
Recurring guest would've been perfect. However, I think if James really wanted to leave for Season 6, let him. Or, better yet, bring him back for a short run, or recurring status. Angel clearly doesn't need him around.
He's talked about how Joss originally tried to get him to work on the show for less money but he said no he'd only do it for what he was making on Buffy. Not more just the same. Which is fair, imagine going into work and your boss telling you that he's decided to cut your pay. You wouldn't do it either.Recurring guest would've been perfect.
Spike was worth every cent they spent on him. Without Spike, the entire story would have been 'Angel and his company willingly get absorbed into Wolfram & Hart and never oppose their agenda again'. Spike was a distraction from what they had done and a welcome relief from season 4 which had some of the worst scenes in the entire show. He easily becomes the focal point of Angel just the way he did with Buffy. Both shows became The Spike Show, one featuring Buffy and the other featuring Angel.
