as far as the Shanshu deal goes, the prophesy which reads "the vampire with a soul, etc..." could be speaking of the generic vampire with a soul, much like the phrase "the man who step on a rake will get thwapped on the head" speaks of the generic man, maybe its saying that any vampire with a soul will become human once their destiny is complete

YA! I'm working on a sort of fan-fiction spin-off, which plays the idea that "the vampire with a soul" IS generic. The prophesy doesn't name the vampire, or give a more descriptive account of who this vampire with a soul is, so it doesn't matter, provided you do as the prophesy says, you will be redeemed; Shanshu.

That's the thing with prophesy: It never turns out like you initially think it will, even though once it's fulfilled, the words do make sense.

THEORY:

Maybe Wolfram and Hart knew that the amulet would make the bearer human. That could have been the reason that W&H gave their offices to Angel Investigations. They could have been protecting their own apocalypse by sending Angel into Sunnydale to become a weak human.

Of course this only works if Spike is going to come back as a human - but that seems relatively likely now...

I love Angel, but Spike CHOSE to have a soul, Angel didn't. I think that makes Spike a little more worthy of the shanshuing than Angel. But either one would be cool with me 🙂

Spike only CHOSE to have a soul because of Buffy. Without her, he wouldn't have even bothered. Plus, the chip softened him up.
BTW, it wasn't pointed out whether or not Spike died. The amulet could have protected him.

Not to go all Caleb on ya, but whatever Joss has in mind for Spike on Angel, I'd say the fun hasn't even begun yet. I'm lookin' forward to season five!

I don't think, having to do with the Shanshu, it matters that much why Spike wanted to get his soul or not, cause Angelelus never wanted to get his soul at all! It matters on what Spike did after he got it, and I think if he was to Shanshu he would definitely deserve it

Here is what I think should happen.

The amulet is retrieved by Wolfram and Hart from the hellmouth, Lilah is leading the team of retrieval and she smirks as she looks at the remainders - one less opponent in who gets the next Apocalypse.

During the whole 'soul extraction' thing it appears Spikes soul was consumed into the amulet as he turned to dust, so in fact only his body turned to dust. Lilah brings the amulet to 'command central' where she places the amulet in the artifact room (where they found the shanshu scroll).

At the end of the first episode we would zoom in on the amulet and enter it, we see Spike there trapped inside being chased and tortured by the demons of the amulet - the demons it consumed as it ate the hellmouth (this also opens up ideas for the plot of W&H apocalypse, that they will unleash them).

In the next episode Lilah prepares to release Spikes soul to become the new link to the senior partners. It is then decided to extract his soul into the white-room, the only place that exists outside of the continuum of reality but is still linked to it.

Spike wakes up, confused in the white room and doesn't understand what is happening - he immediatly starts sensing some form of connection to the senior partners as his eyes start to shimmer in red (end of episode 2).

That's a good theory but the amulet is so deep under Sunnydale it'd be hard to retrieve now. All of Sunnydale is over it, and Spike was already deep under the earth to begin with while the town sunk.

Spikes body and ashes is irrelevant since its just a host for his soul, his soul would be confined to the white room. Besides I think W&H have the fundings to dig in Sunnydale for the amulet 😀

I read somewhere that the whole Shanshu thing is actually an insider joke.

Apparently there's a shop in Beverly Hills called "Shan's Shoes".

Somehow it all ties in with Spike's "Drowning in Footwear" line from Chosen.

I don't think anyone has already mentioned this above (sorry if you did - I only skimmed the previous posts) but could Spike appear in Angel as a ghost? - as I believe he was supposed to in the proposed Faith spin-off that isn't going to happen now.

Although, I don't recall many times when the ghostly side of the supernatural have featured in the Buffyverse (should that be Angelverse post-Buffy finale?) except for Dennis in Cordy's old apartment. (There's a character I'd like to see next season! 🙂 😉)

It doesnt have to make sense for spike to come back as in series 3 of buffy angel came back from nowhere, but if spike does come back he will be human, because his vampire life would suck if he was in love.

I personally seriously doubt they will use the Shansu prophecy at this point, much less bring Spike back as human. I'm betting Joss will create some way to bring him back to where all his character development over the last 3 seasons is not wasted. What sort of interest would a human Spike bring to Angel? We all know if he was human he would immediatly seek out Buffy. Not to mention we have seen him as a human in the flashbacks. Intriguing it may have been how he became the Slayer Killing Vampire, his human side I wouldn't call "interesting".
