I thought that Spike went to get The Chip out of his head not to get a soul??
I read an interview with Joss shortly after the end of season 6 that said Joss specifically wrote it to make us think Spike wanted the chip out so he could be evil again, but really Spike wanted the soul back the entire time and Joss was just tricking us.
The rest of this is my thoughts on the way Spike will be introduced to Angel. Spoiler in the first sentence if you have not see the Buffy series finale.

My first thought was that for some reason Angel and the others would resurrect Spike the way Darla was brought back. But I could have sworn I read an interview with either Joss or James that said Spike will not be human when he returns. Then again, I could just be remembering wrong. It would see to me that the shanshu prophecy was about any vampire with a soul and it just doesn't *fit* in my mind with the way things are. What I mean is, when I think of *shanshu* I think of the way Angel became human after getting that demon's healing blood mixed with his own... I think the episode was called
I Remember You, Buffy was in it... anyway, that's how I imagine shanshu, that the heart would suddenly start beating again, etc. not as a piles of ashes suddening transforming into a human.
There is another possibility that I thought of... when they brought Darla back, she was human with a soul. At the time when she had been killed she was a vampire without a soul. Maybe how you come back is a direct opposite of what you were when you died/got dusted? So they could do the *Darla resurrection spell* thing but Spike whether he would be vampire or human, he would not have his soul anymore. I think it would be interesting to see a human without a soul... but regardless of whether Spike still has a soul when he returns, it doesn't mean too much because Angel has lost his and got it back more than once.
