So new member JustToClarify (not tagging coz this is a spoiler thread) is reviewing BtVS and AtS, one episode per day (I think). It's like the Mark Watches Buffy concept, in that this will be his first time watching, but the style of writing and views are refreshingly different (coughcough no self-indulgent stories or ALL CAPS reviews coughcough).

Here's the blog: http://modernbuffy.blogspot.com/

The NO SPOILERS thread: https://buffy-boards.com/showthread.php?p=1053246

And this thread is for laughing at his laughable assumptions--I mean, intelligently discussing his reviews.

  • Is Buffy's mother evil? She seemed suspicious throughout the episode.
Hmm...I never thought that Joyce seemed suspicious. Saying that I watched BTVS with previous knowledge of the show.

  • Will people just frequently pop up dead in and around Sunnydale throughout the series? Wouldn't that raise a few eyebrows?
Hahaha. Good question 😛 Obviously JTC hasn't realised that the inhabitant of Sunnydale are really dumb yet.

  • Why was the school not closed after a dead body was found in the locker rooms?
Well if the school closed every time someone showed up dead, it'd probably get closed every other week 😉

  • The writing seems slightly less comedic than I was expecting, with just the right amount of humour present.
Well I agree 🙂

  • What are Buffy's powers exactly? Is she the only person in the world that can kill a vampire?
Haha, so many other people kill vampires in the show that it leaves me wondering what's so special about the slayer. 😉 Oh and when she jumps over the fence...that annoys me.

  • Is Giles evil? Everybody is a suspect to me at this early stage.
I can see why JTC wondered this. He did seem pretty sinister when he put that 'vampyr' book on the desk 😛

I've not looked at any replies to this thread, and won't until I've finished the series (feel free to discuss my experiences with me in the no spoilers thread linked above).

I'd just like to comment on this quote, in that I won't necessarily be reviewing an episode each day. I'll try to watch an episode/write a review every day, but there will be some days that this won't be possible (for instance, I won't be writing a review of the second episode today, in order to get into the correct rhythm). I hope you enjoy the reviews and find much enjoyment in my naive thoughts and expectations.

His second review is up. The Harvest, of course.

Having her use her abilities in a coherent and apt manner is important, and the way in which she utilised these powers were woven into the story, not woven around it (for instance, she jumped over the school fence because she had to rescue Jesse, not because she wanted to become a cheerleader or something equally mundane).

Just wait till he gets to "Witch". Using her powers for mundane things like cheerleading? Right on.

Buffy's mother surely knows something about the Slayers. I still believe she's a suspect. In contrast, I don't suspect Giles much anymore.

Hm, I didn't suspect Joyce at all in the entire show's run. I just liked how well they wrote her as a mother, how mom-like she was in tone and behaviour.

Gah, I can't wait for him to finish season 1 and get to Spike and Dru and Angelus. S1 is pretty uninteresting, except for Prophecy Girl. Although he does get to meet Jenny and dual shotguns Darla.

Agreed, that's kind of funny... I never viewed anything about Joyce as suspicious, she just seemed like a mom, a typical mom struggling with being single in her duties and at times somewhat absent.

I wonder if these suspicions will go away as the season goes on, I don't see how they couldn't... Joyce never takes up that much space after all. She's kind of background material for the most part.

🙂

All Monkey's are french and mothers are evil...it's a fact :-)
Looks like he doesn't like standalones, which means he'll really enjoy the arc-driven later seasons. And dislike S4, I predict.

I would, however, also like to see Xander getting a more active role in the proceedings - he simply didn't have much to do this episode.

Which is basically Xander's arc, lol.

I thought it was interesting that he immediately picked up that Angel wasnt in witch, i remember myself being particularly intrigued by him even after ep1. I look forward to his review of 'Angel'.

I actually forgot that he wasnt in The Witch. Was he in every other season 1 ep?

Just did a rewatch of S1. He's definitely not in every episode.
I think there was one other he wasnt in....Cant remember which...

I think he wasn't wasn't in 'The Puppet Show' , 'Nightmares, or 'I Robot...You Jane.'

Definately is in Nightmares 🙂

Oh ok 🙂 I just did a search in the transcripts, so I just assumed he wasn't in those eps as his name didn't come up. 😛

OOoh I could well be wrong! i just seemed to remember him being there when Buffy was all vampy!
Dude, after his disappointment in "The Witch", I had a feeling that he would absolutely despise "Teachers Pet", so imagine my surprise when he said that it was his favorite episode since the premiere. 😛 See, everyone views Buffy differently! That's awesome.

When I first watched Teacher's Pet, I was oddly fascinated by the sheer... disgusting-ness of Ms French's modus operandi. I mean... ew. So I didn't think the episode was terrible either. Like him, I like Dr Gregory (who doesn't?) and how Buffy used her smarts. But yeah, like so many others, I much preferred Witch.

I really feel as though the series should rush past Xander's obsession with Buffy, and enable him and Willow to become a couple.
Didn't we all? I thought his crush was pretty tiresome.

I wish that Xander could finally get some meaningful tasks to perform.
So does he.

Angel promised that he will be around, yet I'm still curious as to how he will integrate himself.
Cryptic warning, working up a load of sexual tension, then prancing off like a magnificent poof.

After his latest review on 'The Pack,' I'm looking forward to seeing his reaction to Snyder. I wonder if he's going to expect him to have a similar fate to Flutie. If he does, he'll end up being mightily disappointed 😛

nightshade agrees: not really! Snyder got eaten alive too!

True, true! I'd forgotten that 😛 But still, he IS around for 2 and a half seasons, which Flutie definitely was not.

I want him to review Angel!!! Lol!

I've been rewatching the series now too, although I tend to watch a few eps in a row and skip a few days in between. I love these reviews though, its almost like watching it with someone new. I may or may not be living vicariously through his reviews lol.

Its funny though, I actually liked the pack and didn't think it as dated as he did. I think Angel is a much better ep though and it should deliver on some nice plot twists if they haven't already been spoiled here...surely none of us have any Angelus pics in avs/banners, right?
