Spoiler! Spoilery speculations about season 9

Says the history of the show. Joss consistently accomodates his mythology to his narrative demands.

F.ex., in Nightmares Vampire!Buffy helps her friends. And, before you argue that "it's a dream so it doesn't count", I want to elaborate that, again, I'm not talking about mythology; I talk about writing techniques. When Joss needs Vampire!Buffy cooperating with Scoobies, he makes her cooperative. But in Doppelgangland he needs a completely evil vamp!Willow - and she's completely evil.

Buffyverse mythology is so rich and so fuzzy that a writer can find a basis for practically every twist.

So basically nothing of the sort has happened before and you just think it might happen because Joss is terrible at continuity? Funny how even I, the guy who thinks Joss has totally lost it, don't think he is that bad at continuity. And anyway, if I agree with your premise, speculating becomes rather pointless as Buffy becoming a pink elephant and Xander becoming Superman would be be just as likely as your theory.

I agree that it's bizarre but we see in "What's My Line" that Dru the vampire is extremely and passionately upset over the loss and suffering that her family experienced at Angel's hands.

I always fast-forward that scene but I reckon Dru was just messing with Angel and pretended to be hurt by his actions.

Actually, I think that Joss said in an interview once that he would have no problem whatsoever in disregarding established canon if it got in the way of a good story. If he was of a mind to do it, he could turn Buffy into the traditional change-into-a-bat, impervious to stakes, floating mist kind of vampire that Dracula has always been depicted as being. Just remember, it's his universe, so he gets to make all the rules, and ignore them whenever he wants to.

You know, I discussed season 8 a lot in this forum, and I'd like to discuss season 9, but it seems like this has turned into a place to talk about how awful the comics are and what a rotten storyteller Joss is.

So, I guess I'll stay out of it.

This whole thing about "this new revelation in vampire mythology that says that since the Seed broke, demons have to possess the animated undead corpses of vampires remotely, from their hell dimensions, instead of entering directly into their bodies as before" is so confusing to me. I hope we get more of an explanation. And that picture is really funny. 🙂

BTW, I just read a very interesting spec by Nmcil (on another board) - that Buffy may end up the next guardian of the seed, The Master's successor, or a vessel for the seed.

Hmm, that's an interesting line of thought. But, the seed is broken. Unless they get a new/different seed?
 
I don't think Buffy will have much to do with the Seed at all - let alone becomes its immortal vampiric guardian. Why would another one be wanted when Willow is going to 'work the wound' - as per her one-shot Saga's prediction? The future has already been defined. Lets not forget that in 200 years vampires and demons will be near extinction and mutated/genetically modified humans will be the rage of the day. IMHO, all these speculations about Buffy-vampification come from nowhere. There is something else brewing with her - so I assume this vampire-2 Buffy idea ( eek - mindless, saliva dripping beast remotely controlled ?) appeared as a counterweight to something else that the audience does not want to be true ( and for all we know - it might not). Mere speculation of mine of course.

It's not pointless as long as as we analyse possible future arcs from their dramatic and metaphoric standpoint. Buffy becoming a vampire, let alone becoming The Master's successor, could be a powerful exploration of Nietzsche's statement "When you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you".

I agree, it's funny! I don't know what to think about "remote possession", but maybe it's something we aren't supposed to overthink - just a plot necessity to differentiate vampires, to create a hierarchy in vampire world.

I hope to get a chance to ask Scott Allie about it during the next Q&A session.

I have to reread Fray - but, as far as I remember, magic slowly crept back: demons and vampires became too strong and Fray was called to restore the balance. Of course, it happened 200 years in the future, but Joss can easily retcon it as magic coming and going like high and low tide.

As to Willow - we know that she'll be alive for 200 years, so there will be more magic elements in her journey.

If you mean possible pregnancy arc, I definitely don't want it to happen! 🙂

I like reading pregnancy and baby fics, I even wrote a fic in which Buffy and Spike raise baby!Angel who turned into an infant as a result of the shanshu. But I believe that, in BTVS case, baby stories should stay in the realm of fanfiction.

Ahh, I was just about to post that link! Although I guess I could re-post it in the Firefly section since it includes a Serenity comic as well.
I will jump in to say that I think the "remote possession" idea people have been talking about is because Willow's words were given in an unclear way in the book. She says:

"But without the Seed, demons can't pass into this world. The demon has to possess the vampire's body from another dimension."

People are reading that as: "But without the Seed, demons can't pass into this world, SO the demon has to possess the vampire's body from another dimension."

But in reality the second sentence was just supposed to clarify how vampires are normally created. It would have been clearer if the two sentences had been reversed:

"The demon has to possess the vampire's body from another dimension. But without the Seed, demons can't pass into this world."

So vampires have the ability to turn their victims into the mindless monsters we're seeing here ("zompires"), but normally a demon then comes into our world from a hell dimension and possesses that monster, creating the vampires we know. Since those demons can no longer get here, we're left with the mindless monsters.

Of course, Joss could rewrite that element of mythology too...
 
AC -Maybe that was a question that needed to be asked of Mr Chambliss. Instead he was peppered with all sorts of silliness. I was arguing this same idea on another forum ( re: no conduit - no possession by a demon spirit only demonic blood infection that animates the corpse and results in all the 'special powers' like strength, blood suckage and daylight allergy) until number 3 hit the stands. I was so pissed at the idea that I actually went and bought all 3 Buffy issues - just to get an idea how badly did they blunder - was not reading the comic before that. Now I am convinced they truly imply the 'remote possession' from another plane. Ask Allie when he comes back for Q/A session if you wish. I suspect they would try to keep the matter vague though.

MW - at least on that 'special' comic the blond person in red tights is not pregnant by a demon and not drooling. But the lil pencil in her hand looks kinda pointless if she is taking a vacation - unless there are 'land sharks' aka 'space vamps' out there.

Btw, I suspect that the issue they are giving away is going to be a standalone special that would not necessarily take place in May timeline.

Willow will be leaving B-book pretty soon, so yeah, likely she will show up on A&F. Hopefully she will stick there awhile too.

Jeanty's art gets worse, I fear. And once again - I don't think the May issue will be in May timeline. They won't spoil anything major that far in advance. It looks like another little joke - a companion adventure to what I have heard about Spike and his bug-comic. I am sure you will love it though.

The blurb mentions "the world overrun with zompires". I may be wrong, but, so far, it seems that the real trouble with zompires won't start until February.

Of course, comic timelines are very elastic, and there always is a possibility that all season 9 will take place in the span of several weeks.

We'll see.

Apparently, all the three pics - Buffy, Willow and Faith - are fragments of a cover of upcoming season 8 hardcovers. As far as I remember, Chen promised to make season 8 hardcovers, to keep the same style for monthly issues, TPB and HC

So, Willow doesn't get her magic back. Bummer.

Actually, now that I think about it, the old friend angle might be Andrew finishing the Buffy-bot and this suggesting that Buffy take vacation. This will explain the crazy mechanical stuff (mecha-Down anybody?) and the absence of a single antennae or faceted eye on that cover. I recall Andrew breeding the demon Spider as well that was all into mecha-webs. So it might be her work. World overrun with zomps likely is an exaggeration - unless the warehouse full of dead bodies of zopms is what they are nodding at. The freebie giveaway is implied to be a one-shot - and historically one-shots are flashbacks ( re: Riley, Willow).
 
I admit, it took me a while to figure out what "demon Spider" you talk about (the first Spider whom I remembered was Spider from IDW comics). 🙂

But then I looked through issue 23 and - yes, Ragna demon looks as steam-punk as Spike's ship does. Anyway, I doubt that writers would reintroduce an episodic demon from a previous season for a one-shot. Ragna is most likely forgotten by the majority of readers. Its reintroduction demands explanations, demands space.

I wonder how long these Free Comic Book Day stories usually are. One page? Three pages? Ten pages?
 
Me and another fan, we just came up with a theory. She thinks that Spike's ship may have advanced technologies to regenerate a limb.

Now - nobody knows anything about bugs technologies - so Joss has a cart-blanche and can go anywhere. He can make Buffy's new arm magical. She may be able to move objects with it. She may be able to get Wolverin claws.

Or, say, she may be able to heal with her magic hand. This option appeals to me particularly, because it works so well on a metaphorical level.

So, what do you think? Do you think it's possible? Is there a flaw in our idea? What other options do you see?
