Spuffy #7 - General Discussion

Whoa, just realized something. What I just said up there ^^^ gives new meaning to the title "As You Were." I think that might make it worse in some ways...or better if you consider that the writers were openly acknowledging what they were doing, (i.e. bringing Spike back down to "who he was?") Ugh.

Awesome insight you've got going on here lately - truly.

(This ep, though, was just wrong. Spike's not stupid enough to have those in his house, with the danger they brought... IF he was going to be stashing and selling them, he would have totally kept them somewhere that they couldn't possibly hurt him or Buffy (or Dawn, for that matter, since she does occasionally come around).)

I thought that too, that he'd have kept them somewhere else. I mean Buffy comes over all the time . . . *shakes head

I always felt the title "As You Were" related more to Buffy. Who she was was strong, and she knew she was acting "weak and selfish" by using Spike. She couldn't keep doing that anymore. I think her walking back into the light kind of emphasized that at the end of the episode.

From how I always preferred to watch and try to interpret the series, everything was always multi-layered and the visuals were always giving info on the characters and the episode or season arc. I always look for the metaphor and the entire themes that I felt were being explored. It is not sufficient to just say that Buffy was suffering from depression and use that as the explanation for most of her conduct in season 6 and her relationship with Spike. If it were simply a matter of Buffy inflicting self-punishment, she would have actually manipulated the events so that she was the main object of that punishment, but that is not what happens. Up until the total melt-down of their relationship and the horrors of the AR - the character who is the primary victim is not Buffy, but Spike. Now, I am in no way suggesting that this is all Buffy's fault and that she is to blame for the path that they fall into, they both are, but I think if people try to be a objective, the character who is mostly being used is Spike. There is no stronger evidence of this than "As You Were." In my opinion, AYW is the resolution of the "Dead Things" "Older and Faraway" and "As You Were," and all these episode should been viewed as directly connected and about Buffy's dreamscape world manifested in her real world. All these episode speak to the themes of what the characters desire and the barriers that they have created that end in tragedy, but they also are the pivotal transitions that both character need. Spike, gets so totally broken down from his attempted rape of Buffy that he goes to fight and win his soul back; the vital element in the Buffyverse that must be part of a hero role model. Buffy at last starts her real way back from not only her depression, but like Spike also begins her journey as the more mature, strong and independent woman and Slayer we see in Season 7.

I don't understand how anyone could not find Season 6 and the Spuffy relationship anything but compelling and powerful drama. I LOVE SEASON 6.

thank you for that! this really helps dissapate the frustration I feel when watching.
Reddygirl, welcome to The Back Steps! We’re happy to have you here. I look forward to debating the finer points of Spike/Buffy with you. J

I actually read about what was said at SDCC yesterday, and it completely made my day. Seriously. It’s like I always said; Spike and Buffy’s story has only just begun. There’s SO much more there to explore, and the writers know that, and I have no doubt they’re going to have fun playing with it. And we’ll have fun reading it. *excited*

Speaking of S9, what are your thoughts on Andrew Chambliss as the head writer? I know he’s written for Dollhouse and The Vampire Diaries and most importantly - he’s a fan. I remember reading (perhaps in a Buffyfest post) that Buffy was a large part of why he decided to become a television writer.

Personally, I think he’s a step up from Scott Allie, who viewed us all at best as demanding and delusional. Andrew, on the other hand, understands us.

Also, when does the first issue come out again? I need to mark my calendar.

Yeah I was about to ask when season 9 comes.
Although I am only on the second volume of season 8...so yeah, I still got some reading to do! I am trying to pace myself, although it is not going well.

In other news, I am about to begin season 4 rewatch! YAY SPIKE TIME!

I just watched Tabula Rasa, and Spuffy kiss at the end. 😀 I love that part. However, I think Buffy was just doing it for pleasure to make her feel better because she seemed kind of down at the end of that episode... But whatever, I still loved it. 🙂

It should be out tomorrow :)
I liked the comic. the end was super cute Spuffywise...

Really?? Ahh I'm so excited! Jane Espenson has never let the Spuffies down. 😀 I have the code now, but the Dark Horse Digital Store is still showing the BPRD digital comic for me...I have to wait until tomorrow. Poop.

Spuffy tidbits in the new Spike comic! (the middle panel on the first page has the inscription B+S ==> Heart, apparently made by Spike)

Spike drawing B+S ==> Heart is priceless. So totally Spike! Bloody awful poet, sentimental fool for love!

Yay! That's awesome! Little heart is hilarious. And I am filled with the urge to give the poor guy a hug.

Dark Horse wouldn't accept my code. /cry.

So it's super awesome that I got to see some of it! Thanks! 😀

lol wow I didn't even notice the B+S thing until MW pointed it out! What a cutie. 😛 It's such a Spike (and Jane Espenson) thing to do! 😀

The comic was HILARIOUS. I laughed so hard at a lot of the things Spike was doing with the bug crew...it's very like Spike. Anyone catch the way the wedding ceremony had all male bugs in it? It might be a stretch, but it could be a small reference to Jane's new upcoming webseries, Husbands. I like the ending too. Especially like how Buffy calls it "home". 😀

NOW I found the B+S heart! I almost cried because I couldn't find it and had no idea what you're talking about! You know what, I'll still cry. Of happiness! This is the cutest thing Spike ever did! AND now it's clear that he's not over her yet.
