Spuffy #7 - General Discussion

Yah... i keep rewatching trying to see how S6 Spuffy included Buffy punishing herself. I just don't see it. I see her as very attracted to him but mostly feeling bad due to constantly feeling the need to deny it...kinda like what he says to her in Normal Again. Maybe it's the actors more than how it was written, but there's so much intensity there that I don't see it as just a physical thing on her part (but maybe I'm projecting?) I've been rewatching Dead Things specifically, and analyzing it. Rewatching it in order again, looking back, kinda makes me even more confused (& the rest of S6)...

And...i did read that new fanfic already, but i just makes me more anxious waiting for the S9 ...(i like the fanfics set post BtVS and Angel)

THIS, though, is why I initially found the boards here...to find others who share my love for Spuffy and make me feel less crazy about it🙂

Yes! I don't think she is punnishing herself...I think she's really wrestling with her feelings which are definitely those of attraction.

First, I'll say I think Buffy's punishing herself in season 6 is greatly exaggerated by fans. Second, I do see it... especially in Dead Things. Third, I think it's largely misunderstood and does contradict itself a bit, but honestly, pretty much everything involving depression is like that.

Honestly, I think the biggest way she punishes herself is not by sleeping with Spike... It's not Spike... it's the fact he's a soulless being. It's getting involved in an intimate way with someone and something she's supposed to hate. It's enjoying it... and then feeling bad about it. It's like how in Wrecked when she goes to leave at the beginning, there's that super hot bit where he puts his arms around her neck and locks his hands into fists and says "I may be dirt, but you're the one who likes to roll in it." It's the fact that she likes to roll in the dirt... That she does... and that she likes it. She punishes herself for that. She punishes herself for coping if that makes sense. In Dead Things, Buffy punishes herself by letting go of her morals... And then we see what she thinks of herself. When she beats the crap out of Spike, the things she says to him... That's what she thinks about herself. That's how she's been punishing herself... because that's what she thinks about herself.

Punishing oneself does not have to be keeping something from yourself or even doing something you don't want to do... it could just be thinking bad about yourself. In Buffy's case, I think it's all three. She keeps herself from getting better (towards the end of their relationship near As You Were), she sleeps with Spike, and she thinks she's a terrible person.

I also think she has feelings for Spike, and I think she punishes herself for having these feelings. In the same ways as listed above.

I hope this all makes sense... I feel like it's super jumbled, but I honestly can't straighten it out right now... WAY too tired.

Thank you...
All I see is self inflicted/self imposed shame...about their relationship overall (the things they do) and maybe her feelings for him? Even though he's soulless, he still loves her and tries to do so much for her and lets her just take everything out on him. Is part of it that they have this thing, and eventhough he's soulless, she's the one who is more abusive and cruel? I don't know... but i love that it's so complicated.

Yes, I think that is part of it... kind of like "I'm worse than the soulless creature. How?"

I think part of why I'm so fascinated with Spuffy is because we don't see certain things, and it's left up to the viewer's imagination. The sexual relationship between Buffy and Spike in s6 in one such example. We only really hear about how violent it is, but don't actually see it. We only see Spike's crypt messy, or shots of them having sex. Other things are kind of implied, like the hand-cuffs for instance. It's really not until s7, in "Conversations with Dead People," that Buffy does admit how she wanted to be punished when she came back from the dead. She wanted it to hurt, and she let Spike take over at a certain point.

Yes! I totally agree. That is a reason why I love Spuffy as well. With Angel, their relationship was all on the screen. There wasn't anything left up to the imagination. There is with Spike. We don't see everything. We only see clues, glimpses into their relationship.

Oh, and slightly off topic, what are y'alls fav Spuffy fanfics? I would LOVE to read them 🙂

Edit: NVM I just found a Spuffy fanfic thread 😉

So, I just wanted to say that I've gone through some personal stuff recently, mainly with relationships. And Spuffy has helped me get through it in ways I didn't think could be possible. They've taught and inspired me so much. 🙂

Plus, it's now guaranteed that I'll never again be a Bangel shipper, lol! 😀

Wow, obviously I need to re-watch Chosen.

That's crazy that those are the last two things she says. "I love you" and "Spike."

It was interesting what she had to say about Spike lacking confidence since he got his soul. I never thought of it that way before.

1. What, in your opinion, would be the worst thing Joss could do to the Spike/Buffy relationship in season 9?

The worst for me would be to place Spike in a position where he did something totally rash that ended up working against all that he has struggled for since he got his soul. I would hate for a treatment where the relationship between Buffy and Spike were put into real jeopardy. The worst thing that Joss Whedon and Dark Horse could do is start a round of "Spuffy" fan service of any kind and then pull it all apart. As a Spike fan and Spuffy fan of many years "“ I am more than ready to have Spike get a final "sorry I can't love you" - both these characters and the Spuffy and Spike fans, IMO, deserve closure from all the drama.

2. Will you hold it against Buffy if it is revealed she can't stop loving Angel, even after the "Twilight" fiasco and Giles' death?

Buffy and the entire Buffyverse would be destroyed for me I could never have this scenario and remain a fan. Everything in the story of Angel as Twilight, the extreme violence against Buffy and women and the death and destruction connected to Angel is something that I will not forget. He deserves a chance to try and come back from the horrors of BS8, but for Buffy to get back with him, from my personal POV it sends such a lousy statement about the use of violence. Of course, we all have our own personal life experiences that act as filter on this question, my filter is seeing women being used as victims of violence and so I am not so forgiving as others.

3. What was the first scene that sold you on Spike's love for Buffy? Buffy's love for Spike? The Spike/Buffy 'ship in general?

The "Intervention" episode was what solidified the capacity for Love that Spike had for Buffy "“ especially their last scene where all is resolved with her statement that what he did for them was real. The entire episode was all about fantasy and not seeing the truth but at the end, the truth of his love was revealed.

4. Of all the Spuffy-related (whether they be between Buffy and Spike or any other characters) conversations that never were shown, which would you most want to see?

I also would have loved to have had a scene between Buffy and Dawn talking honestly about Buffy going off to turn herself in and abandoning Dawn. That was such a powerful scene and something that I think should have been referenced again "“ especially for Dawn. Buffy was given the miracle quick fix get into Slayer mode but Dawn was left thinking that Buffy was just going to leave her behind.

5. Seven sexiest Spuffy moments?

1. The look Buffy and Spike share just before his starts kissing him the abandoned building.
2. Kissing scene in TR
3. Hands seeking each other through the crypt wall
4. Balcony scene
5. Spike's dream sequence in "Out of My Mind."
6. The dreamscapes sex scenes in "Dead Things"
7. Not sexy but I loved when she goes to examine his woud in "Potentials."

It's a horrible wet, rainy day here today, so I've spent the day re-reading KnifeEdge's West of the Moon, East of the Sun (which, if you haven't read it yet, you really, really should.)

Anyway, I just had to come over here and quote part of the fic because, well... just because. 😀 You're all Spuffy fans, you'll know why...

"Spike is..." I pause, trying to think how to describe him. "Spike is Spike."

"And you love him?"

"I do," I tell her. "I really, really do."

"More than Angel?" she asks.

The bedroom door suddenly seems interested in our conversation. Spike and I are going to have to have a talk about eavesdropping. Not that it's likely to make much of a difference.

"I'm... I'm not sure that you can love someone more," I say. "Do you love Tara more than you loved Oz?"

Willow thinks about it for a minute. "No," she says. "Just... differently."

"If he came back again?" I ask.

"I'd still be with Tara," she says. She gets it, I think.

New Question Time...

1. - Looking foward to season 9...
What do you think is the likelihood of getting...
...an explanation?
...a kiss?
...an admission?
...some hope for the future?

2. Is there any time during the entire relationship when you think Buffy loved Spike more than he loved her?

3. Did you ship Spike/Drusilla, Spike/Harmony, Xander/Buffy, Angel/Buffy or Riley/Buffy before you got into Spike/Buffy, or was Spike/Buffy your first 'ship involving those characters?

4. What sort of scene do you wish they would have played out between Buffy and Spike?

5. When the walls fell down around Buffy and Spike the first time they had sex in Smashed did you see it as a metaphorical destruction of things to come or breaking down the walls between them/a new beginning?

6. **Extra credit query** Does anyone understand how to get hold of the Spike one shot written by Jane Espenson that is apparently due out next month. Will it appear on Dark Horse Presents for free or will it be available for purchase in the Dark Horse digital store?

I think there may be some sort of explanation. That's pretty likely. It's not like Spike to not bring things up. "Nobody said it was except me, right now, to your face."
I can hope for a kiss. That would be AWESOME.
I'm not sure about the last two. But I really hope for those as well. Hope is good.

2. Is there any time during the entire relationship when you think Buffy loved Spike more than he loved her?

Actually, I don't think so. I think they may have been approaching equal towards the end of season 7 though.

3. Did you ship Spike/Drusilla, Spike/Harmony, Xander/Buffy, Angel/Buffy or Riley/Buffy before you got into Spike/Buffy, or was Spike/Buffy your first 'ship involving those characters?

I still really like Spike/Dru. And when I was a teenager I was the biggest Bangel ever. Shh! Don't tell anyone!

4. What sort of scene do you wish they would have played out between Buffy and Spike?

Heh. One where her Cinemax thoughts had actually happened. 😉

5. When the walls fell down around Buffy and Spike the first time they had sex in Smashed did you see it as a metaphorical destruction of things to come or breaking down the walls between them/a new beginning?

I kind of watched it all backwards so I saw it as a bit destructive since I knew pretty much everything that was to come.

6. **Extra credit query** Does anyone understand how to get hold of the Spike one shot written by Jane Espenson that is apparently due out next month. Will it appear on Dark Horse Presents for free or will it be available for purchase in the Dark Horse digital store?

I didn't even hear about this. I want!

There's nothing wrong with Spuffy!Insanity. 😛

I'm going to rec this in the fics thread as well, but as you're talking about S9 and the preview panel, here's a link to a great fic that was posted yesterday, based on the preview page showing Buffy and Spike at a party. Buffy's adorable in it.

Man, that story was good. Thanks for linking, Amy!

1. - Looking foward to season 9...
What do you think is the likelihood of getting...
...an explanation?
...a kiss?
...an admission?
...some hope for the future?

Yes to all. I have faith in S/B and their future together. I could definitely see a Drunk!Buffy making a move on Spike. Definitely.

2. Is there any time during the entire relationship when you think Buffy loved Spike more than he loved her?

Whoa. Good question.

My answer is no. Spike never for a second doubted his love for Buffy. It was all-consuming (it burned and consumed him - remember?) Buffy, on the other hand, always tried to convince herself her love for him wasn't "real" or that it was "wrong." She was in serious denial. So no, I do not think that Buffy ever loved Spike more than he loved her. Spike DIED for her. There is no love stronger than that. Do I think Buffy has the capacity to love him as much as he loves her? Definitely. All she needs to do is give in and let herself love him.

3. Did you ship Spike/Drusilla, Spike/Harmony, Xander/Buffy, Angel/Buffy or Riley/Buffy before you got into Spike/Buffy, or was Spike/Buffy your first 'ship involving those characters?

AS embarassing as this is to admit, I actually liked R/B. I didn't 'ship them - but I didn't dislike them initally. I always though D/S was interesting, but I always wanted Spike with Buffy.

4. What sort of scene do you wish they would have played out between Buffy and Spike?

God, so many possibilties.

I would have liked to see that last night in Chosen and what actually happened. Screw ambiguity! I want S/B smoochies!

5. When the walls fell down around Buffy and Spike the first time they had sex in Smashed did you see it as a metaphorical destruction of things to come or breaking down the walls between them/a new beginning?

I saw it as an analogy of how bad it had gotten with them. Also, as an apt metaphor for the passion between them.

6. **Extra credit query** Does anyone understand how to get hold of the Spike one shot written by Jane Espenson that is apparently due out next month. Will it appear on Dark Horse Presents for free or will it be available for purchase in the Dark Horse digital store?

I have been doing yet another watch of Season 6 and particularly the triad of "Dead Things" "Older And Faraway" and "As You Were" which I see as all directly connected. This relationship and their journey story is so multi-layered and powerful, so filled with destructive violence and also so much love. Trying to see the Buffy-Spike Season 6 as only Buffy being Mega Depresso Girl is, IMO, simply not a useful perspective for trying to understand all that is being presented.

For instance the infamous brutal alley attack - that scene brings in the morality of Buffy taking the full responsibility for what she thinks is killing Katrina. But just as important is the theme of her responsibility to Dawn as her caretaker, Buffy's potentially just trying to use Katrina as an means to an end of escaping from all the emotional trauma she has experienced since her return. We also have the theme of Spike, as her object of sublimation, using him as an object for all her anger and confusion of how to take hold of her life again. Plus Spike, is also, IMO, a reflection of all her past experience with Angel/Angelus. Riley is her let's move on from Angel/Angelus and Spike is the slap-in-the-face throw back for all her good intentions and normal boy friend desires.

Spike in the alley scene is also another big complex theme for the character. On the one hand he is trying to protect Buffy but is totally wrong from the moral and ethical perspective. In the same scene we also have Spike allowing himself as Buffy's object of sublimation. The total scene encompasses so much more than trying to interpreted it as the more narrow "Buffy is depressed" and is engaged in self-punishment with Spike in Season 6. If we wanted to bring in even more layers, there is the mythic formulas of the work from Joseph Campbell and other scholars on symbolism and elements of the mythic forms and stories. Spike could be said to be going through his own trial to be the worthy consort of the heroine Buffy - he, by accepting her brutal attack, seeing Buffy in all her goodness and darkness and accepting everything that she is proves himself as the worthy mate/consort.

There is nothing about their relationship that, IMO, can be seen from a limited surface layer and give the viewer a full understanding of Buffy and Spike and their relationship.

I think there will be some attention to why Spike did not contact her post Sunnydale – the story needs it and we have the Willow crossover that makes it even more of something that needs resolution. As far as Good Things Spuffy, not so sure that Joss Whedon or Dark Horse want to go there anytime soon.

2. Is there any time during the entire relationship when you think Buffy loved Spike more than he loved her?
Sadly,No. Buffy never loved Spike on the same level that he loved her.

I was never interested in any romance in the series before Spike falls in love with Buffy. Willow and Tara are the other romance that I had a particular interest in -

4. What sort of scene do you wish they would have played out between Buffy and Spike?
I would have liked a transition scene post alley attack and the arrival of Spike and Clem at the birthday party. I would have like even Spike and Clem talking about what happened in that alley – this would have been a great counterpart to Buffy and Tara’s scene.

5. When the walls fell down around Buffy and Spike the first time they had sex in Smashed did you see it as a metaphorical destruction of things to come or breaking down the walls between them/a new beginning?
I wanted to see it as a metaphor for breaking down the walls between them – but it was always planned as the fore shadow of all the misery that was to come. Eventually, the metaphor that I wanted does come to fruition in their transformation journey. Both characters are broken down and damaged and eventually recreate and heal themselves; Spike in Africa and Buffy being able to start her healing from her Angel/Angelus history and resurrection/depression. This is of course, my personal POV, other people will see things differently.

Love this post. Their relationship is intensely complex and that's what draws us all to it. There are so many different ways that it can be interpreted. I loved everything you had to say about the alley scene. Particularly about Spike proving himself as a worthy consort for Buffy.

I actually find these episodes and the alley scene in particular, very hard to watch. There is so much emotion, passion and pain put into these events. You can tell that each of these characters is having a lot of emotions and thoughts, even if they aren't appropriately expressing them.

It makes these supernatural characters so extremely naked . . . and human.

The things that happen in this season, the things that we are shown, are usually things that people don't usually like to talk about.

Like that there can be darkness in our heroes. And in fact, that there very often is.

Anyway, I've gotten tangenty again. I tend to do that. Anyway! Awesome post! 😀
