I love fanfiction. I'm always hunting for good fics to read, so I thought we should have a Spuffy fic recs thread.

Recommend fics you've read and liked here - but of course abiding by the site's rules (so only the lower-rated stuff).

I'll start by recc'ing the fantastic author EnigmaticBlue. She has a truly impressive body of work, all kinds of Spuffy stories, short, long, epic. And her fics never go above a PG-13 rating (that I'm aware of) - proving that a story doesn't have to be full of smut to be good (a view I come across far too often in fandom).

My favourite fics by EnigmaticBlue:

Cast Me Not Away 'Verse
A long series exploring the ramifications of love, loss, and belonging. Spike leaves after "Dead Things," wanting nothing more than to get Buffy out of his head. Wesley's still an independent contractor after the events of "Loyalty." And Buffy's still living in the land of denial.

When she says a long series... she means it. This is a fantastic 'verse with lots of surprises along the way. It explores a friendship not often seen in fic - Wesley and Spike - and has an OC that I actually believe in. Really love this one. 😀

The "Alive" Series
What if the Initiative changed Spike into a human, rather than giving him a chip? Let's just say the transition isn't all that easy on him, or anyone else for that matter. Will he finally discover the great advantage of being alive?

Really interesting premise and very well-executed. Takes canon events and gives them the twist of human!Spike.

So... any recs, anyone?

Maybe we should have a Spuffy meta rec thread. And Emmie is awesome!
I second the rec for Cass's fics.

Unusual to find an all-human fic with a lower rating, but this one by Mabel Marsters is good:

Break Even
When you lose the love of your life, can you ever really move on? Can a broken heart be mended? Spike isn't sure that he'll ever stop loving Buffy even though she doesn't want him. Spiralling ever deeper into depression, will he be able to find a way back to happiness?

And one of my favourite feel-good-always-put-a-smile-on-your-face fics:

A Day Out by kantayra
Buffy decides to spend a cloudy day at the mall, only to discover that a certain annoying, hyperactive, peroxide vampire had the same idea. Much wackiness ensues.

Both rated PG-13.
 
If you want something heart-wrenching, something that will make you cry (I defy you not to!), this is the fic you need to read. I've read it three or four times and it gets me every time. This woman knows how to write angst.

Stay by Anaross - PG-13
Please stay, Please stay.
Two words I never thought I'd learn to say.

And I highly recommend Anaross's other fics, in particular:

Long Day's Journey by Anaross - PG-13
Spike's return, seen through the eyes of Angel and his friends. Oh. And he's not allowed to see Buffy. Post Chosen. Spike/Buffy pairing.

What can I say about this fic? It's long, it's plotty and it's just fantastic. Anaross writes every chapter from a different character's point of view and nails it every time. It's perhaps the slowest-burning Spuffy fic I've read, but the anticipation makes it sweeter. A Spike fic where we never see anything from Spike's direct perspective, and it actually works? Love, love, love this fic. If 'Desert Island Fics' existed, this would be number one on my list. Favourite moments: Spike starts up a W&H rock band with Wes and Gunn and Lorne and Clem. 😀 He manages to get Angel to be the manager (some hilarious moments there!); there's a Spike-Connor friendship subplot that's just fantastic; a Harmony ship you never saw coming and when it finally gets to the Spuffy... *happy sigh* - no one does Spuffy like Anaross.

Have I talked anyone into reading it? I hope so! I think I'm gonna have to re-read it myself, now. 😀

We're so lucky to have so many wonderful authors and fics in the Spuffy fandom.

How about some far-in-the-future, everything's-changed fics? And one's a Dollhouse crossover, too. Warning: both are WIPs!

In "Get it Done" Buffy entered a portal to get information. Now, when she leaves it, she finds everything has changed; including her friends, her family and her world.

I love this fic. The portal in Get it Done sends Buffy thirty years into the future, and upon arrival she slays a vampire. But the world has changed and vamps now have equal rights to humans, making it a crime of murder to slay one. Buffy gets arrested and guess who turns up to prosecute her... 😉 This fic actually made me cry. :blush: It was updated again recently after a hiatus of about a year, and I'm hoping the author will update again soon because I need to know what happens!

Epitaph Again by ghostofsnickerdoodle - 15
One hundred years after Chosen, Buffy lives in a world destroyed by the Dollhouse's technology, looking for something she can't let herself remember. Her life changes when she gets a box in the mail (never mind that mail no longer exists) containing a certain incorporeal someone.

This is extremely well-written and a fascinating concept. Buffy has somehow survived into the future, a world where the Dollhouse didn't stop the signal and everyone's struggling to survive. Spike arrives in ghosty-form and together with some half-demon 'splices' they have to try and stop the mind-wiping/imprinting signal. Add in a second Buffy imprinted into another body... A really excellent fic which I hope will be updated soon!

I'm beginning to think I'm the only fic addict here... 😀

Anyway, this isn't a Spuffy fic, it's a genfic. But it features Spike and Buffy(bot) and it's awesome so I just had to rec it.

The Buffybot Adventures by Visitor - PG/PG-13
I'm writing this series of Buffybot oriented Fanfics with the mindset of this being a spin-off of sorts from BTVS...or something like that. Season One spans between the Buffy episodes "The Gift" and "Bargaining", during the period of time I lovingly refer to as the 'Summer of Buffybot'.

I just found this series today and I'm already in love with it. I adore the Buffybot as a character and I haven't really read much fic about her - and here's a whole series? *glee*

Anyway, I'm not even halfway through the first 'season' but there's already so much to love. Excellent characterisation of the Buffybot as she starts becoming slightly more self-aware, intriguing plotlines for each 'episode' - time travel, visits to alternate dimensions, comic-cons, lots of quippy fun. Plus a hilarious moment with Spike up a tree. 😀

Highly recommend this.

(The forum set-up's a bit bizarre for reading fic but the author has divided it all up helpfully, with an episode guide for the 'seasons'.)

Set post-Damage in AtS S5, this is one of those many reunion fics. But it's very well written and hits all the right emotions. Not finished yet but I think the final chapter will go up soon.

A Romantic Notion by Angearia - PG

Still Famous - PG-13 - 5,455 words
Sequel to Famous on the Internet. When Spike discovers his new-found fame, he wants nothing more than to find Andrew and knock some sense into him. Meanwhile, Buffy is determined to go to LA to confront Spike over his return from the dead. With Spike on his way to London, and Buffy headed for the States, will things ever get resolved?

Seems like everyone writes a reunion fic and this is my version.

I Have Waited for You - PG-13 - 6,306 words
As a series of mysterious disappearances sweep Sunnydale, Buffy meets William and they fall in love. When a bleach-blond, leather-clad vampire with a familiar face arrives in town, their relationship is tested, especially when it seems that William knows more than he's letting on about those going missing. Set in an AU Sunnydale.

Trying my hand at an AU world. This was my favourite to write.

Pieces of Me - PG-13 - 15,122 words
When Ned McNabb, professional Imaginary Friend since 1907, arrives in Sunnydale and offers Buffy his life-altering services, what will she do? And how will Spike take the news that Buffy's got another demon following her around? Set in early season six.

My first attempt at a Spuffy multichapter fic. Also the very first fic I ever completed. All my fic in my previous fandom was abandoned.

The Game - PG-13 - WIP
Two competitors. Two prizes. One winner. When Spike and Buffy are transported to an alternate dimension and forced to compete against each other in a race of logic, wit and strength, who will succeed? As the finish line draws closer, will they find themselves getting closer, too? Set between seasons four and five.

My second attempt at a multichapter and one that I really need to update soon!

Once More Into the Rift - PG-13 - 2,791 words
Whilst drowning his sorrows in an L.A. bar, Spike meets a blonde stranger who needs his help saving the world. She ends up teaching him a little something about his love for Buffy. BtVS/Doctor Who crossover, post-Destiny and Doomsday.

I keep meaning to read Sandara's fics. There's an epically long one she's posting at TSR that sounds interesting, but I haven't got around to it yet.

I'm gonna rec one of the fics posted at seasonal_spuffy the other day. Actually, all the fics posted (that I've read so far, I'm very behind 🙁) are really good - but this one was the one that made the most impact.

This Be the Verse by ghostyouknow27 - R (no sexual situations)
Begins at the start of Season 7, but immediately goes AU. Buffy gets pregnant with Spike's baby, and it fixes everything that's wrong in their relationship.

This fic has a very unique take on the babyfic trope and it's seriously creepy.

Spike and Dawn manage to persuade Buffy that what she really needs is some time off, and what better than a night of roller coasters, cotton candy and all the fun of the local fair. She should have known that nothing is ever that simple in Sunnydale. Set in early season six. (5,200 words)
