I absolutely love that its AU, it doesn't limit future story-telling and allows the possibility of readdressing some of the 'lamer' issues and giving them a great spin.
Khan is a great movie, as is First Contact (probably both still pip as the best) but this was definitely one of the best Trek films to date.
Nero - Really, why is it that we must now make Romulans into bad-ass motorcycle gang wannabes? Seriously. They're supposed to be sly and cunning... But I still love Eric Bana.
Well he was, in fairness, the last of his kind - its not impossible to believe that in the future he's a renegade Romulan who seeks vengeance and thats how his crew dresses. I mean I didn't realise he was a Romulan until later in the story, but who cares this movie was NEVER about the villain, this was about the crew coming together and I really liked that.
Kirk - I know Kirk is a dick, but he's also human, too. I felt Chris Pine didn't get past the dick part. 😛
I disagree entirely. Kirk is not a dick and Chris Pine did a fantastic ob of updating him. I loved all his scenes be it the comedy (the hands!!!) or the drama (provoking Spock) and th action (I thought the fight on the weapon on Vulcan was awesome!).
Spock - Just all 'round pretty damn good. Of course, he had Nimoy by his side, but still.
Can't really argue with this - Spock was phenomenal.
Uhura - Mackin' on Spock the entire movie = wtf, why?
Because as th only female character it was either Spock or Kirk and to be frightfully honest, I far prefer the idea of Spock.
I actually liked the relationship of these two.
Bones - He was like Bones on crack. He needed to relax a little and not be trying to quote DeForest Kelley every line. But not bad.
So, you have issue with them being different or the same?
He was PERFECT in my opinion. His character had some of the best lines and it was awesome that he was the most recognisible character from the old show. I loved his 'divorce' line at the beginning...in fact his entire entrance to the movie is great.
Ohh and just to be clear, he wasn't quoting DeForest Kelley, he was being Bones which was based on the character portrayed by DeForest Kelley.
Sulu - What's with the techno-sword? But still, not too bad. We didn't get to see much of him, though.
Swiss Pocket Katana was effen AWESOME - Sulu was brilliant.
Yes a different character to the one we know, but I didn't mind that.
Chekov - There wasn't much more than the accent, and the accent itself was kinda over-done.
Absolutely overdone and do you know what - I loved every moment of him on screen. I would not have changed a bit about his character in this movie.
Scotty - Dude. Scotty is smart, awesome, and so full of depth in the show and movies. Why do we get someone relegated to comic relief? He had his moments, but c'mon... the whole bit with the water tube things was so stupid. It's like making Gimli into comic relief.
You get that this movie was an origins right, that we didn't have enough time to truly work out each character. Scotty was on screen for a total of what, 10 minutes?
I think your assessment of his character is actually a little unfair and the water tube thing, well I loved that - its great to see an untested science have some early issues.
Plus, Simon Pegg is one of the funniest men to com out of England for years - had he not been 'funny' people would have complained about that.
I am perfectly happy with Peggs Scotty as is - that doesn't mean I don't wanna see progression of his character in the next movie, just that for his debut, awesome.
Another thing Seraphim pointed out to me... the plotline is more or less ripped off from A New Hope. Farmboy becomes a man, under the guidance of Old Ben (Pike) and told to become a Jedi/Starfleet Captain like his father before him. Planet gets destroyed, and it even culminates in Farmboy-Now-Hero getting a medal and receiving applause by all his military peers.
And? This movie is a 'new hope' for Star Trek

But yeah, its kinda similar and in fairness as I was walking out of the cinema I did turn to my friends and say, as we passed a Spock/Kirk poster - do you think in the next film they'll say 'Kirk, I am your father?'

You could not be more wrong.
This was a movie aimed at both fans and non fans and as an absolute Trek fan, I can tell you it did everything I needed it to do.
I only have two complaints about it:
1.) It was almost TOO fast-paced. It seemed like they didn't take enough time to stop for a second and better establish the plot, although it didn't really hurt it too much in the end. Plus, I really had to pee the whole time and I wouldn't let myself get up because I knew I'd come back and be completely lost, so I was kind of like, "Okay, can we take a quick break? No? Okay, fine."
2.) This is pretty much related to my first complaint, but it felt too short. I know it was a little over two hours long, but it completely flew by.
The movie was one big adrenaline rush and all the better for it.
It started as it meant to go on, which was at Warp 9!
There was no real need to establish a plot, it was about getting the characters together, thats all. The plot was actually superfluous. Its the next film when that has to change.
Watch it again with an empty bladder!
Ohh and yeah, a movie that is over two hours long but you don't feel it - I quite like that, unlike films that are like an hour and a half long that feel like a day!
